Abstract

The concentrate is used in the manufacture of cosmetics, pharmaceutical preparations and foodstuffs. It offers a combination of carotenoides, tocopherols and phytosterols. By this method the basic plant material; nettle, sumac, stellaria and pine or their mixtures undergo a triple distillation with methanol. The combined fractions are vacuum-evaporated, the total extract dissolved in propylene glycol and the resulting solution triple-extracted with petroleum ether. The combined petroleum ether extracts are vacuum evaporated. The resulting fat-soluble residue is treated with alcoholic potassium hydroxide solution and the mixture is once again subjected to a triple extraction with petroleum ether. The combined extracts are washed with distilled water to neutral reaction and the organic solvent separated by vacuum distillation.
