<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>

<EMI ID=9.1>
<EMI ID=10.1>
<EMI ID=11.1>

Advanced training in control and force transmission rods.
is extended towards the center of the connecting rod by a cylindrical or conical skirt against which the cylindrical part of the connecting rod body rests and tightens, this skirt being arranged to have a certain radial flexibility. For this purpose, it may include notches distributed over its free end.
In addition, preferably it tapers towards this end.
This flexibility of the skirt allows it to yield radially under the action of the deformations of the connecting rod body which is supported on it and to avoid excessively brutal stresses on this body.
This same flexibility makes it possible to carry out an external hooping of the connecting rod body without causing disorganization of the fibrous composite in the region of the end pieces. This improves the impact resistance of the projectiles, the effect of which is then limited to a simple perforation.
The following description, with reference to the appended drawing given by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the particularities which emerge both from the drawing and from the text forming, of course, part of said invention. .
FIG. 1 is a view showing, part in elevation and part in axial section, a control rod according to the invention.
Figures 2 and 3 show in elevation, respectively one of the end metal parts and the mandrel for producing the connecting rod.
FIG. 4 shows on a larger scale and by way of example a section of a ribbon of coated fibers, which can be used for implementing the invention. Figure 5 is a section along V-V of Figure 1 in a phase of manufacture. Fig. 6 of the drawing shows another embodiment. In this figure, one of the end pieces is shown half in axial section and half in elevation.
The general shape of the control rod can be seen clearly in FIG. 1. It comprises a tubular body
1 ending at each of its ends with a frustoconical part 2 at the end of which the part must be fixed. The invention relates to control and force transmission rods which can be used in particular, but not exclusively, in aeronautical construction.
As is known, the moving parts of a modern aircraft, whether it is the steering and elevator parts or. the moving parts of a variable-configuration propellant nozzle are generally controlled by hydraulic jacks, the moving part of which is connected by a connecting rod to the member to be controlled.
The connecting rods are generally constituted by a metal tube of sufficient diameter to ensure resistance to the forces with a moderate thickness of metal, this tube terminating at the ends with conical parts which are used for fixing the articulation parts of the connecting rod and have a gradually increasing thickness towards the smallest diameter to take account of the forces.
On the other hand, the appearance on the market of particular fibers having high strengths for a minimal weight, such as carbon fibers, boron fibers, fibers of certain polyamides, glass fibers, etc.,
<EMI ID = 1.1>
made with such fibers. These fibers are used in the form of ribbons comprising parallel fibers coated with a synthetic resin not yet polymerized, in particular an epoxy resin.
The Applicants have raised the problem of making connecting rods with such fibers. This problem presents a particular difficulty with regard to the fixing of the end parts which must ensure the articulation of the connecting rod, these parts having in fact to be linked to the fiber body, so as to ensure good transmission of forces, both in traction than in compression.
In accordance with one of the features of the invention,
<EMI ID = 2.1>
bres of the connecting rod is clamped by shrinking against a frustoconical bearing of the same shape provided on a metal end piece engaged inside said end and having the threads or other machining necessary for the assembly and adjustment of the end equipment of the connecting rod.
It is advantageous for each of the metal end pieces to form an eye (not shown) intended to constitute the articulation of the connecting rod or other end equipment.
According to the invention, to manufacture this connecting rods, the procedure is as follows, according to an exemplary embodiment.
We take a mandrel 5 having the same general shape as the connecting rod, but produced in such a way that after shaping
<EMI ID = 3.1>
drin, despite the tapered shapes of the ends of the connecting rod. Various embodiments of such mandrels are well known to those skilled in the art.
It is possible, for example, to use a mandrel in several pieces, the separation surfaces of which are parallel to the axis of the connecting rod, so that after removal of the central part, of transverse dimension small enough to be removed by the ends, the others parts can also be removed, The mandrel can also be made of sand agglomerated easy-
<EMI ID = 4.1>
neutral liquid or a hot melt.
The mandrel comprises at each of its ends a frustoconical bearing surface 4 which is slightly recessed, following a res-
<EMI ID = 5.1>
Drin, the metal tubular end piece 6 is fitted which is shown in FIG. 1 in section and in FIG. 2 in elevation.
This end piece 6 comprises a threaded cylindrical part to receive the articulation eye of the connecting rod
or other end equipment not shown, a protruding collar 8 and a frustoconical part 9 which exactly matches the scope 4 of the mandrel. The thickness at the end of this part 9 is equal to the height of the projection 5, so that the external surface of the frustoconical part 9 extends that of the mandrel, This external surface is provided with undulations or ridges 10 of revolution around the axis of the part,
The mandrel being thus equipped with the two end pieces

