"Synthetic vascular graft and method of making same".
The present invention relates to synthetic vascular grafts.
In particular, the present invention relates to tubes suitable for replacing human arteries as well as the process for manufacturing such tubes.
Thus, the present invention relates to a tubular graft for surgical application.
Synthetic vascular prostheses are commonly known as vascular grafts or artificial arteries. Synthetic vascular grafts used
at the beginning had a woven structure and were made from different :. types of synthetic materials. Over the years, it has been found that polyester fiber, more specifically. that of the company Du Pont de Nemours "type 56", was the most appropriate for this purpose.

Consequently, a first object of the invention consists in providing an article and a process for the manufacture thereof, which avoid the aforementioned drawbacks.
More particularly, an object of the invention consists in obtaining an article and in developing a method for the manufacture thereof, which article has a sufficiently large porosity to obtain the characteristics. . optimal tissue growth, at the same time as it allows sufficient control of porosity to prevent hemorrhage, especially at the time of implantation.
In addition, one aim of the invention is to obtain a product which, upon saturation, is not subject to an <EMI ID = 3.1>
Still another object of the present invention is an article and a method allowing the introduction of a minimum of foreign material into the human body, which material is at the same time capable of being well tolerated and in fact of becoming a substance. integral part of human tissue.
According to the invention, the synthetic vascular graft is in the form of a tube of low denier polyester fiber, which is warp knitted and has sufficient porosity to achieve optimum tissue growth characteristics. , while providing sufficient porosity control to prevent bleeding at the time of implantation. In accordance with the method of the invention, this tube is warp knitted, which is achieved using a double needle bar Raschel knitting machine, preferably with a knit stitch, although it may also be advantageous to use a lock stitch.
The invention is further illustrated by the accompanying drawings.
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a knitted tube according to the invention, before its shaping by corrugation. Figure 2 shows the tube of Figure 1, after its shaping by corrugation.
Figure, 3 is a cross-sectional view of
the structure of Figure 1, this view being taken along line 3-3 of Figure 1, in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view of the structure of Figure 2, this view being taken along line 4-4 of Figure 2 in the direction of the arrows. Figure 5 is a fragmentary illustration of the corrugated structure of Figure 2, showing this structure
on an enlarged scale compared to the scale in figure 2.
FIG. 6 is a schematic representation of part of a knit stitch pan. Figure 6a is a view of a fragmentary stitch diagram, on paper, of the knitted structure of Figure 6. Figure 7- is a schematic illustration of a lockstitch knitted structure. Figure 7a is a fragmentary view of a stitch diagram, on paper, of the lockstitch knitted structure of Figure 7. Figure 8 is a cross-sectional, schematic, fragmentary view taken along line 8 -8 of Figure 6, in the direction of the arrows, this figure showing the rib formations involved by the knitted structure of Figure 6.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 shows a vascular graft 10 according to the invention in the state in which it is when knitting has been performed but before setting.

of a small number of deniers has proved to be the most satisfactory. Thus, polyester fiber manufactured by Du Pont, type 56, sometimes known as Dacron type, is preferred.
56, this yarn being 30 denier, since it has been proven that
the latter thread was the most compatible with human tissue.
According to the invention, the yarn is warp knitted with precisely controlled tightening, since it
It was found that, quite surprisingly, this particular type of knitted structure gives the best vascular graft <EMI ID = 5.1>
possible from all points of view, as will appear from the following description.
Thus, the vascular graft 10 shown in Figure 1, as it comes from the knitting machine, is subjected to well-known wave shaping operations in order to obtain the finished product 12 shown in Figure 2. It will be noted that the product 10 has, at one of its ends, an enlarged tubular part 14 which becomes the corrugated part 16 of the product 12, while, at its other end, the product 10 comprises the branches 18a and 18b which respectively become the branches 20a and 20b of the finished corrugated article. In this way, the product has a configura- <EMI ID = 6.1>
16 to be connected to, the aorta while the branches 20a and
20b of smaller diameter can be connected to the iliac arteries.
As can be seen in Figure 3, the object 10, in its tubular part 14, consists of a relatively large flat tube, while after the corrugation shaping, the article 10 assumes the state circular illustrated by Figure 4, the latter showing the enlarged portion 16 of the finished article 12. The turns or corrugations 22 of the part 16 and the turns or corrugations 24a and 24b of the branches 20a and 20b are shown more clearly by the Figure. 5, of which
it appears that with this construction the vascular graft can freely be stretched longitudinally in all its parts.
As mentioned above, the warp knitting is carried out, according to the present invention, on the Raschel machine with a fine gauge, to give the vascular graft blank according to the invention. This warp knitting is preferably carried out with knitting stitches, some of which are illustrated in Figure 6. Thus the knitting which is produced is a two-ply loop knit, comprising certain front and rear loops. back loops
28 being shown separately to the right of Fig. 6, where they are shown with hatching, while the front loops do not have hatching and are shown separately on the left side of Fig. 6. The knitting, in its state as knitted, is represented by the middle of the Fi-

