Abstract
diol is produced selectively, in high yield by hydrogenating gamma alpha-butyrolactone (prepd. by hydrogenating maleic anhydride) in the presence of a copper oxide-chromium oxide catalyst at elevated pressure (pref. 100-250 kg/cm2) in the liquid phase at 120-230 degrees C, pref. 180-230 degrees C, while maintaining the quantity of succinic anhydride and succinic acid in the gamma alpha-butyrolactone at 0.05 wt. % and the water content at 1wt. % catalyst activity is practically unreduced on repeated use, and product which is free of monocarboxylic acid can be purified by simple distillation.
