<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>
remmende effekten de doeltreffendheid van de behandeling zelf in gevaar kunnen brengen;
<EMI ID=4.1>

The invention relates to a method for purifying waste water, in particular intended for waste water from coking plants.
One of the most widely used methods for cleaning coking plant wastewater involves primarily the elimination of the volatile mineral compounds
<EMI ID = 1.1>
bonds by distillation or by steam removal (stripping) and simultaneous treatment with lime or sodium to liberate the bound ammonia salts. Subsequently, the remaining phenolic compounds are removed from the water as well as the non-volatile elements by biological oxidation; the ammonia-containing vapors are then destroyed in suitable combustion plants with controlled formation of nitrogen oxides, or treated with sulfuric acid to obtain ammonia sulfate.
Such a desorption method is extremely important in the cleaning process of waste water from coking plants. When this method is inadequate, this leads in particular to the following drawbacks:
<EMI ID = 2.1>
inhibitory effects may compromise the effectiveness of the treatment itself;
b. the need for additional final treatment before the water
is discharged into the natural environment (e.g. by treatment with the aid of activated carbon, ...) <EMI ID = 3.1> baths, because residual volatile substances are taken along.
It is clear from this that the desorption process, whether accomplished by distillation or stripping, must be carried out to nearly one hundred percent result in order to be considered sufficiently effective.
To this end, a method has already been proposed in which use is made of a stripping column in which in particular a certain number of perforated, substantially horizontal plates are arranged, which are placed one above the other and in which the water to be purified is supplied in the upper part, while steam the lower part is entered and on one or more levels from the side a strong base.
In this process, the ammonia compounds, either in the form of volatile salts or in the form of solid salts, are almost completely removed from the waste water, while the other compounds, such as from phenol, etc., are removed by means of a biological oxidation process.
It has also already been proposed that described above
<EMI ID = 4.1>
the phenolic compounds are liberated; in this case it is ensured that no ammonia vapors pass through the zone where the phenolic compounds are eliminated,
A known operation in all these methods consists in giving a basic character to the local environment at one or more points in the cleaning installation, which can be realized by the introduction of basic elements, such as in particular calcium hydroxide Ca (OH) 2 .
The presence of such a base is certain
<EMI ID = 5.1>
to deposition phenomena in the room, where the reactions take place between the water to be purified and the base thus introduced, while such deposits also occur in the pipes and the spaces where the lime mixtures pass, which are partly carried along by the "stripped" water, in the especially in the space where the stripping of the ammonia compounds released by the base treatment takes place.
The deposits are formed by reaction products of the introduced base with the solid ammonia salts. Among these pro-

the removal of ammonia compounds and phenolic compounds from waste water from coking plants, without the risk of deposits occurring.
In a process in which waste water is stripped to remove ammonia compounds in the presence of calcium oxides or hydroxides (hereinafter referred to as basic compounds), and optionally phenolic compounds in an acidic medium, the water containing mixtures of basic compounds is proposed according to the invention. contains compounds which have reacted with solid ammonia salts, by passing a space in which a separation is effected between on the one hand most of the aqueous phase (clarified water) and on the other hand the mentioned mixtures with a small part of the residual water, whereby the clarified water is stripped separately to remove the ammonia compounds liberated by the basic compounds and the mixtures, as well as the minor portion of residual water,
are also in turn subjected to a cleaning operation to remove

According to another embodiment of the disclosed
<EMI ID = 10.1> of the ammonia compounds liberated by the basic treatment, while the mixtures as well as the residual water are in turn degassed, e.g. by steam stripping, whereby the removed ammonia compounds are fed back into the stripping column at the bottom
the zone where stripping of the volatile compounds is performed.
In yet another embodiment of the invention, the water and the mixtures are separated from each other
by simple gravity settling,

ping column remains free of deposits from the aforementioned
<EMI ID = 15.1> settling mixtures, allowing a direct recovery of the heat by preheating the waste water to be treated, using a conventional heat exchanger with pipes or plates.
Furthermore, it is easily possible to change the dimensions of the

For clarification of the invention, some exemplary embodiments will be described with reference to the drawing.

7 of the column 1 after having flowed through the upper part 8 where the stripping of the volatile ammonia compounds has taken place, the volatile ammonia compounds being removed through the top of the column via 9. The reaction product between the waste water 3 and the lime milk 6, as it is formed in the lower part 7, is discharged sideways via the line to a reservoir 24, which is fed on the one hand via this line 10 with lime milk and on the other hand with waste water which still contains a part. of the ammonia compounds liberated during the basic treatment, which have not yet been able to escape with the steam supplied via 4. These two products are schematically indicated by 12 and 13 in the reservoir 24.
This reservoir functions as a separator 12-13, e.g. by settling and allows clarified water to be fed through 14 to an auxiliary stripping column 15, while the mixture or sludge goes through 16 to a cleaning plant. The ammonia compounds still present are discharged with this steam from the reservoir 25 via line 27 and introduced at 28 at the bottom of the upper part 8 of column 1. The mixtures or sludge thus freed from ammonia compounds are transferred via 29 to a thickener.

This waste water 3 is collected in the lower part 7 of the column 1 after it has passed through the upper part 8 where the stripping of the volatile ammonia compounds takes place, the ammonia vapors being discharged via 9 in the top surface of the column 1.
The product of the reactions between the waste water 3 and the lime milk 6, which take place in the lower part 7, is discharged to the side via line 10 to a reservoir 24, which is thus on the one hand fed via this line.

15 can be discharged and the mixtures or sludge via 16 to a cleaning installation. In the column 15, the clarified water is subjected to a stripping process with the aid of steam supplied through 17 at the bottom of the column 15; the ammonia compounds liberated during the basic treatment are transferred to the steam via

The mixture thus treated is fed via 29 to a thickener 30, which separates the water still present. This waste water with bound ammonia compounds is recycled via line 33 at the bottom of column 1 in zone 7, where the reactions for the release of the bound ammonia compounds are carried out by means of lime. The mixtures are further removed via 32. The mixture or sludge contains only a very small amount of ammonia compounds. Optionally, steam formed during a thermal drying of the sludge can be fed back into column 1 at 39 via line 33.
FIG. 4 schematically shows a device in which the waste water is likewise freed of phenolic compounds. FIG. 4 is an adaptation of the scheme of FIG. 3. Like reference numerals have been used for like parts. In addition, part of the stripping column is shown at 40 where the phenolic compounds are eliminated. This part is fed with steam for stripping <EMI ID = 25.1>
