<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

registered by the company known as: MERLIN-GERIN having for object: Mixed differential and short-circuit trip device equipped with an intensity transformer with common zero sequence toroid Qualification proposed: PATENT OF INVENTION
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The invention relates to a mixed tripping device for an AC cut-off device, in particular a circuit breaker or a two-pole or four-pole differential circuit breaker, sensitive to both at an earth fault current and at an overload or short-circuit current, and comprising:
- a current transformer with differential transformer of the zero sequence type with a magnetic core in the form of a toroid crossed by the active conductors of the alternating network, - a secondary winding wound on the torus and in electrical connection with a control coil of a relay tripping, - a mechanism cooperating with the tripping relay to cause the automatic opening of the contacts of the breaking device in the event of a differential tripping or overload threshold being exceeded.
This type of device does not have additional thermal magnetic trip devices used for the detection of an overload or a short circuit. This detection results from the imbalance of the differential transformer due to the action of the leakage flux generated by the passage of current in the primary conductors. For large intensities, the leakage flow gives rise to an output signal in the secondary winding capable of triggering the relay. The influence of this leakage flow is generally favored by: - the decentering of the active conductors crossing the toroid , the irregular distribution of the secondary winding on the periphery of the toroid, - and the absence of a metal shield between the secondary winding and the active conductors forming the primary coils.
These known devices cause an imbalance
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of the differential transformer which can cause the relay to trip when a short-circuit current appears, but are unable to precisely set the operating threshold for short-circuit.
German patent NO 568.147 discloses a mixed trigger of the kind mentioned, using an asymmetrical intensity transformer comprising primary windings of different constructions (number of turns or diameters).
The preponderant influence of one of the primary windings ensures the modification of the balance of the differential transformer in the presence of a significant short-circuit current. On the other hand, the structure of such a trip device affects the sensitivity of the differential protection which is clearly diminished.
To remedy this drawback, German patent application NO.1,128,534 proposes making use of a symmetrical intensity transformer in which the leakage flux acts directly on the trip relay, for example of the polarized type, when the overload corresponds to 10 In, in being the nominal current flowing through the switch. Such a switch nevertheless requires the presence of a current flow conductor in the immediate vicinity of the trip relay.
The object of the invention is to remedy these drawbacks and to allow the production of a reliable mixed trip device associated with a differential switch or circuit breaker having differential trip thresholds and on short-circuit of predetermined values.
The mixed tripping device according to the invention is characterized in that inside the toroid of the differential transformer is arranged a shunt made of magnetic material, interposed between the active conductors and constituting a leakage circuit whose magnetic reluctance
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
determines the tripping threshold on short circuit. The shunt is separated from the torus by at least one air gap and has an asymmetrical structure in the form of V, L, X or Y. As a result, the presence of the shunt inside the torus without disturbing the detection of currents earth leakage detection of short-circuit currents using the same trip relay. The tripping threshold on short circuit mainly depends on the magnetic reluctance of the shunt leakage circuit.
The shunt is fixed relative to the torus by being positioned by ribs integral with the insulating housing housing the torus. The position of the shunt inside the toroid can be adjustable to adjust the short-circuit trip threshold to a predetermined value.
Other advantages and characteristics will emerge more clearly from the description which follows of an embodiment of the invention, given by way of nonlimiting example and represented in the appended drawing, in which: FIG. 1 shows the electrical diagram of the differential differential and short-circuit tripping device equipped with the current transformer according to the invention; Figure 2 is an exploded view, in axial section of an embodiment of the differential transformer with zero sequence toroid, the shunt being mounted on the lower half-shell of the insulating housing for housing the toroid; Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view of the differential transformer, after removal of the active conductors; Figure 4 shows a plan view of the differential transformer after insertion of the active conductors.
In FIG. 1, a polarized relay 10 of a

tripping device associated with the mechanism 12 for actuating a breaking device 13, in particular a circuit breaker or a switch electrically connected in a single-phase alternating network with phase 14 and neutral conductors 16. The tripping relay 10 comprises a paddle 18 pivoting with opening spring 20, and a fixed magnetic circuit 22 polarized by a permanent magnet 24. A trip coil 26 wound on one of the legs of the magnetic circuit 22, is connected by connecting conductors 28.30 to l secondary winding 32 of a differential transformer 34.
