A invenção proporciona um catalisador para produção de <244>-olefinas e um método de uso do catalisador para produção de <244>-olefinas, cujas vantagens são que o catalisador exibe alta atividade de oligomerização de etileno e a quantidade dos produtos secundários tais como componentes pesados e componentes cerosos que poderão ser produzidos no método é reduzida. In one aspect, the catalyst is prepared by contacting (a) any of clay, clay minerals and layered ion exchange compounds with (b) a transition metal complex whose central metal is a transition metal of Groups 8 to 10 of the Periodic Table, for a period of at least 10 minutes, and the catalyst is used for ethylene oligomerization to produce <244> -olefins. In another aspect, the catalyst is prepared by contacting (a ') any of clay, clay minerals or layered ion exchange compounds that have been processed with an alkylation, with (b) a transition metal complex whose central metal is a metal of transition from Groups 8 to 10 of the Periodic Table, where the component (a ') is such that its suspension formed by adding an inert medium to it releases a maximum of 1 mmol per gram of the component (a'), of the agent alkylation medium, and the catalyst is used for ethylene oligomerization to produce β-olefins.
