Abstract

Improved refractory coating for steel making furnace operating in severe conditions can be produced by using clay-based materials with higher Al2O3 content thus normally present in naturally occurring materials. They also incorporate 0.5-5% alkali and 0.05-1% FeS as fluxes. The mixt. contains =70% Al2O3 and is pre-baked so that no further heat treatment is required after the shaping of the refractories.

Description

 <EMI ID=1.1>

 <EMI ID=2.1>

- de la présence d'alcalis dans une proportion comprise entre 0,5 % et 5 % et de préférence entre 1 % et 2 %;

  The present invention relates to refractory materials, of the type of those mentioned in Belgian patent application 6 / 44,520 filed on March 26.
1974 in the name of the same plaintiff.

In this patent application, an improvement is made in the resistance of the internal coatings of steel mill pockets subjected to particularly severe operating conditions, for example those encountered in continuous casting installations. and / or vacuum treatment.

containers for metallurgical use and more especially steel mill pockets ".

This improvement is obtained by making use of a refractory material composed of clay, of at least one "swelling" agent, the proportion of alumina in the

 <EMI ID = 2.1>

. Particular modalities of the composition of the refractories mentioned in the said request state:
- the presence of alkalis in a proportion of between 0.5% and 5% and preferably between 1% and 2%;
- the presence of pyrite and / or FeS in proportions such that the S content is between 0.05% and 1%.

The present improvement also relates to such refractory materials, but these are characterized by being produced by synthesis, from their main constituents, namely clay, at least

a swelling agent within the meaning of the main patent application, and optionally additional alumina.

The present improvement is therefore essentially characterized in that the refractory materials intended in particular for the constitution of the internal linings of steelworks pockets are made from a mixture of their main constituent elements, namely clay, at least one "swelling element", these comprising for example pyrite and / or FeS, as well as fluxing elements, such as alkalis, in a proportion such that the overall content of the refractory in these elements is between 0.25% and 5% and preferably between 1% and 2%.

According to an advantageous form of the invention, the mixture comprises alumina or a compound richer in alumina than natural clays, said compound being fired beforehand, all so as to increase the content of said mixture of alumina, without however exceed 70%. By this expression “pre-cooked” is meant that this compound has been packaged so that it no longer has to undergo treatment after the refractories have been shaped. It must in fact be taken into account that, the cooking of this compound, if it were carried out after its Incorporation into the mixture, would require a temperature so high that the gases coming from the blowing agents would be released as soon as this cooking was done, which would prevent them from subsequently fulfill their function of "bulking".