The core of the latter is formed by a torus 36 crossed by the active conductors 14, 16 of the network to be monitored, the secondary winding 32 being wound on the torus 36 and delivering in the presence of an insulation fault a trip order. to the coil 26 for controlling the relay 10. The torus 36 is une ferrite or is produced by winding in several layers a ferromagnetic strip, in particular of iron-nickel or iron-silicon.
The operation of such a residual differential device is conventional, and it suffices to recall that the differential transformer 34 supplies a control signal to the relay 10 when the sum of the currents flowing in the active conductors 14, 16 is different from zero, in particular at following an earth leakage current. If the differential trip threshold is exceeded, the relay 10 gives the order to open the mechanism 12 of the associated breaking device 13. The tripping order of relay 10 can be instantaneous or can intervene after an intentional delay of adjustable duration.
According to the invention, a shunt 38 made of magnetic material, in particular soft iron, silicon iron or nickel iron, is arranged inside the toroid 36 of the differential transformer 34 to cause the triggering of the relay 10 at the appearance a balanced short-circuit current in one of the active conductors. The shunt 38 is separated from the internal cylindrical wall of the torus 36 by a pair of ent-
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
trefers e .., e-, and has an asymmetrical structure, which divides the interior of the torus 36 into two adjacent elementary zones for housing the active conductors 14, 16. The secondary winding 32 is placed inside the dial formed by the magnetic screen 38 to be embraced by the leakage flow.
The section of the shunt 38, the magnetic permeability of the material used, and the length of the two air gaps e .., e determine the value of the reluctance of the leakage circuit which adjusts the tripping threshold on short circuit. The voltage delivered to the terminals of the secondary winding 32 of the differential transformer 34 is proportional to the leakage flow derived in the shunt 38, the latter having any shape, in particular in V (fig. 1), in L (fig. 3) or in X or Y.
The presence of the shunt 38 inside the toroid 36 makes it possible to detect both a ground leakage current and a short-circuit current by using the same trip relay 10. The differential trip threshold is fixed by the setting of relay 10, which can be of the polarized type while the tripping threshold on short-circuit depends mainly on the reluctance and the arrangement of the shunt 38. Automatic triggering of the residual differential device, from a predetermined level of short-circuit current limits the thermal stress borne by the switching device and avoids the risk of contact soldering.
With reference to FIGS. 2 to 4, the torus 36 on which the secondary winding 32 of the differential transformer 34 is wound, is housed in the annular space 40 delimited by the assembly of two half-shells 42,44 made of insulating material forming a tubular shoemaker. The internal wall 46 of separation of the active conductors 14, 16 and of the torus 36 of each half-shell 42, 44 of the shoemaker is equipped with a pair of ribs 48 extending in the axial direction of the torus 36 to ensure the positioning of the shunt 38 inside the torus 36. The shunt 38 is thus immobilized in translation by the two half-shells 42, 44 in the assembled position, and in rotation by the ribs 48. The shunt
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
38 ferromagnetic is advantageously covered with an insulating coating which contributes to good dielectric strength between the windings.
FIG. 4 shows the application of the differential transformer 34 to a bipolar cut-off device, the phase conductor 14 R being surrounded by the shunt 38 and the neutral conductor 16 being located in a lower adjacent housing. The same transformer 34 can be used for a four-pole device, in which two additional active conductors of phase 14 S, 14 T (in dotted lines) pass through the interior of the torus 36. The guidance and positioning of the active conductors inside the housing are facilitated by the presence of fins 50 of distribution associated with each half-shell 42,44.
The invention is of course by no means limited to the mode of implementation more particularly described and represented in the appended drawing, but it extends quite the contrary to any variant remaining within the framework of electrotechnical equivalences, in particular that in which the core and the shunt 38 of the differential transformer 34 would be arranged differently, or that in which the position of the shunt 38 inside the torus 36 is adjustable to adjust the tripping threshold on short circuit.
