<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>

"Method for taking samples in areas without
cohesion and device for the implementation of this method ".
The present invention relates to a method for
the taking, in depth and at the bottom of a boring, of samples
undisturbed (dry) in loose soils, particularly in sandy or liminous soils.
For taking such samples, the technique
! currently used consists in driving into the ground, at the bottom of a boring, a mincp- tube at a well-determined speed, the end of the thin tube being of slightly decreasing section
so that, by the consistency of the ground, the cut core is held in said tube. This procedure has the drawback that, when the soil from which it is desired to take a sample does not have sufficient consistency and
is for example muddy, it is not possible to bring said sample to the surface because the core formed in the tube escapes during the rise of the latter.
The object of the present invention is to remedy this drawback and to provide a method which makes it possible, whatever the consistency of the soil from which samples are taken, to bring back to the surface of the soil a core as it was taken from the bottom of the soil. survey.
To this end, according to the invention, said method consists in driving a core barrel into the ground to form the core constituting the soil sample to be taken, in cooling the lower end of the core barrel, in the depressed position, to form,
at the base of the core, a plug of frozen ground making it possible to immobilize the core in the corer, to keep the corer in this position until the moment when the plug is formed,
to reassemble the corer and recover the core maintained intact by the plug of frozen ground.
The invention also relates to a device
for the implementation of the aforesaid method.
According to the invention, said device comprises an <EMI ID = 1.1>
that the outer tube cuts the core and so that the inner tube receives the latter, mounted at the end and in the extension of the probing rods ensuring the movements of the core barrel in the soil, refrigeration means placed in the core barrel near the end of the outer tube cutting the core, a reserve of pressurized refrigerant, a valve for expanding the refrigerant, a valve and means for controlling said valve to admit the agent to the valve and a distribution system of said refrigerating agent connecting the valve to the aforesaid refrigerating means and arranged between the two tubes of the corer.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the two tubes of the corer are movable relative to each other along their axis, the inner tube being fixed to the probing rods while the outer tube is mounted on the tube. interior by means of an anchoring system which can occupy two positions, a first position in which the two tubes are fixed relative to each other for driving the core barrel into the ground and a second position in which the outer tube can slide on the inner tube in the direction opposite to the descent of the corer when it reaches the desired depth, the two tubes being arranged, on the one hand, so that, in the first position of the anchoring system ,
the end of the outer tube cutting the core is located at a level lower than that of the corresponding end of the inner tube, the refrigeration means, fixed to the inner tube on the periphery of the latter, extending between these ends up to proximity to the end of the outer tube and, on the other hand, so that, in the second position of the anchoring system, the outer tube can slide on the inner tube by a distance substantially equal to the distance between the two ends aforesaid so that said refrigerating means can protrude from the end of the outer tube, means being provided to bring the anchoring system from its first to its second position.
According to a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, the refrigeration means are constituted by flexible tubes in which the refrigerant is admitted, these tubes being arranged substantially parallel to the axis of the core barrel and regularly distributed around the periphery of the tube. inside the latter.
Other details and features of the invention will emerge from the description of the drawings appended hereto, these drawings illustrating the aforesaid method and showing, by way of nonlimiting example, a particular embodiment of the device according to the invention.
FIG. 1 is an elevational view, in section and with partial breakages, of the device according to the invention shown during the formation of the core, at the bottom of a borehole. FIG. 2 is a view similar to FIG. 1 showing the device after formation of the core, the elements which constitute it being shown in the position which they occupy to bring the core back to the surface of the ground.
In the various figures, the same reference notations designate identical or similar elements.
According to the invention and as illustrated in the drawings, the method for taking a sample consists of driving into the ground,
<EMI ID = 2.1> constituting the ground sample to be taken, to cool the lower end 4 of the corer 2, when it is pressed into
the ground of a distance such that the core 3 is formed, to constitute, at the base 5 of the core 3 (see figure 2) a plug 6 of frozen ground making it possible to immobilize the core 3 in the core barrel, to maintain this last motionless until the plug 6 is formed, to raise the corer and finally recover the core 3 kept intact in the latter by the plug 6 of ground solidified by the gel.
