<EMI ID=2.1>

Ball mill
The present invention aims to improve the performance of ball mills.
Known ball mills include, in known manner
) itself, a rotary grinding chamber, containing movable grinding bodies. These are generally homogeneous spherical bodies, for example of cast iron or hard steel. Under the action of the rotation of the grinding chamber, usually around a horizontal or oblique axis, these spherical grinding bodies roll on each other, causing a gradual fragmentation of the material to be ground, introduced into the grinding room .
All other things being equal, the crushing efficiency of the mills
ball, i.e. the average particle size reduction rate per unit of operating time, is all the better as
the probability of collision between crushing bodies and matter
to grind is great.
To improve the probability of collision, it is obviously possible to increase the number of crushing bodies, but this results in the disadvantage of a corresponding reduction in the useful volume of
the grinding chamber.
To remedy this disadvantage, it is also possible to reduce the dimensions of the grinding bodies. Such a reduction in the dimensions of the bodies
<EMI ID = 1.1>
impact energy during grinding, which is unfavorable to the grinding efficiency.
To improve the grinding yield of ball mills, without affecting the useful volume of the grinding chambers, it was proposed in Belgian patent 595119 of September 16, 1960, to fix projections on the internal face of the grinding chambers. These known mills, however, have the disadvantage of being complicated and expensive construction and of being not very robust, the projections being liable to break under the impact of the grinding bodies. Furthermore, during the operation of the grinder, grinding bodies and heaps of material to be ground risk being trapped between the projections, causing the formation of imbalances.
The invention aims to provide an improved ball mill, which avoids the aforementioned drawbacks of known mills.
To this end, the invention relates to a ball mill, comprising grinding bodies, movable in a rotary grinding chamber, according to the invention, the distance between the center of gravity and the peripheral surface of at least part of the bodies grinding is non-uniform.
In the mill according to the invention, the grinding chamber has the function of containing the grinding bodies and the material to be ground.
Although its shape is not critical to the invention, it
is generally cylindrical or conical and mounted for rotation on
a horizontal or oblique axis. Alternatively, it may also have a polygonal cross section, for example hexagonal or octagonal. It is made of a hard material, with high resistance to impact and abrasion, generally made of alloy steel.
The grinding bodies are also made of a hard material, having a high resistance to impact and abrasion, for example cast iron or alloy steel.
According to the invention, part of the grinding bodies are designed to
such that the distance from their center of gravity to
their peripheral surface is non-uniform.
To this end, according to the invention, said grinding bodies can
be free of axis and center of symmetry.
Alternatively, they may also have an axis of symmetry
and possibly a center of symmetry.
In the case where these grinding bodies have a center of symmetry, for example in the case of ellipsoidal or spherical grinding bodies, their specific mass is not homogeneous; for this purpose
they can for example each consist of an assembly of materials of different specific weights or, alternatively,
present local recesses.
During the operation of the grinder according to the invention, the grinding bodies whose distance between the center of gravity and the peripheral surface is non-uniform, are animated by disordered movements in the grinding chamber, which, all other things being equal, increases the probability of collision between the crushing bodies and
the material to be ground.
The mill according to the invention thus has the advantage of

grinding, optimum working volume in the grinding chamber and great robustness.
Special features and details of the invention will emerge from the following description of a few exemplary embodiments of the mill according to the invention.
According to a first embodiment of the invention, the crusher comprises a cylindrical grinding chamber, mounted for rotation
on horizontal bearings. The grinding bodies, housed in the enclosure, include ovoid masses of alloy steel or cast iron, of homogeneous specific mass.
According to a second embodiment of the invention, the grinding bodies comprise steel or cast iron spheres, and have internal recesses; these are arranged so that the center of gravity of each spherical grinding body is distinct from its geometric center.
According to a third embodiment of the invention, the grinding bodies are spheres each formed by the assembly of several spherical segments made of materials of different specific masses, secured by pins. For example, each spherical grinding body may be constituted by the assembly of three spherical segments of the same dimensions, respectively in alloy steel, in bronze and in cobalt alloy.
In the grinder according to the invention, the grinding bodies whose distance between the center of gravity and the peripheral surface is
not uniform, can all have the same shape and the same dimensions

<EMI ID = 4.1>
mixture of spherical grinding bodies of non-homogeneous specific mass and ovoid grinding bodies.
As a variant, the grinder can also contain spherical bodies of homogeneous specific mass, in addition to the grinding bodies whose distance between the center of gravity and the peripheral surface is not uniform.
The crusher according to the invention has many applications, among which include the grinding of ores, the grinding of cement or klinker and the grinding of stones.
