Abstract

Firstly a lump of low viscosity glass is placed into a porous material support having the desired finished outline through which gas is passed so as to make the glass float in it, balanced in such a way that through the interplay of gravity, surface tension of the glass, and the gas forces, the glass lump adopts the shape of the support. After its surface has cooled sufficiently to permit direct contact with die walls without sustaining damage it is subjected to forming in a die. The support pref. consists of sintered stainless steel, graphite or Si-carbide and the gas is pref. N with 5% H2. The system permits the simple cheap and fast prodn. of accurate dimension high surface finish glass parts.
