Abstract

The rotary spiral compressor has a stationary spiral element with a stationary spiral flange and an orbiting spiral element with an orbiting spiral flange. An orbital drive mechanism drives the orbiting spiral element in an orbit around the stationary spiral element, and a non-rotating bearing device keeps the orbiting spiral element substantially non-rotating in relation to the stationary spiral element. The stationary and orbiting spiral flanges are recessed and housed together, to form at least one spiral compression pocket between them. The end seal assembly forms a substantially airtight seal between at least one of the stationary and orbiting spiral flanges and the base of the other spiral element. The end seal assembly includes an inwardly extending cavity formed on an end surface of at least one of the stationary and orbiting spiral flanges, a compressible element disposed within and along the cavity, and an end seal , which overlaps the compressible element. Preferably, the end sealing element extends beyond the end surface, when the compressible element is in an uncompressed state, the end sealing element including at least one of a non-metallic surface, a fluorosint material and a product PTFE base, and the compressible element including at least one of an elastomeric material, a silicone rubber material and a high temperature resistant O-ring material.
