Abstract

A copolymer is prepd by simultaneously adding an epoxide and a lactone to an initiator contg. an active H which can open the lactone or epoxy ring in the presence of an acid catalyst, the speed of addn being such that excessive accumulation of lactone and epoxide in the reaction system is prevented. Formation of block copolymers is obviated and the copolymer formed has a lower m.pt. than similar prods. prepd. by other methods. Liquid copolymers can therefore be produced for use as plasticisers for PVC and in polymethanes prodn.
