CENTRUM VOOR RESEARCH IN DE METALLURGIE,
<EMI ID=1.1>

<EMI ID=4.1>

CENTRUM VOOR RESEARCH IN DE METALLURGIE,
The present invention relates to improvements to devices for protecting the metal jet in the continuous casting of metals.
The operations of casting metals from a ladle are most often carried out through an orifice made in the bottom of the ladle, an opening which makes it possible to pour the liquid metal contained in the ladle, either in an ordinary ingot mold or in a continuous casting basket, followed by a continuous casting mold.
During these casting operations, the liquid metal, at high temperature, is liable to oxidize rapidly on contact with air, in particular during its journey between
<EMI ID = 1.1>
high surface area / volume.
In addition, this jet causes, by its impact in the mold, an intense bubbling of the metal also promoting its oxidation.
In the particular case of continuous casting of open jet billets, several systems for protecting the metal jet have already been recommended. For example, the jet was surrounded with a liquid film of suitable gas. This process effectively reduced the importance of the aforementioned drawbacks, but its device proved to be costly and difficult to implement.
Another method consists in surrounding the jet by means of a protective tube, into which a neutral gas can be injected. However, this device can only be put in place after the opening of the line and cannot be removed without disturbing the casting jet.
The present invention relates to a device by means of which the drawbacks mentioned above can easily be eliminated.
The device, object of the present invention, is essentially characterized in that it comprises, intended to be placed vertically under a continuous casting basket, coaxially with the outlet opening of the liquid metal and above an ingot mold of continuous casting, a tube made of an internal coating of a refractory material surrounded by a metal jacket

tudinal, so as to allow the internal lining jacket assembly to open in the same direction.
According to the invention, the tightness of the tube in the closed position is ensured by means of suitable, refractory and flexible joints, lining said parts, in the places where they come from.

of casting.
According to an advantageous variant of this device, one or more conduits formed through the internal coating and the jacket make it possible to supply neutral or inert gas to the interior of the tube, so as to keep it completely protected from the air,
<EMI ID = 4.1>
tielle of the conduits is, for this purpose, especially advantageous, they can also be oriented obliquely in the tube.
According to another advantageous variant of this device, the tube is provided, at a determined distance from each of its two ends, with a series of holes of suitable diameter, preferably arranged substantially on a circumference, along a plane perpendicular to the axis of the tube, all the holes of the same series being oriented at an appropriate angle towards the corresponding end of the tube. The device thus described also comprises means for supplying the appropriate gas with the two series of holes, the said means possibly being common to said two series of holes.
This variant has the advantage of being able to protect the tube against any return of air by the effect of a trunk at its upper part on the tundish side and at its lower part
to protect the casting jet from its exit from the tube to the meniscus of the liquid metal in the continuous casting mold.
The device of the invention can also be provided with an apparatus for placing it below or moving it from below the tundish, the application of this device against the
