<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>

<EMI ID=6.1>
<EMI ID=7.1>
<EMI ID=8.1>
<EMI ID=9.1>

ELECTRICALLY HEATED FUSION OVEN INTENDED FOR AGGRESSIVE MINERAL MATERIALS WITH A HIGH TO HIGH VISCOSITY CURVE
The present invention relates to a melting furnace
with electric heating intended in particular for the melting of highly aggressive mineral materials, exhibiting steep viscosity curves, consisting of a masonry of refractory materials supported by a framework and comprising electrodes for supplying electrical energy to the.
molten bath as well as means for depositing a mixture of materials on the molten bath.
For a long time, minerals and in particular glasses have undergone melting in melting basins operating under full electric heating. These melting basins qualified as conventional basins, however, have the drawback that they do not allow very aggressive baths to be treated, due to their construction and that in particular it is not possible to melt mixtures which have a point of relatively high melting and which are further characterized by a relatively low conductivity and by a very steep viscosity curve.
The term “steeply sloped viscosity curve” is understood to mean the fact that reduced temperature changes lead to significant changes in viscosity, that is to say that unlike conventional glasses, the viscosity values change to reach a very fluid state. already under the influence of greatly reduced temperature increase. Another disadvantage of mixtures of the type
mentioned consists in the fact that one cannot have recourse
to purely classical fusion techniques, that is to say
with heating by burners, because the possibilities of radiation are very low; this has the consequence that for low layer thicknesses of less than 10 cm a pronounced absorption of the radiation already occurs and that the lower layers are therefore not sufficiently heated.
The present invention therefore aims to provide a melting basin for the melting of the aforementioned mixtures which are difficult to melt, and which makes it possible in particular to perform the melting of a mixture of fly ash, lime and possibly sand, which subsequently undergoes sintering.
A furnace according to the invention should be particularly well suited to the requirements which are imposed on it and for it to be possible, despite the aggressiveness of the molten bath, to achieve a sufficiently long service life; despite the
unfavorable viscosity-temperature ratio, it must also be possible to achieve a sufficient depth of the melt and a regular sample of the melt. Mixtures of the aforementioned composition such as for example those which according to the
German patent 2,122,027 are further processed into cement after their melting, were considered until now as
non-fusible on an industrial scale. A particular object assigned by the invention is therefore to provide a melting furnace which makes melting economically possible on an industrial scale, the operation of the furnace being sufficiently safe for untrained personnel to be able to use it in developing countries, although the composition of the mixture may be different from case to case.
The aim thus aimed for is solved in a furnace of the type mentioned above owing to the fact that electrodes having a relatively large length penetrate into the molten bath and that in the middle of the melting basin, there is arranged an evacuation outlet provided with 'a central opening which penetrates upwardly into the bath and the upper edge of which extends below the surface of the bath adjacent thereto.
Advantageously, the oven has in plan la.forme
a regular circle or polygon with a large number of angles and, in order to create a cooler peripheral zone of the furnace load in order to preserve the lining material, the wall
of the furnace in the zone of the molten bath can, from bottom to top, be inclined outwards and above the molten bath can then extend vertically.
To avoid excessive corrosion in the area of the flow outlet, that is to say in the area where the molten material is taken, this area has in its upper part channels extending upward and inclined outside
inward, terminating above below the surface of the weld pool, adjacent to it in a central opening
of the flow outlet. The mounting and central opening extend to the height of a revolving cover.
Below the flow opening, gas or oil burners can be arranged, the combustion gases of which can flow upwards into the central opening. According to another embodiment, it is possible to have the heating elements suspended in the central opening.
In order to avoid hot zones in the peripheral zones, the electrodes are advantageously slipped into
the bottom of the basin and are arranged in at least two concentric rings with respect to the flow outlet at a significant distance therefrom and from the outer wall.
To cause the mixture to melt in the areas between the outer wall and the flow outlet,
the oven is advantageously covered by a rotating cover, which has openings and means for distributing the
mixture to be melted on the molten bath according to requirements. This revolving cover can easily allow repair of the discharge outlet without having to remove the cover and has an intermediate part under the cover of the discharge outlet which is easy to remove, without contact with the feed materials.
The principle of this revolving cover is described
in detail in European patent application 78 200 395.8, in the name Sorg GmbH & Co. KG, and a detailed description is therefore not necessary.
The invention will be described in more detail using
of a preferred embodiment of the invention, with reference to the accompanying drawings. These illustrate what: aui precedes and represent :! Figure 1, .a schematic view of the furnace according to the invention in vertical section; Figure 2, a schematic section through the oven of Figure, 1 1 in a horizontal plane and Figure 3, a schematic section to show the design of the central exhaust outlet of the oven.
The melting tank according to the invention for what
mainly concerns the wall parts which enter into
contact with the molten bath or the softened mixture, is constituted
in magnesite-chromium elements, if no
chromium oxide elements. It appeared that these materials when not subjected to the influence of a temperature
too high, i.e. at temperatures which are not
<EMI ID = 1.1>
sufficient to achieve satisfactory operation of the oven. An essential element, however, is in this case that the distance of the electrodes from the walls is in any event sufficiently large to ensure that a cold molten bath or a cold glass forms on the wall, and possibly even a crystallized phase.
In the context of the invention, the molten bath can also be qualified as glass, because the molten mixture consists in a large proportion of glass.