proved to be the most appropriate. Figure 6a shows a fragment of a stitch diagram, on paper, of the knitted structure of figure 6, the left part of figure 6a showing the knitting which takes place at the front guide bar, while the right part of Figure 6a shows the knitting that is done at the rear guide bar.
Although knitting stitches are preferred, it
knotted
It is also possible to use stitches / and FIG. 7 schematically illustrates a warp knitted fabric, comprising lock stitches. Also in this case, the knitting is two-strand knitted loops, the knitting has front loops and back loops. The rear loops 32 are shown separately to the right of Figure 7; while the front loops 34 are shown alone on the left side
of Figure 7. The knitting, in its as-knitted state, is illustrated by the middle area of Figure 7. Figure 7a is
again a fragment of a stitch diagram, on paper, showing, on the left, the bar knitting operations
guide to obtain the knitted structure of figure 7 and, on the right, the knitting operations with the rear guide bar to obtain the fabric of figure 7. In this case also, figures 7 and 7a illustrate a structure with Well-known and classic type tie-stitches.
It should be noted that the knitted structure of the invention has ribs on the outside, when it is initially withdrawn from the knitting machine. In other words, on the outside, the knitted structure has sides extending longitudinally, while on the inside, this structure has a relatively smooth surface. According to another characteristic of the invention, the entire structure is turned over after the knitting operations, so as to obtain a structure as illustrated schematically by FIG. 8. This structure shows that the knitted wall <EMI ID = 8.1>
ment united and an inner surface which has the sides 38 extending longitudinally. The advantages resulting from this particular characteristic. of the invention are a tendency towards uniformity of stresses and contraction of the fabric or knit, the blood being channeled along longitudinal paths creating a well-established flow pattern. The articles of the invention can be warp knitted with a fine denier polyester fiber, according to the method of the invention, and this over a wide range of sizes. Warp knitting is carried out in such a way that it is possible
to maintain careful control of the formation of spots so as to obtain a product of standard porosity and uniform throughout its structure. The warp knitting is carried out in such a way that the formation of the stitches can only proceed from a warp knitting and not from a circular knitting. The stitch is of an entanglement resistant type. The warp-knitted structure, which is removed from the knitting machine, is chemically treated so as to allow the stitches or stitches to be compacted. Then, the medium is shaped to give the corrugations or spiies illustrated more particularly by FIG. 5. It results from this characteristic that the tube can be bent very easily and it should be noted that the tubular structure can be transformed into a graft. vascular harmless.
The resulting product has been found to be particularly suitable for surgical applications and, more particularly, for repairs or replacements of defective human arteries.
The synthetic vascular graft made of a fine denier polyester fiber, warp knitted according to the invention, is therefore manufactured so as to possess sufficient porosity to ensure optimum tissue growth characteristics, while at the same time ensuring sufficient porosity control to prevent hemorrhage at the time of implantation. When suturing, the product does not unravel or tangle. This product is thin-walled and therefore uses the minimum amount of substances foreign to the body. This product is well tolerated in the human body of which it becomes an integral part. The
yarns which are used in the product, having the foregoing characteristics, may be of a non-twisted type or
of a textured type, of a stretched type or of a bulky type.
The resulting fabric possesses the most desirable mechanical handling properties, far superior to those of any other fabrics known today. The product of the invention has all the optimum characteristics required for a vascular graft. It should be noted that there is no particular restriction as to the diameters that the articles in question may take.
<EMI ID = 9.1> this diameter can be relatively large or extremely small.
