metallurgical such as a torpedo pocket and pochetorpille for the implementation of the process.
The present invention relates to a method
for determining the level of liquid metal in a metallurgical container, and especially the level of pig iron in a pochetorpille, or in a similar container (for example a mixer
iron).
Knowledge of the level of liquid metal is

importance is considerable. Too low, this level corresponds to
insufficient filling of the container, which reduces the productivity of this metal treatment phase, which is too high, it compromises the safety of personnel and overloads the machines responsible for handling the container in question.
When the level of the metal in a container can be easily determined, for example by direct vision in said container, the problem posed is easily solvable, and does not give rise to any particular difficulty. It is not the same when the container is closed or almost closed, not suitable

A method of determining the level of liquid metal in a static oven is already known, according to which, approximately at the maximum level that can be admitted for the metal in the said oven, one or more thermocouples have been inserted into the wall of the oven. which inform the operator when the liquid metal reaches their level.
In the case where the metallurgical container is a torpedo bag, such a device seems difficult to use, in particular because of the presence of slag on the metal, slag which constitutes a thermal barrier making the correct operation of such thermocouples uncertain.

interior is difficult to access for direct inspection or easy repair and, moreover, when you start to fill it, you do not know exactly the quantity of cast iron that may remain in its bottom, nor its exact capacity depending on the level metal.
The subject of the present invention is in particular a method by which the drawbacks mentioned above can easily be remedied.
The method, object of the present invention, is essentially characterized in that, making use of a pochetorpille whose internal refractory lining is provided at least in one place, with a series of electrically reducing and electrically insulated bricks, of interest vertical size of the said coating, the said pocket is filled with a cast iron which at the time of its contact with each brick, closes an electrical circuit comprising both the said cast iron and the corresponding brick, in that the filling of the pocket thanks to the observation of successive signals caused by the successive closing of each circuit corresponding to each brick and in that one reacts, in an appropriate manner, to the appearance of signals corresponding to the brick of the highest level or in absence of one of the expected signals, for example by stopping the
The present invention also relates to a torpedo bag provided with a device which makes it possible to easily determine the level of metal in such a pocket, at the time
of its filling.
The device with which such a pochetorpille is provided essentially consists in the fact that in at least one place of its internal refractory lining and. preferably substantially along the vertical (the pocket being in the filling position), the said internal lining comprises a series of electrically conductive refractory bricks, electrically isolated from each other and arranged in successive different levels, each of these bricks being part an adequate electrical circuit, which may be specific to each brick, so that the progressive filling of
almost the entire internal volume of the pocket can be controlled by electrical signals successively coming from each of said electrical circuits.
Indeed, during the filling of the pocket, the cast iron which comes into contact successively with each conductive brick closes the appropriate electrical circuit corresponding to the brick considered. This closure can be effected in particular by contacting the cast iron with an electrically conductive refractory brick, present in the bottom of the torpedo bag, itself forming part of the appropriate circuit or circuits considered.
We can therefore be instantly notified of the level reached by the iron in the pocket and follow the rise of this level brick by brick.
Knowing by calculation, the approximate time that can take the upper level of the font to go from one. brick to the next for a given flow range, the operator is notified of the progress of filling the bag.
The absence of a signal relating to a brick, at the time when it must normally occur, indicates to the attendant either that an untimely interruption in the filling of the pocket has occurred, which he can easily check, or that the corresponding brick is destroyed or masked by an undesirable layer of non-electrically conductive slag. He can still, at this time, interrupt the filling of the bag before overflowing and have the necessary repair considered.
Different materials can be envisaged to constitute the conductive bricks considered, among which one can choose with advantage, either graphite or silicon carbide.