fibers chosen coated in epoxy resin not yet polymerized, these tapes thus being slightly tacky. In these tapes, the fibers may be parallel or otherwise arranged, for example. braided. The number of fibers is va-

superimposes a second layer of tape wound this time in a helix from end to end of the first layer, then a third lay parallel to the generatrices like the first, then a fourth layer in a helix, but in the opposite direction to the second layer and so on .
This succession of layers can be greatly modified.
It is in particular possible to modify the orientation of the successive layers, or even to provide looters; superimposed openings of the same orientation and possibly layers of fibers.
of different natures.
It is noted that the variation in the width of the overlaps on the truncated ends of the mandrel has the effect of generating a progressive increase in the thickness on these ends between the large base and the small base of the truncated cones, which is favorable to the mechanical strength of the connecting rod.
Then, at each end, all the layers are tightened on the metal end piece 6 strongly enough so that the layers come to match the corrugations or the 'striations 10. This tightening is done by winding fibers 12 similar to those which have already been indicated, with the possible use of metal rings, the whole constituting
hooping.
The assembly is then placed in an oven to polymerize the resin which becomes rigid around the fibers which it coats, after which the mandrel is removed.
This gives a light connecting rod with good strength qualities. The transmission of forces between the metal end pieces 6 and the fiber body 1 is perfectly ensured. Indeed, in tension, the frustoconical shape as well as the undulations or the ridges of the part 9 of the end pieces 6 and the hooping of the over-thickened ends 2 of the same shape of the connecting rod body on this part prevent any sliding and any tensile work of the bonding. between part 6 and end 2 of the connecting rod body. On the other hand, in compression, each end piece 6 pushes by its collar 8 the shrinking block and the ex-
<EMI ID = 10.1>
tangential forces are transmitted to the portion of the connecting rod body clamped between this end piece and the shrinking block, the bonding also working in compression between the hoop and part 2 of the connecting rod.
In the embodiment of FIG. 6 which is the preferred embodiment, each of the metal end pieces 6 extends towards the inside of the connecting rod body, in the cylindrical part of this body, by a skirt 15, the external surface of which is cylindrical or conical. This skirt is provided on its free edge with 16 scalloped notches distributed over its
<EMI ID = 11.1>
some radial flexibility.
For the same purpose, the skirt tapers towards its free edge, its internal surface thus being conical.
The shape of the skirt in the cylindrical part of the connecting rod body and the radial flexibility defined above mean that, on the one hand, the body of the connecting rod is well supported on the end piece and that, on the other hand, small variations in 'thickness of the connecting rod body in expansion or contraction which may occur in the transmission of compressive or tensile forces, are received by elastic deformations of the skirt 15, without the connecting rod body being subjected to excessive local stresses brutal.
Naturally, the mandrel described with reference to the figure
3 is modified to take account of the new shape of the end caps,
We also notice on the drawing / other difference with
the connecting rod described with reference to FIG. 1.
Instead of stopping a little before the collar 8 ending each of the end pieces, the fibrous structure constituting the connecting rod body is extended and folded against the internal face of the collar, as seen in 8a, so that the hoop 12 tightens the fibrous structure both against the truncated bearing 9 and against the collar 8. Experience has shown that a more efficient connection is also obtained in this way between each end and the connecting rod body.
In the drawing we also see at 17 an external hooping obtained by tight winding step by step of a strip of preimpregnated fibers. This hooping improves resistance to the effects of perforation of projectiles.
It goes without saying that the embodiments described have been given only by way of example and that they could be modified, in particular by substitution of technical equivalents, without going beyond the scope for this. of the present invention.
