<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>

<EMI ID=10.1>

<EMI ID=31.1>
<EMI ID=32.1>

Spirobxazolidines and Thiazolidines
as an herbicide antidote.
Although many herbicides are immediately toxic to a wide variety of weeds, it is known that the effect of many herbicides on major cultivated plants is not selective or at least not sufficiently selective. Therefore, many herbicides harm not only the weeds to be controlled, but to a greater or lesser degree also the desired cultivated plants. This is true of many herbicidal compounds that are commercially successful and commercially available. These herbicides include types such as triazines, urea derivatives, halogenated acetanilides, carbamates, thiol carbamates and the like. Some examples of these compounds have been described
<EMI ID = 1.1>
3,175,897, 3,185,720, 3,198,786, 3,442,945, 3,582,314, 3,780,090 and 3,952,056.
<EMI ID = 2.1>
different herbicides is particularly troublesome and unsuitable. When used in the recommended amounts in the soil to control broadleaf weeds and grasses, serious deformations or hindrances of the cultivated plants sometimes occur. This abnormal growth of the cultivated plants results in loss of yield. Research into good selective herbicides continues.
Previous attempts to overcome this problem are described. The treatment of the crop seeds with certain hormonal antagonists before planting has been described, see U.S. Pat. Nos. 3,131,509 and 3,564,768. The protective agents, as well as the herbicide in these known processes, are
<EMI ID = 3.1>
len have not been particularly successful. The said patents give specific examples and describe the treatment of seeds using compounds of a different chemical class that the present invention does not suggest.
U.S. patents 3,859,292 and 3,881,908 disclose certain N-haloacyl (2-spirocycloaliphatic) oxazolidines suitable as herbicides. There is no description or disclosure of herbicide antidote activity. The monochloroacetyl compounds are specifically disclosed.
U.S. Patents 3,959,304, 3,989,503,
4,072,688 and 4,124,372 disclose certain substituted oxazolidine and thiazolidine compounds. However, none of these patents anticipate or make obvious special compounds or the usefulness of the special compounds as a herbicidal antidote to thiol carbamate herbicides in particular for S-npropyl-NJ-di-n-propylthiol carbamate, S-ethyl-di- n-propylthiolcar-

chloro-N-carbethoxymsthyl-2'6'-diethylacetanilide. None of the patents anticipate or make obvious the herbicidal mixtures for use using N-heloacyloxazolidines substituted in the 2-position by the spirocyclohexyl moiety.
It has been found that cultivated cultivated plants can be protected from damage by herbicides of the thiol carbamate type or haloacetanilide type and that this damage can be reduced if said herbicides are used alone or mixed or combined with other compounds in many ways. Furthermore, as an alternative effect, the tolerance of the plants to these herbicides can be greatly increased by adding

haloacyloxazolidine or thiazolidine substituted in the 2-position by the spirocyclohexyl group. Therefore, the present invention also includes a two-part herbicidal system comprising a first part of one or more thiol carbamate herbicides or haloacetanilide herbicides, a second part of an effective antidote compound therefor, which antidote compound corresponds to the formula 1 of the formula sheet, wherein X is oxygen or sulfur , R is lower haloalkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and halo is at least one of chlorine, fluorine or bromine, R is hydrogen or lower alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and R2 is hydrogen or phenyl.
The compounds in which R is haloalkyl with at least two halogens, especially chlorine, are new substances.
As thiol carbamate herbicides, the present invention includes compounds of formula 2 of the formula sheet wherein R 3 is

The unacylated oxazolidine and thiazolidine intermediates for preparing the present compounds can be conveniently synthesized by reacting substituted amino alkanols or mercaptans with an appropriate aldehyde or with ketone. A comprehensive list of these connections is given in
<EMI ID = 10.1>
309 (1953). Usually, the amino alcohol or the mercaptan and the ketone or aldehyde are heated together in an inert hydrocarbon solvent and by-product water is separated from the condensed azeotropic mixture of hydrocarbon and water in a Dean-Stark water separator. The solvent is then evaporated and the product purified by distillation under reduced pressure.
Suitable reaction solvents are water-immiscible hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene and the like. A preferred solvent is benzene because of its low boiling point.
The N-haloacyloxazolidines and thiazolidines of the invention can be synthesized by reacting the corresponding intermediate oxazolidine or thiazolidine with the desired haloalkylcarbonyl chloride (also described as a haloacyl chloride) at a temperature in the range of about 50 [deg.] C in the presence of an acid acceptor. The reaction is preferably carried out in an organic solvent, which is inert under the reaction
<EMI ID = 11.1>
products which can be easily separated from the main reaction product. Although the acid acceptor may sometimes be an alkali metal salt of a weak acid such as sodium or potassium carbonate or acetate, it is recommended to use a tertiary amine. Suitable conventional tertiary amines are e.g. tri thylamine and pyridine; it is often crystalline formed as a by-product
<EMI ID = 12.1>
the reaction solvent and can be conveniently worked up by filtering the amine hydrohalide by-product, washing the residual organic phase with water and removing the reaction solvent by evaporation or distillation. Thereafter, the product can usually be purified by conventional distillation methods including under atmospheric pressure.

