<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
l'exemple de la fig. 5.
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

BELGIAN PATENT Device for carrying out chemical reactions in a stream of gaseous reactants.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention relates to apparatus for carrying out chemical reactions in a stream of gaseous reactants and, essentially, for the combustion of the constituents entering into the composition of gas mixtures with low calorific value, in particular for gas turbine units.
Devices are already known for the combustion of the constituents entering into the composition of gas mixtures with low calorific value. These devices are based on one of the following gentle principles: raising the temperature level of combustion (we know that the temperature level has a very strong influence on the speed of most chemical reactions) or the use of catalysts.
As an example of a known device operating according to the principle of raising the temperature level, there may be mentioned the combustion chamber of a gas turbine unit using the methane which is given off in coal mines. Said chamber, intended to burn methane mixed with the ventilation air of coal mines, constitutes a fixed recuperator with ceramic filling body comprising two columns with mushroom-shaped bypass valves, fitted with a pneumatic control at the ends. , low temperature side of the columns and a junction reaction chamber at the ends of the columns, high temperature side.
The chamber operates as follows. The mixture of methane and air passes through the appropriate clapat, goes to the bottom of the column and, as it rises, takes the heat from the ceramic fillers. On leaving the column, the temperature rises to the required level and the methane undergoes intensive oxidation. This oxidation ends in the reaction chamber. Then the hot gas des-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
ash by another column, giving up its heat to the ceramic filling bodies; after a lapse of time, one of the columns is cooled with cold gas while the other column is heated with hot gas. At a certain moment, the direction of flow is reversed by the reversal of the valves and the cycle is repeated.
The chamber which has just been described exhibits a large number of drawbacks due essentially to two construction features: the use of a fixed recuperator operating in cycles and the present of a separate reaction chamber. The periodic reversals of the direction of gas flow make it necessary to use a valve mechanism operating at high temperatures, which is unsafe and complicated in service, especially in cases where it is a question of passing large gas flows as in a gas turbine unit.
When the valves are reversed, the temperature of the gas and its flow rate change, so it is necessary to provide a gas bypass rail in which a combustion chamber of the ordinary type is inserted to regulate the temperature. of the process by admitting an additional quantity of fuel into the chamber. The methane mixed with the air which passes through this auxiliary chamber of the ordinary type (roughly half of its total flow rate) cannot be burned in this mixture and is released into the atmosphere, compromising the efficiency of the gas. use of methane from mines.
The cyclical nature of the recuperator's operation also explains the drop in the exchange coefficient between the products of combustion and the cold gas, given that this magnitude decreases as the cycle lengthens, while the valve mechanism, given the peculiarities of its construction, cannot guarantee a sufficiently short cycle time (that is to say it cannot ensure a fast
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
sufficient reversals for an extended time). The long period cycle, in turn, requires a considerable mass of heat accumulating fillers to avoid substantial changes in the temperature of the gases and the fillers during the cycle.
The use of a separate chamber contributes to considerably increase, The dimensions of the whole unit and of the heat exchange surface with the ambient medium. The structure of an apparatus having a separate chamber with a gas turbine unit is inconvenient.
The object of the present invention is to avoid the above drawbacks.
The present invention aims to provide an apparatus for carrying out chemical reactions in a stream of gaseous reactants, preferably for the combustion of the constituents of gas mixtures with low calorific value of gas turbine units, said apparatus being compact, continuous operation, easily adjustable and economical.
According to the invention the problem is solved by carrying out the heat exchanger in the apparatus for the combustion of the constituents of gas mixtures with low calorific power, in the form of a rotating recuperator comprising filling bodies. with conduits for the passage of gases.
It is advantageous to make the filling bodies of the recuperator in the form of at least one belt, the reaction chamber having to be formed by the internal surface of this belt. It is useful to orient the conduits of the belt towards the reaction chamber, preferably in the radial directions.