According to the invention, the device 7 for implementing the aforesaid method is mounted at the end and in the extension of probing rods 8 ensuring the movements of the corer and comprises, as shown in the drawings, a double corer 2 consisting of two coaxial tubes 9 and 10, arranged so that the outer tube 9 cuts the core 3 when the core barrel is driven into the ground and so that the inner tube 10 receives said core, refrigerating means 11 arranged in the core barrel near to the end 20 of the tube 9, a reserve of refrigerant 12 under pressure, an expansion valve 13 for the refrigerant, a valve 14 and control means 15 of the latter to admit the refrigerant to the valve 13
and a distribution system 16 of the refrigerant which connects the valve 13 to the refrigerating means 11 and which is arranged between the two tubes 9 and 10 of the core barrel 2. These two tubes 9 and
10 of the corer can slide relative to each other along their axis, the tube 10 being fixed to the probing rods 8 by means of the reserve of refrigerant 12, contained in a cylinder 17 of substantially equal section to that of the corer 2.
The outer tube 10 is mounted on the tube 9 by means of an anchoring system 18 which can occupy two positions, a first position (figure 1) in which the tubes 9 and 10 are fixed one with respect to the '' another for driving the core barrel into the ground and a second position in which the tube 9 can slide on the tube 10, following arrow 19, in the direction opposite to the descent of the core barrel 2 when the latter is driven into the ground to the desired depth. The tubes 9 and 10 are arranged, on the one hand, so that, in the first position of the anchoring system, the end 20 of the outer tube 9 is located at a level lower than that of the corresponding end 21 of the
<EMI ID = 3.1>
interior 10 on the periphery of the latter, extending between these ends 20 and 21 to the vicinity of the end 20 of the tube
9 and, on the other hand, so that, in the second position of the anchoring system, the outer tube 9 can slide on the inner tube 10 by a distance substantially equal to the distance separating the two ends 20 and 21 so that the refrigeration means 11 can project from the end of the outer tube
10, means being provided to bring the anchoring system from
<EMI ID = 4.1>
formed by flexible hollow tubes or blades 22 into which the refrigerant is admitted, these tubes or blades being arranged substantially parallel to the axis of the core barrel 2 and regularly distributed around the periphery of the inner tube of the latter. the end 20 of the tube 9 of the corer having, at 23, a frustoconical shape whose angle 24 is chosen so that, when the tube 9 slides on the tube 10, the flexible tubes 22 converge on the axis of the corer to enclose the core 3 in the tube 10. The distribution system 16 of the refrigerant of the reserve 12, contained in the cylinder 17, to the flexible tubes 22 com-takes pipes 25 attached to the inner tube 10 and each leading to on the one hand, to a tube 22 and, on the other hand, to an annular chamber 26 supplied with refrigerant from
of the expansion valve 13, the latter being in turn supplied with pressurized refrigerant from the reserve of agent through the valve 14, arranged at the upper part of the cylinder 17 and controlled by a control rod 27, allowing the passage of the pressurized agent, through a conduit 28 housed in the cylinder 17 to the expansion valve 13 of the refrigerant which is housed on the corer 2, at the base of the cylinder
17. To prevent the refrigerant from cooling the ground surrounding the outer tube of the corer, insulating means, not shown, are arranged on the inner face of the outer tube 9, in the zone where the latter can be influenced by the 'refrigerant circulating in pipes 25 and tubes
22. The anchoring system 18 comprises a ring 29 fixed to the outer face of the inner tube 10 of the core barrel 2 and having a projection 30 intended to cooperate with a notch 31, formed on
the inner face of the outer tube 9 of said core barrel, for, when this projection 30 is engaged in the notch 31, immobilize the outer tube 9 relative to the inner tube 10 and for, when the projection 30 is released from the notch 31 in rotating the inner tube 10 attached to the sounding rods 8 through the cylinder 17, freeing the outer tube 9 so that it can
<EMI ID = 5.1>
22 towards the axis of the core barrel to trap the core 3 in the inner tube 10. The protrusion 30 is released from the notch 31 by rotating the device, thanks to the probing rods 8, around its axis, when the outer tube 9 of the ca- <EMI ID = 6.1>
been embedded in this one. The inner tube 10 of the corer 2 is closed at its end 32 and is provided, near this end, with a discharge valve 33 allowing the fluid contained in the inner tube of the corer to escape to the outside of the corer.
It should be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the embodiment described and that many modifications can be made to the latter without departing from the scope of the present patent.
Thus, for taking samples in muddy soils which would not have sufficient strength to ensure the immobilization of the corer 2 for the release of the projection 30 of the notch 31 allowing the release of the outer tube 9 so that it can slide on the inner tube 10, one could in particular provide control means arranged along the probing rods 8 supporting the core barrel 2 and arranged, on the one hand, to be actuated at the surface and, on the other hand hand, to release the projection 30 from the notch
31 and ensure the sliding of the tube 9 on the tube 10 to make the tubes 22 converge towards the axis of the corer and trap
carrot 3 in tube 10.
