<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Cast iron refining process with bottom blowing.
To increase the service life of converter heads used with oxygen blowing from the bottom, it has already been recommended to use nozzles made up of two concentric cylindrical tubes with oxygen blowing through the central duct and dissociation fluid. endothermic - for example hydrocarbons - through the peripheral duct.
When the central duct is formed by a pipe made of a metal of high Iberian conductivity such as copper, however, the formation of clusters of metallic and / or scorifying and / or refractory materials is frequently observed, which

deposit near the orifice of the external duct of the double nozzle. These clusters can develop until partially blocking this pipe, this mistletoe entails'. difficulties in blowing the fluid.
The research carried out by the applicant has made it possible to demonstrate the influence, on the formation of said clusters, of the calorific conductivity of the metal constituting the internal duct of the nozzle. Consequently, to reduce the risk of blocking deposits, it has been recommended to use ducts made in various ways, tending to adapt the heat transmission capacity of the central duct to the blowing conditions.
The various solutions proposed, however, consist in the use of special pipes. On the other hand, the refining process which is the subject of the present invention is applicable whatever the nature of the pipes and it can be implemented, in particular in the case where the inner pipe is made of copper.
The object of the present invention is a process which makes it possible to avoid the drawbacks due to the possible formation of metallic deposits at the orifice of the pipe for the endothermic reaction fluid.
The process of refining cast iron in a converter, the bottom of which is provided with nozzles made up of two concentric tubes, the central duct of which is used for the blowing of oxygen and the other for the introduction of a fluid to endothermic dissociation, object of the present invention, is essentially characterized in that the pressure of the fluid with endothermic dissociation blown into the bath is measured and in that, in the event of an increase in this pressure relative to a set value , a neutral gas is mixed with this endothermically dissociating fluid in an amount suitable for the measured pressure increase.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
This addition of neutral gas has the effect of reducing the cooling due to the dissociation of the fluid, the total flow rate in the peripheral duct preferably remaining constant; the consequence of the reduction in this cooling effect is that the temperature at the outlet of the concentric nozzles increases until it reaches the melting temperature of the deposits observed.
It does not depart from the scope of the invention to carry out the pressure measurements continuously or intermittently. The advantage of continuous measurement is that it is possible to automatically control the insufflation of the neutral gas to the pressure variations of the endothermic reaction fluid. Thus, for example, the systematic reduction in the addition of neutral gas is obtained when the pressure of the gas mixture in the peripheral duct decreases due to the gradual disappearance of the obturator clusters.
This way of acting - limits the excess temperature at the outlet of the nozzles, which is favorable to the conservation of the refractories at the bottom of the converter .---
According to the invention, the pressure in the peripheral conduits can be measured individually using a manometer connected to each nozzle; under these conditions, it is useful to install an also individual device for the introduction of. neutral gas in the nozzle in question. It is also possible to measure the pressure in the distribution pipes connecting the main supply line for endothermically dissociating fluid to the groups of peripheral nozzles.
By virtue of the method of carrying out the refining which is the subject of the invention, the use of expensive materials for the manufacture of the central ducts of the concentric nozzles is avoided, while ensuring continuous, and thereby optimum, monitoring of the progress of the nozzles. phenomena at the outlet of the nozzles in question.
