<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>
i The Chemistry of Céments, n[deg.] 2, p. 21).

"Process for the preparation of artificial slags, artificial slags thus obtained and their use".
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of artificial slag comprising the preparation = 'a charge comprising at least, in free or combined form, lime, silica and alumina, and the total melting of this charge. , the chemical composition of this filler being such that the molten artificial slag comprises at least 45 to 52% of CaO, 15 to
<EMI ID = 1.1>
artificial tier obtained and the uses of this artificial slag.
By the term "artificial slag" is meant a product of chemical composition similar to the slag obtained by metallurgical means, such as for example blast furnace slag, but which is not a by-product of a metallurgical process.
It is in fact known to harvest certain blast furnace slags in order to manufacture a slag cement therefrom. This blast furnace slag has the following composition: 30 to 50% of
<EMI ID = 2.1>
i The Chemistry of Cements, n [deg.] 2, p. 21). The slag is produced in a blast furnace and the starting materials are iron ore, coke and fondants.
There is known a process for the preparation of artificial slag comprising the mixture of ash from power plants or
of slag heaps with calcium carbonate, cooking
of this mixture at a temperature of about 1300 [deg.] C and the melting of the cooked mixture at a temperature of about 1500 [deg.] C, the firing and melting being carried out in a complex of furnaces (see patent Belgian
n [deg.] 766.032). In the case where the iron oxide content is sufficiently high in the load, it is provided according to the process
of this patent to greatly exceed the frank melting temperature, up to 1800 [deg.] C to promote the separation of dense metallic elements which are deposited at the bottom of the furnace, to recover these metallic elements and then to cool the slag to 1500 [deg.] C to be able to sink it. The applicant for this patent then mentions that during this phase, the slag obtained is purified by white binder.
According to the above process, the molten slag is cooled rapidly by soaking in water and wet ground to a fineness of grinding corresponding to a specific surface greater than a minimum of 5000 cm <2> / g measured by the Blaine's method.
According to the blege patent n [deg.] 824,788, it is known to prepare according to the process described in Belgian patent 766,032 a molten slag whose chemical composition comprises 42 to 52% of CaO, 12 to 22% of A1203 and 28 to 33 % of Si02 -
The process according to the aforementioned Belgian patents however has the drawbacks that it requires two heating operations and a complex of furnaces and that the grinding phase must be carried out in a humid environment in order to obtain the desired fineness. In fact, it is then necessary to carry out the drying subsequently in an enclosure having orifices for discharging the steam. Given the fineness of the grain of the product obtained, insurmountable problems of environmental pollution arise and the drying itself requires a great deal of energy consumption. Finally, it is not advisable to add an active charge or a catalyst to the ground binder if the drying has not been carried out in depth.
Dry grinding is known in the cement industry and it is generally carried out in ball mills which do not make it possible to obtain a granulation fineness such as that referred to above.
On the other hand, the process for separating dense metallic elements from the slag according to the Belgian patent
766.032 has almost insurmountable drawbacks resulting from the thermal shocks to which the refractory materials of the furnace would be subjected during heating to 1800 [deg.] C then cooling to 1500 [deg.] C.
The present intention aims to develop a process for the preparation of simple artificial slag which makes it possible to avoid the drawbacks described above.
According to the present invention, the prepared charge is meltable at a temperature between 1400 and 1550 [deg.] C and is capable of vitrifying after melting and the charge is brought to full melting in a single tank in a single heating operation. , at a constant temperature, obtained electrically.
The composition of the filler to be introduced into the process according to the invention can vary depending on the nature of the raw dobby and the quality of the product produced. The filler consists of an intimate mixture of materials necessarily containing lime, silica, and alumina. Some others
<EMI ID = 3.1>
iron, manganese, sodium, potassium, etc.
The composition of the mixture must be such that after fusing it is liable to suitably vitrify it, and that the artificial slag obtained has the composition mentioned above. As can be seen from the single annexed figure which represents a dia-

Lime can come from any natural rock or from any by-product or industrial waste containing, under free or combined farm, CaO. Lime can be extracted from limestone, chalk, gypsum, tufa, residual ash from the combustion of coal, steel slag (acid slag, basic slag, LD slag), cullet, etc.
The decarbonation of the limestone can be done scit before the melting or during the melting of the charge.
Silica can come from any natural rock or from
<EMI ID = 6.1>
sand, volcanic or sediment rocks, quartzite, psammite, residual ash from coal combustion,
coal, kaolin, pozzolans, iron and steel slags
(acid slag, basic slag, LD slag ...), coal heaps, slag, etc ....
Alumina can come from any natural rock or from any by-product or industrial waste containing, in free form
or combined, of the A1203. Alumina can be extracted from clay,
slates, shale, bauxite, sand, coal, volcanic or sediment rocks, pozzolans, kaolin, residual ash from coal combustion, slag heaps
of coal, slag, laundry residues, cullet,
brick waste, iron and steel slag (acid slag, basic slag, LD slag, etc.).
To obtain an intimate mixture of materials during melting, they must be in the form of grains with a particle size of less than 5 mm; grinding may be necessary.
Products originally in the form of fine grains
are particularly interesting (slag, sands, ash from power plants, etc.). If the water content is excessive, the products are dried beforehand.
The melting of the charge can be carried out in an electric furnace, for example with a submerged electrode. It is also possible to provide additional heating of the melt, for example by means of gaseous, liquid or solid fuel burners or even by combustion of the contents of the charge. This auxiliary heating obviously requires the presence or addition of an oxidizer containing oxygen.
According to a particular embodiment of the invention, the melting of the charge is carried out in a reducing medium for a period sufficient to obtain the reduction of the iron oxide contained in the charge, the deposition of the metallic iron obtained, with possible evacuation of the latter, and the formation of a white artificial slag.
According to an improved embodiment of the invention, the charge is brought, continuously and in a distributed manner, to the surface of the molten mass contained in a polygonal or circular tank heated by an immersed electrode, the molten mass is brought to circulate in the tank so as to pass compulsorily in the maximum heating zone of the electrodes, before reaching the outlet of the tank, and the molten slag thus obtained is continuously discharged from the tank through this outlet.
According to an improved embodiment of the invention, the method further comprises vitrification of the artificial slag by soaking, with granulation of the latter, the optional drying of the granulated artificial slag and the dry grinding of the granulated artificial milk, so as to obtain a ground artificial slag having a specific surface area of between 5,000 cm <2> / g and
10,000 cm <2> / g. It is advantageous to carry out the grinding in question in a vibrating crusher with recycling.
The present invention also relates to the artificial slag obtained by the process according to the invention and a feature of this invention is that the use of the molten slag obtained can be done simultaneously or successively, in particular for the manufacture of hydraulic binder, glass, fiber from slag, cellular slag, etc.
From the same load, and the same furnace, it is indeed possible to simultaneously manufacture several of the following four products: hydraulic binder, glass, fiber
