Novel title cpds. of formula:- (where R = 1-4C alkyl, Q = -COOH, -COOR1 or -COOM, R1 = 1-4C alkyl, M = alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, Cu, Fe, Zn, Co, Ni or ammonium (opt. substd. by 1-4C alkyl gps.), X = halo and Y = H or 1-4C alkyl) and their acid addn. salts are prepd. by oxidn. of the corresponding 2-alkyl or 2-hydroxymethyl pyridine with alkaline KMnO4.