To better understand the invention, the latter

is illustrated by exemplary embodiments and by drawings, among which:, FIG. 1 shows the construction diagram of the apparatus according to the invention, viewed in vertical section; fig. 2 shows the apparatus in section viewed from above; fig. 3 (a, b. C) gives the examples of realization of the block of the belt of ceramic filling bodies; fig. 4 (a, b, c and d) provides examples of assembling the belt of ceramic filling bodies made up of isolated blocks; Fig.'5 is a variant of the device according to fig. 1 in the diagram of a gas turbine turbine unit;
fig. 6-a is a qualitative diagram of the evolution of the temperatures of the gases in the reaction chamber of the unit; fig. 6-b is a schematic view of the apparatus shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the apparatus for the combustion of constituents of gas mixtures with low calorific value containing an oxidizer which does not ignite under the starting conditions, is in the example considered as a gas turbine unit supplied with air aeration of mines, a heat exchanger in the form of a rotating recuperator 1.
This rotating recuperator 1 comprises the body 2 and the filling bodies with ducts 3 comprising an outer metal belt 4 and an inner ceramic belt 5.-

lement in the conduits 3 of the filling bodies) * The inner ceramic belt 5 of the filling bodies is assembled in perforated blocks 6. The blocks 6 of the ceramic belt on the back of the filling body 5, in order to prevent their mutual displacement, are compressed by air-cooled springs 7. The body 2 is provided with an outer cover 8 on which is fixed the cover 9 of the reaction chamber A.
In the lower part of the body 2 and in the outer cover 8 are provided pipes 10 and 11 for the inlet of the cooling air taken downstream of the compressor (not shown in the drawing) of the turbine unit. gas. The rotation of the recuperator 1 is carried out by means of a circular plate 12, connected by the shaft 13 to the drive mechanism (not shown in the drawing). For the arrival of the starting fuel and the auxiliary fuel (possibly necessary), injector manifolds 14 are installed. For the passage of the injector manifolds 14, the cover 9 and the insulators 15 are drilled with holes 16. The fuel is admitted to the injector manifolds 14 through the pipe 17.
The outer cover 8 is attached to the body 2 by studs 18. On the shaft 13 of the plate 12 is provided the sealing device '19. The axial sealing is achieved by flaps 20 crimped in the body 2 (or in the special ring). For the passage of the cooling air, the cover 9 of the reaction chamber A, the turntable 12 and the insulator 15 are pierced with holes 21. The arrows in FIGS. 1 and 2 represent the direction of gas flow. The letters B and C respectively indicate the arrival and departure sectors of the recuperator (similar in use to the recuperation columns of the prototype described above).

pleating. Fig. 3-a represents a block with 3 radial ccnduits and cylindrical faces. To facilitate manufacture, the axes of the conduits 3 can be made parallel as shown in fig. 3-b. We can, for the same purpose, achieve a block having flat faces (fig. 3-c). The block can be monolith or assembled from refractory tubes made integral by refractory cement.
Figs. 4-a, 4-b, 4-c and 4-d represent the possible mounting versions of the perforated ceramic blocks 6 in the belt 5. Figs. 4-a and 4-b represent the assembly diagram of the ceramic belt 5, executed according to the version of fig. 3-a and 3-b, while fig. 4-c and 4-d show schematically the assembly of the ceramic belt 5, executed according to the version of fig. 3-c. To facilitate the exchange of the blocks out of use, the latter are joined together only by mutual friction; increasing the frictional force an additional force is created by compressing the blocks with air-cooled springs 7.
Fig. 5 schematically represents a variant of the apparatus according to FIG. 1 in a turbine unit at ga z.
In this version, the recuperator 1 is housed in a casing 22 through which passes the air arriving from the compressor through the pipe 23 (the compressor is not shown in the drawing). The products of combustion exit into the turbine (not shown in the drawing) through pipe 24. The arrows indicate the direction of gas flow.
@
The principle of operation of the device (fig. 1 and 2) is illustrated by the diagram in fig. 6 (a and b). Here, the temperature of the gases has been plotted on the ordinate and the path traveled by the gases through the apparatus is abscissa. For greater clarity, there is shown schematically in FIG. 6-b
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
the apparatus of fig. 1 and 2. The direction of gas flow is indicated by arrows. The air leaving the compressor of the gas turbine unit 'arrives in the inlet sector B' of the recuperator 1 (fig. 1 and 2) and its temperature in the pipes 3 of the filling bodies rises up to at the value at which the constituents of the mixture burn rapidly (section ab of the diagram).
