Abstract

The appts. functions by measuring the flow of electric current , if any, between two, immersed electrodes; given that hydrocarbons do not conduct electricity while undistilled water does. Each electrode consists of a grid of spaced metal wires. The grid is about 2 mm square and the two electrodes are parallel to each other at a spacing between about 1 and 2 mm. Electric power is applied to one electrode and the other is connected to an electric meter. Appts. is used for detecting water in liq. hydrocarbons, e.g. in petrol tanks of vehicles and stationary engines, in tankers carrying petrol, diesel oil, light fuel oil etc., and in large storage tanks of these prods.
