HEAT EXCHANGER
The present invention relates to heat exchangers for nuclear reactors.
It relates more particularly to a heat exchanger used in a nuclear power plant provided with a fast neutron reactor.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
sodium cooled, in which the heat extracted from the core by the sodium is taken up in a heat exchanger by CO2 circulating in a closed circuit comprising a gas turbine.
A power station with such a reactor is described in Belgian patent application N PV 54.103 filed by the applicant on February 2, 1968.
A difficulty inherent in sodium-C02 exchangers of this type is the need to develop a system or an arrangement of equipment making it possible to avoid that, in the event of a possible leak, the CO2 is carried away by the circulation of sodium. in the primary circuit.
The subject of the invention is a sodium-CO 2 heat exchanger making it possible to prevent the entrainment of CO 2 by sodium by self-sealing of the leak in the event of a crack or rupture of tubes.
The present invention consists of a tube bundle heat exchanger for a sodium-cooled nuclear reactor, in which the heat extracted from the core by the sodium is taken up by CO2 circulating in a closed circuit comprising a gas turbine, characterized in that the sodium circulates inside the tubes of the exchanger tube bundle and that the CO2 pressure is greater than that of sodium.
Thanks to these provisions, the CO2 will not escape into the sodium in the event of tube rupture. In fact, on the one hand the formation of carbonates, the product of the reaction between CO 2 and sodium, will automatically plug any leaks in the tubes of the tube bundle and, on the other hand, the sodium-Ce reaction. , exothermic, decreases the resistance characteristics of the steel of the tube and can lead to the latter crushing under the effect of the pressure and contributing to the sealing of the leak.
The invention will be described below with the aid of a non-limiting example with reference to the accompanying figure which schematically represents a vertical section of a sodium-CO 2 heat exchanger according to the invention.

The shell side of the exchanger. consists of a U-shaped tube 9, provided at each end with a passage 10 and 11 for the admission and discharge of the CO2. Inside the tube 9 are mounted the tube bundle 4 and the sodium distribution chambers 2 and 5, these chambers being placed in communication with an inlet 1 and discharge 8 for sodium, respectively by the valves 3 and 7. The entire exchanger is suspended from a plug 12 which rests on a concrete structure 13 forming part of the general structure of the nuclear power plant.
The sodium enters the exchanger through the manifold 1, opens into the distribution chamber 2 via the shut-off valve 3, circulates inside the tube bundle 4, opens into the distribution chamber 5, from where it is directed to a bank of filters 6 passing through the shut-off valve 7 and the collector 8.
The CO2 is admitted into the outer casing 9 of the exchanger through line 10, passes successively around chamber 5, tubes 4 and chamber 2, and leaves the exchanger via line 11,
The plug 12 is provided with two inspection holes closed by the plugs 14 allowing access to the valves 3 and 7, provided with purge taps 15. The distribution chambers 2 and 5 are also provided with inspection holes 17 closed by plugs 18 and intended to facilitate any repair of the tubes 4.
The disconnection of the flanges 19 allows the removal of the plug-exchanger assembly after closing the shut-off valves 3 and 7. The filter 6 'is clamped downstream of the exchanger in order to avoid any possibility of e @ removal of carbonates by sodium in these leaks; it is * housed in an envelope 20 resting on the structure 13, and is coliùaire of the cap 21 which allows an easy removal. Among the advantages of an exchanger according to the invention, it should be mentioned: - self-sealing of the tubes in the event of a leak - very small dimensions of the exchanger, modular design allowing mass production - easy removal of the exchanger by simple disconnection of flanges.
It is understood that the form of implementation of the present invention as described above by way of example is in no way limiting and that various modifications can be made thereto,
Furthermore, it is obvious that sodium and CO2 should be understood in the preceding text in a broad sense, that is to say, that by sodium we also include sodium-potassium eutectics, such as NaK for example, and that by CO2, we understand both CO2 in pure form and CO2 added, for example, to products making it possible to increase the thermodynamic efficiency or to protect the installation.
