New dienyl ethers of formula (I):- (where R1 and R2 are H or 1-20C hydrocarbon gp., or opt. form alone or together, an aliphatic or aromatic ring; R3 is 1-10C opt. unsatd. aromatic, alicyclic or aliphatic hydrocarbon gp.; R4-7 are H or 1-10C hydrocarbon gp.; R8 is H or 1-45C hydrocarbon gp.; R4 with R6 or R7, or R7 with R6 or R8, may opt. form an alicyclic ring or heterocyclic ring with a non-reactive heteroatom) are pref. used to prepare unsatd. carbonyl cpds. (II) by heating. Cpds. (I) may be prepd. from the allylacetals by removal of an alcohol or carboxylic acid.