This temperature for poor methane / air mixtures is approximately 800 ° C. (depending on the residence time of the fuel mixture in the reaction chamber A). Combustion takes place mainly in the reaction chamber A (section bc of the diagram) and partially in the conduits 3 of the filling bodies (fig. 1 and 2). The combustion of the gases causes a further rise in the temperature of the mixture and creates a temperature drop which is essential for the operation of the exchanger. Then the combustion products arrive in the outlet sector c (section cd of fig. 6a) of the recuperator 1 (fig. 1 and 2) and, while cooling in the ducts 3 of the filling bodies (fig. 1 and 2). , raise the temperature of the latter.
The heat accumulated during this stage by the filling bodies, thanks to the continuous rotation of the recuperator 1, is transmitted to the gases which arrive in the reaction chamber A. Thus, a continuous recovery of the heat of combustion of the gases takes place. as well as auxiliary fuel.
To protect the metal against the action of high temperatures, a part of the relatively cold starting gas mixture (almost about 3% of the overall flow) bypasses the conduits 3 of the filling bodies and passes through the pipes 10 and 11 ( fig.
1 and 2) and the holes 21 directly in the reaction chamber A. The starting fuel and the auxiliary fuel (if necessary) are admitted by the re-collectors.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
water-cooled injectors 14 in the reaction chamber A. In this case, the uniform temperature field is regulated by the arrangement and the number of injectors.
The apparatus described for the combustion of the constituents of gas mixtures of low calorific value did not present the drawbacks inherent in similar apparatus with a valve recuperator and a separate reaction chamber.
The use of the revolving recuperator makes it possible to switch between the valve mechanism and a chamber of the ordinary type operating in parallel, since the heat transfer is achieved by continuously moving the heated filling bodies to the meets the flow of cold gases.
All of the air / methane mixture passes through the chamber, and the methane is used entirely. The easy regulation of the speed of rotation makes it possible to use light filling bodies and to have a high exchange coefficient, close to theoretical. The speed of rotation of the recuperator is limited only by the limit value of the mechanical transfer of the mass of the gases.
The orientation of the conduits of the filling bodies in the inner chamber of the belt of the filling bodies allows the recuperator and the reaction chamber to be integrated into a compact unit, the hottest zone, the reaction chamber, being well insulated against heat loss to the environment.
The use of the metal in sheets in the area of the filling bodies at relatively low temperature makes it possible to reduce their dimensions and to implement simple and reliable sealing devices,
The device in question can easily be integrated with other elements of a gas turbine unit as shown
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
the example of fig. 5. Thanks to the fact that in this case the recuperator is blown by a relatively cold flow, the integration process in question makes it possible to minimize heat losses and to use inexpensive ordinary steel as the material. for the body.
The concrete execution of the chamber lends itself to the rotation of the body or certain parts of the body relative to the fixed filling bodies. In this case, all the acquired advantages are retained.
In some cases, to obtain the required gas temperature at the. out of the device or to create a drop in temperature, it may be necessary to inject an auxiliary fuel. This fuel can be admitted directly into the reaction chamber.
The apparatus in question can be used not only as a combustion chamber for a gas turbine unit using the methane contained in the aeration air of mines, but also for the combustion of constituents of any gas mixture which does not ignite. under the initial conditions and containing an oxidizer. As an example, the use of the device in question for the. combustion of harmful materials contained in the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines, in the residual gases of furnaces, of chemical industry devices, etc.
The reheating * of the cold apparatus can be carried out not only by admitting fuel into the reaction chamber, but by any other method, in particular by admitting the products of combustion from an auxiliary combustion chamber into the reaction chamber. the reaction chamber or at the inlet of the apparatus by means of electric heaters.
In the event that the device is used for purification
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
exhaust gases from internal combustion engines, provision may be made for the admission of a certain quantity of air to the inlet of the apparatus supplied by a separate blower.
The operation of the apparatus in question can provide substantial economic benefits. Thus, a gas turbine unit located in the vicinity of an extraction seat and equipped in the manner described so as to use mine methane mixed with the aeration air as fuel can produce the electrical energy in quantities exceeding by several times the specific needs of the extraction seat and to meet by far the needs of this extraction seat and of the heat corons for heating the extraction well and for domestic needs.
It is advantageous to use the apparatus in question for carrying out the "Method of using mine methane as fuel for a gas turbine unit" according to our patent application filed simultaneously with the present application.
