<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Method and device for controlling the. step of a blast furnace.
The present invention relates to a method and to a device for controlling the operation of a blast furnace, particularly advantageous in that they allow a visual examination of the load and of the interior walls of the blast furnace.
Knowing the state of the charge of a blast furnace as it descends from its charging at the top is increasingly important for controlling the operation of the furnace.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and ensure the production of a cast iron of a given composition under optimal operating conditions :.
The new methods * of automatic regulation. modern blast furnaces are also based on such knowledge and the results obtained are as much better as this more in-depth knowledge.
For this purpose, a very large number of measurements are carried out, such as for example gas analysis at the top, determination and examination of the upper level of the charge, horizontal soundings to check the distribution of gases at different levels, combustion. with nozzles, analysis of the cast iron produced, etc.
However, it has not yet been possible to determine the state of part of the load located anywhere below its upper surface or to record its path.
The object of the present invention is a process which makes it possible to achieve such an objective. Other advantages of the present invention will become apparent on reading the description given below.
The method, which is the subject of the present invention, is essentially characterized in that a mobile probe is introduced into the charge of the blast furnace, comprising a receiving apparatus composed of at least one television camera sensitive to the optical rays emitted. and / or an apparatus for emitting optical rays, in that the said optical rays are directed towards the part of the load or of the oven that is to be examined, in that the rays retransmitted by said part, which makes it possible to obtain a representative image and to deduce the desired characteristics.
It should be noted that the expression “optical rays” should be understood to mean rays whose wavelength is between 0.12 and 40 microns.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
According to the invention, the receiving apparatus is fitted to a focal optical system, such as for example a lens, and the focusing of the image in the plane of the sensitive surface of the television camera is ensured. either by moving said camera inside the probe, or by using

of an objectii = name.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the wide angle device is used when it is desired to examine a large area.
According to another advantageous form of the invention, the telephoto device is used when one wants to examine a very small surface and follow its movement,
The optical rays emitted can consist of visible light or infra-red rays, the latter being particularly advantageous in the case of temperature measurement.
Also according to the invention, it is advantageous to emit visible or infra-red light rays modulated periodically with the aim of enabling the receiving apparatus to distinguish between the rays emitted by the load and those coming from the load. emitting device.
According to a variant of the invention, laser or maser radiation is emitted because of their high intensity. their coherence, which makes it possible to clearly distinguish them from other radiations and to facilitate their focusing.
In addition to temperature measurement, the process also makes it possible to carry out gas analyzes and pressure measurements.
Among the materials constituting the charge, it is obviously possible to examine more particularly coke or ore or else fluxes.

be arranged vertically or horizontally or inclined between these two extreme positions. The same. it can be introduced along the axis of the furnace or off-center or even along the walls depending on the desired goal.
In order to protect the outer wall. of the probe against the heat, a cooling water circuit is established inside said wall.

Likewise, to protect the switchgear and receiver against heat, a cooling air circuit is established in the central duct of the probe where they are connected.
Finally, to protect the focal optical system associated with the receiving equipment also against heat as well as to ensure at least partial-
