Abstract

The vertical heat-exchanger extracts heat from the earth, or from underground rivers. It is of plastics, metal or any other material and filled with a heat-transfer medium in gaseous or liquid form. It is mounted in a borehole below ground level and at a depth found by experiment and dependent on the geological characteristics of the ground. It can be connected in series or parallel with a reservoir cooled by the heat-exchanger of a heat pump. Cooling increases the specific gravity of the medium, which is heated again in the heat exchanger, producing circulation by thermosyphon.
