<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=6.1>
<EMI ID=7.1>
<EMI ID=8.1>
<EMI ID=9.1>
<EMI ID=10.1>
<EMI ID=11.1>
<EMI ID=12.1>

The present invention relates to a microbicidal synergist, to a method for combating microorganisms and for protecting organic and inorganic materials and objects from microorganisms as well as to a method for disinfecting a microorganism. washable material and to protect the washable way against invasion by microorganisms.
We know from the descriptions of the EUA patents
<EMI ID = 1.1>
halogenated compounds are suitable for combating microorganisms such as bacteria and phytopathogenic fungi. Similar agents are known from German application DOS 2 351 386. It is also known from the description of US Pat. No. 3,616,256 that halogenated o-hydroxydiphenylethers have no action against pseudomonas.
This ineffectiveness with respect to pseudomonas must be considered as a significant drawback of halogenated o-hydroxydiphenylethers which can also be used as remarkable microbicidal agents. Significant efforts have already been made to fill this important gap in the microbicidal spectrum of these compounds. Thus, the mentioned German application proposes a mixture consisting of halogenated o-hydroxydiphenylethers and of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and its salts, which can be added to various preparations.
The Applicant has now surprisingly discovered that halogenated o-hydroxydiphenylethers of formula
<EMI ID = 2.1>
in which
X represents halogen, in particular chlorine or bromine, or a. methyl, methoxy or hydroxyl group, Y represents hydrogen or a methyl or trifluorome group
thyle,
Hal represents halogen, in particular chlorine or bromine, and
<EMI ID = 3.1>
have a remarkable bactericidal action even against
<EMI ID = 4.1>
anionic solubilizing sioactive. The object of the invention therefore consists of microbicidal agents containing a diphenyl ether of formula (I) and a solubilizing surfactant. anionic.
The microbicidal synergists of the invention consist of a halogenated o-hydroxydiphenyl ether of formula (I) and of a belonging anionic surfactant. to the groups of alkylsulphonates, alkylsulphates, triaminealkylsulphates, alkynaphthalenesulphonates and dialkylsulphosuccinates, the diphenyl ether: anionic surfactant in the mixture being
from 1: 2 to 1:30, and optionally with a solvent, preferably water.
Agents which contain, as diphenyl ether of formula (I), a diphenyl ether of formula
<EMI ID = 5.1>
in which Hal and m have the meaning indicated in formula (I), are characterized by a particularly good activity.
In the context of formula (II), the diphenylethers of formula
<EMI ID = 6.1>
in which X 'represents hydrogen or chlorine, are particularly preferred.
The surfactants found in
the agents of the invention can be pure compounds or else also common mixtures, available commercially.
The alkanesulfonates are preferably considered secondary alkanesulfonates comprising 8 to 24, for example.
<EMI ID = 7.1>
Alkyl sulphates, also called fatty alcohol sulphates, preferably have a chain length of 8 to 24, in particular -10 to 18 carbon atoms, such as for example
<EMI ID = 8.1>
carbon atoms.
The alkyl groups of the dialkylsulfosuccinates preferably have chain lengths of 4 to 12, especially 6 to 9 carbon atoms.
Considered above all as a solvent optionally present in addition to the active substance and the surfactant in the agents of the invention, water, but also alcohols, in particular lower alcohols comprising a function
<EMI ID = 9.1>
ethanol. It is also possible to use other common solvents in which the active substance and the surfactant are soluble and which do not adversely influence the effect.
- of synergy ..
When a solvent is used, and in particular water, the concentrations of active substance of formula (I) are between 20 and 50,000 ppm and preferably between 100 and 10,000 ppm.
The active substance / surfactant ratio is
is between 1: 2 and 1:30, preferably between 1: 2 and 1:10 and depends on the surfactant used. This is how when
<EMI ID = 10.1>
preferably between 1: 2 and 1:20 and dialkylsulfosuccinates preferably between 1: 3 and 1:10.
If the agent according to the invention also contains water, the preferred concentrations of active substance for the respective mixtures are, for an active substance ratio:
<EMI ID = 11.1>
<EMI ID = 12.1>
The agents according to the invention are generally in the form of pastes or colorless to slightly yellowish liquids. They are characterized by low toxicity with respect to homeotherms and do not cause irritation to the eyes and the skin at the concentrations considered. They are primarily active against bacteria but they also exhibit a fungicidal action during an in vitro test. The bactericidal action extends to both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, for example on staphylo-
<EMI ID = 13.1>
mesentericus, Sarcina spec., on coliforms such as Escherichia coli 96 and on. other gram-negative organisms
and most particularly on pseudomonas, for example Pseudomonas aeruginosa: -.
According to the present invention, the agents of the invention are used to fight against microorganisms which are found on organic and mineral materials and to protect
the latter against invasion by microorganisms.
agents of the invention can thus be used
<EMI ID = 14.1>
medical equipment, hospital linen and for the disinfection of the most diverse objects belonging, for example, to the field of medicine. It is possible to disinfect using the. agents of the invention various surfaces, consisting for example- <EMI ID = 15.1>
painting, among other things. Floor coverings, carpets, walls and team items are then mentioned.
<EMI ID = 16.1> Since the skin supports them in a remarkable way, the agents of the invention are also used for the disinfection of the skin, in particular for the hygiene of the hands.
The agents of the invention, which contain water as a solvent, must be given particular importance with regard to the disinfection of washable materials and the protection thereof against invasion by microorganisms.
Considered above all as washable materials capable of being disinfected using the agents.de invention, organic fibrous materials, of natural origin in particular, such as containing cellulose, for example cotton, or else containing polypeptides, for example wool or silk, or else fibrous materials of synthetic origin such as those consisting of polyamide, polyacrylonitrile or polyester, or else mixtures of the fibers mentioned above.
The agents of the invention confer, on the washable materials treated with them, a very developed aseptization against the forms of staphylococcus, coli and pseudomonas. A particular advantage of the agents of the invention is that the disinfection, even with regard to pseudomonas, can be carried out at low temperatures and under mild conditions, which do not require any addition of other harmful or harmful materials. to the environment.
The agents of the invention are also very effective against bacterial flora which generate perspiration odors and are for this reason and for this reason. of their low toxicity, suitable as deodorizing agents for laundry and cosmetic products.
The following are considered as o-hydroxydiphenylethers which can be used in the agents of the invention:

The present invention is illustrated by the following non-limiting examples. Percentage data represents, without further indication, percentages by weight.
A. Determination of bactericidal action
The destructive effect of the mixtures of the invention is determined during a suspension test. We prepare

ether in proportions of between 1: 2 and 1:30 and dissolved in water so as to give rise to base solutions which contain 2,4,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxydiphenyl ether in one concentration of 5 - 20%. Fractions of these base solutions are then further diluted with water in order to obtain
<EMI ID = 20.1>
2'-hydroxydiphenylether. Then added to each fraction of 5 ml of the solutions obtained, a suspension which contains per ml
<EMI ID = 21.1>
solid which contains an asphyxiant (eg polyoxyethylenesorbitan monooleate). The number of germs still alive is determined.
In table 1 are gathered for what per ml
mixtures, the number of germs / obtained after 15 seconds,
15 minutes, 1 and 4 hours.
In Tables 2 to 7, for some 2,4,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxydiphenyl ether / surfactant mixtures, the corresponding times (in hours) necessary to obtain total destruction of the pseudomonas germs have been shown.
When these experiments are carried out with 2,4,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxydiphenyl ether without adding the appropriate surfactants, no destruction of the pseudomonas is observed.
