<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>

Method for controlling the foaming of the slag in a
pneumatic refining operation of cast iron.
The present invention relates to a method for controlling the foaming of the slag in a pneumatic refining operation of cast iron to the converter.
It is well known that during the pneumatic refining operation of cast iron in the converter, the slag supernatant of the liquid metal exhibits a foaming phenomenon which,
if not detected and controlled in time, can lead to overflows and projections out of the converter, with all the disadvantages which are the consequence.
There are already different means of detection and
control of this foaming; when blowing from above, you can
<EMI ID = 1.1>
for example observing the emission spectrum of the converter flame and, when a certain intensity of the said spectrum appears, give the lance a judicious movement.
Also known is a process for refining cast iron by blowing from above, in which the sound intensity emitted by the converter during the refining is recorded as soon as there is a decrease in this intensity which indicates an exaggeration. in the foaming phenomenon, this phenomenon is limited, for example by bringing the end of the injection lance closer to the metal bath.
In the context of processes for refining cast iron by injecting pure oxygen from above, in a converter containing liquid cast iron, a converter provided in addition with blowing nozzles below the level of the metal, the process which is the subject of the present invention. also allows to control such a foaming phenomenon.
The process, object of the present invention, in which, in a converter containing refining cast iron, an oxygen-rich gas, which may be pure oxygen, is injected from above onto or into the bath, the so-called converter being moreover provided with injection nozzles below the level of the metal (laterally or in the bottom), is essentially characterized in that, during the refining, a so-called "auxiliary" gas is injected by said nozzles. a neutral gas, for example
<EMI ID = 2.1>
records at the same time the sound spectrum emitted by the converter, spectrum informing the operator on the foaming state of the slag and in that one modifies, in an appropriate way, the flow of auxiliary gas blown when one notes that the said sound level follows a downward curve.
In practice, when the curve of this sound level drops, it is a sign that the foaming takes on an exaggerated appearance, which can be dangerous, and the reaction is, according to the invention, by increasing the flow rate of auxiliary gas blown into the bath.
Thus, in addition to a well-known action by stirring on the speed of chemical reactions between slag and cast iron, the auxiliary gas can be used as a means of controlling the foaming of the slag.
It goes without saying that the use of the sound spectrum as a means of detecting the foaming state of the slag is given here only by way of nonlimiting example. Any other known means can be used in combination with the injection of the aforementioned auxiliary gas, without thereby departing from the scope of
the present invention.
When the auxiliary gas normally used is nitrogen, it may be advantageous, at the end of refining, to replace nitrogen with argon, in order to maintain, within acceptable limits, the final level of metal in nitrogen. .