The process of making a cold zone at the walls and above the bottom of the furnace can be maintained because with the help of the revolving cover for the supply of the batch material, most of the material is amassed at the outer periphery, so that when it
f produces softening in the peripheral zone, the material
<EMI ID = 2.1>
zone is again filled with unmelted material.
As a result of steep viscosity curves
<EMI ID = 3.1>
of the basin, a tower made of chromium oxide element, which is made of individual blocks and which is then bored.
The tower or evacuation outlet 6 has near the central passage 7 extending vertically, a number of channels 8 extending inclined from the outside to the inside upwards and which open into the central opening .
In this way, a possibly unmelted material is prevented from being entrained with the molten bath.
out of the blanket to melt. It should be noted, however, that according to the invention, a certain amount '
of unmelted material of the order of about 5% at most can be taken at the same time as the molten bath.
The construction of the melting furnace according to the invention. is conventional, that is to say that the masonry of the wall of the furnace and the bottom of the furnace are maintained by an external support frame of suitable iron or steel joists.
The masonry is represented by the mark 1 and the framework by the mark 2. In the furnace is the zone of the molten bath 3 onto which the vitrifiable mixture 4 is brought. The electrodes 5 are arranged in one or more concentric rings around the flow outlet 6; they pass through the bottom of the furnace
and penetrate over a relatively large height into the molten bath, that is to say more than half of the height thereof. Due to the fact that for electrodes, the energy density area <EMI ID = 4.1>
the wall and the flow outlet, which results in the necessarily high melting temperature not being reached
<EMI ID = 5.1>
sufficient thermal .. The mixture to be melted and the molten bath therefore constitute a protective layer whose
temperature decreases towards the outside, so that the temperature of the walls does not in any case exceed the admissible value.
<EMI ID = 6.1>
chromium oxide, and can therefore undergo a higher thermal stress than the magnesite-chromium elements of which the bottom and the wall of the furnace are preferably made.
The electrodes 5 to be used have a relatively large diameter of the order of 60 to 80 mm and are provided
internal cooling, which is known per se. Mounting
and the connection of the electrodes are made so that
neighboring electrodes are mounted in different phases,
so that a main current flow always takes place
from an electrode to its neighbor. By this measurement, energy is almost always released in concentric rings in order to
do not thermally overload the flow area.
To achieve a sufficiently high melting temperature of the molten bath, the total free surface of the bath is covered with a layer of the mixture to be melted. In order to prevent the proportion of unmelted material from becoming too large during
of the sample, the central passage has the aforementioned inclined channels 8, which terminate in the central opening .17, so that an overflow of material or the penetration of the mixture
melting from above is reliably prevented.
Through the inclined channels exclusively molten material arrives from the melting zone into the flow outlet 6
<EMI ID = 7.1>
<EMI ID = 8.1>
molten bath,. in the oven without the need for a feeder or a glass level indicator.
By the free overflow device, only a flow of an amount of molten material equal to that produced in the furnace occurs. Bath depth in the pool
To do this, the melting point is sufficiently large so that at the bottom as well as at the walls a cold phase is produced, possibly consisting of crystallized materials to obtain an insulating layer.
By arranging the electrodes in two rings, it is possible to influence a centrifugal or centripedal flow; in the case
where the inner electrodes receive a higher power supply, there is a large flow, so that surface glass is pushed out of the center of the basin.
In this way one can to a certain extent cause
a displacement of the floating batch mixture, towards the center
or towards the periphery.
Moreover, in this way we can obtain that in
the outside electrodes the temperature is lower, which
has the consequence that the material only undergoes the beginning of fusion at these electrodes, while the inner electrode ring causes the final fusion.
In order to be able to set the necessary temperature
in the central passage 7 for the flow of the molten batch mixture, without causing overheating of the outlet
<EMI ID = 9.1>
gas or oil 13, which are disposed laterally in relation to the flowing material, in an opening 12 in the refractory lining. The outlet 6 is also provided with pipes 14
in which a refrigerant circulates, in order to maintain
temperature within the desired range. In another form of execution
from the outlet, 17 heating elements are suspended from above
in this one.
The oven itself is closed above by a
revolving cover 16. Due to the fact that the evacuation part extends into this cover, it is possible after lowering the level
molten bath, repair or inspect the flow outlet without any difficulty. This part
is the part which undergoes the most important thermal stress
and is therefore the one that normally must undergo the
most frequent repairs or replacements. The rotary cover 16 further comprises, in a manner known per se, thus
that it has been described in detail in the European patent application
78 200 395.8 previously mentioned, means for bringing the vitrifiable material to the surface of the bath at desired points and
in the desired quantity. These means are constituted by intermediate feed conveyors and storage silos, from which the material to be melted is fed through openings provided in the cover and protected. The rotating cover
undergoes a continuous rotational movement on a vertical axis above
of the material to be melted so that the openings run through
circles concentric with the axis of rotation; by
a choice of the quantitative ratios of matter to be melted in
the various circular zones, a desired quantitative distribution can be achieved over the mass of material to be melted which covers the molten bath. The details to this effect are expressly described in the aforementioned European patent application.
The furnace according to the invention offers for the first time the possibility of causing melting economically
mixtures which are difficult to melt, which exhibit significant aggressiveness and which are characterized by steep viscosity curves. In this way, it becomes possible to provide base material for further processing into cement, starting from volatile ash, lime and possibly sand.