It is clear that the classes of herbicides described in this application have been characterized as active herbicides having such activity. The degree of this herbicidal activity varies among specific compounds and among combinations of specific compounds within the classes. Also, the degree of activity varies to some extent among the plant species to which a specific herbicidal compound or combination is applied. Therefore, a choice of a specific herbicidal compound or combination for controlling unwanted plant species can be easily made. Within the scope of the invention, damage to a desired cultivated plant species can be obtained in the presence of a specific compound or combination. The beneficial plant species, which can be obtained by this method
<EMI ID = 30.1>
specific crops to be limited.
The herbicidal compounds used in the invention are active herbicides of a general type. I.e. that the members of the classes exhibit herbicidal activity against a wide range of plant species with little or no difference between
<EMI ID = 31.1>
growth includes applying a herbicidally effective amount of the herbicidal compounds described in this application to the area or site where this control is desired.
A herbicide as used herein means a compound that controls or modifies plant growth. Such controlling or modifying effects include all deviations from a natural development, e.g. kill, slow down, defoliate, dry out, regulate, obstruct, stool, stimulate, dwarfism and the like. Plants are understood to mean germinating seeds, sprouting seedlings and existing vegetations, including the roots and the above-ground parts.
The terms "herbicide antidote" or "antidote amount" are intended to describe the effect that counteracts the normal damaging herbicide response that the herbicide would otherwise produce. Whether this should be called a medicament, an intermediate, a protective agent or the like will depend on the exact procedure. The method of processing is varied, but the effect desired is the result of the method of treating the seed, soil or furrow in which the crop is planted. To date, no systems employing the antidotes of the invention have been found to be satisfactory for this purpose.
As an alternative mode of action, the compounds of the invention may interfere with the normal herbicidal action of the thiol carbamate or haloacetanilide type herbicides or other herbicides to render them selective in their action. One observation made by the presence of the antidotes described in this application is a reduction in phytotoxicity relative to it
<EMI ID = 32.1>
herbicides for controlling weeds are used. Whichever mode of action is used, the corresponding beneficial and desired effect is the durable herbicidal effect of the thiol carbamate or haloacetanilide against weed species present with the crop, with the accompanying selectively decreased herbicidal effect on desired crop species. This benefit and utility will become clearer below.

Small flat trays were filled with Felton loamy sandy bottom. Herbicides introduced into the soil were currently applied. The bottom of each flat tray was placed in a 5 gallon. cement mixer in which the soil was mixed when the herbicides were applied using a predetermined amount of a stock solution containing 936 mg of 75.5% active ingredient in 100 cm <3> water. 1 cm <3> of the stock solution

bare suspensions and powders or spray powders. In some cases, acetone was used to dissolve poader or solid compounds so that they could be applied more efficiently to the granules.
After the flat trays were seeded, they were covered with the 1 pint bottom, which had been removed just before planting. The flat trays were placed on greenhouse banks where the temperatures were

The untreated adjacent row was used to observe some beneficial sideways movement of the antidote compound through the bottom. The degree of the effect was noted by comparison to the control.
From the above-described grain treatment test, Compound No. 1 reduced corn damage from 80% to 30% and Compound No.2 decreased corn damage from 80 to 20%.
When Compound No. 3 was used on 5 pound / acre propagation incorporated with EPTC at a pound / acre propagation introduced, barley damage was reduced from 50% to 10%.
When Compound No. 3 was used at 5 pound / acre pre-seeded and EPTC at 5 pound / acre pre-seeded, oil rapeseed damage was found to be reduced from 75 to 30%.
When compound No.9 was applied at 5 pound / acre before

non-antidote sections of the trays were compared for observed differences that would indicate lateral movement of the antidote through the bottom.
For the propagation method of introduction, the herbicide and antidote of each test group were introduced into the soil as a tank mix using a 5 gallon rotary mixer.
All flat trays were placed on greenhouse benches where

watered by sprinkling as needed to ensure good plant growth.
Control flat trays contained crops treated only with herbicides at the different amounts and methods of application.
Damage evaluations were taken 4 weeks after application of the antidote. The effectiveness of the antidote was determined by visually comparing crop and weed damage in the control and test trays to those
<EMI ID = 51.1>
The compounds that showed a strong crop damage reduction were further tested at reduced amounts.

The antidote compounds and mixtures of the invention can be used in any suitable form. Thus, the antidote compounds can be incorporated into emulsifiable liquids, emulsifiable concentrates, liquids, wettable powders, powders, granular or other suitable forms. In the preferred form, a non-phytotoxic amount of a herbicidal
<EMI ID = 87.1>
placed in the soil before or after planting the seed. It should be noted, however, that the herbicides can be introduced into the soil and then the antidote compound can be introduced into the soil. In addition, the crop seed itself can be treated with a non-phytotoxic amount of the compound and
<EMI ID = 88.1>
divided with the herbicide and subsequently treated with the herbicide. The addition of the antidote compound does not affect the herbicidal activity of the herbicides except that the activity is made selective relative to certain crops.
The amount of antidote compound present can vary between 0.01 to about 30 parts by weight of antidote compound per part by weight of herbicide. The exact amount of antidote compound will usually be determined for economic reasons for the most useful effective amount. It will be understood that a non-phytotoxic amount of the antidote compound is used in the described herbicidal mixtures.
