<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
On obtient
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

BELGIAN PATENT "Production of a mixture containing cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone"
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention relates to a process for the production of mixtures comprising cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone.
It is known that cyclohexane can be oxidized, at high temperature, under pressure and in the presence of catalysts, to obtain cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone. It is still known from French Patent No. 1,179,392 and Belgian Patent No. 591,610 to conduct the waste gases which are formed during the oxidation of cyclohexane with gases containing oxygen, ie. that is to say to bring them back to the oxidation chamber with gas containing fresh oxygen.
It has been found, however, that in the production of mixtures containing cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone, by continuous oxidation of cyclohexane with gases containing molecular oxygen, it is possible to obtain at temperatures between about 130 and about 180 C and under pressures ranging from about 10 to 30 atm. effect., and recycling of part of the saturated waste gases with the reaction mixture to a degree corresponding to the respective vapor pressure, higher yields of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone than according to the methods known to date, by maintaining in the recycled waste gas a free oxygen content of between 0.2 and 3.0, preferably between 0.5 and 2.0% by volume.
From the point of view of the starting materials, the reaction conditions and the recycling of the waste gases, the present process does not differ from other known processes. It can therefore be adopted for the oxidation of cyclohexane usually used as industrial cyclohexane, ie.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
that is to say with an admissible benzene content ranging from up to 0.5% by weight. It goes without saying that very pure cyclohexane can also be used.
Suitable gas mixtures with an oxidizing effect are gases which contain free oxygen but are otherwise inert, preferably air. It is however also possible to use gases which are richer or poorer in oxygen than air, for example those containing up to 30% by volume or only up to 10% by volume of oxygen.
The oxidation of cyclohexane is carried out by passing, in the presence of usual oxidation catalysts, for example up to 10 ppm of cobalt naphthenate or other soluble cobalt salts, the gas containing oxygen in finely form divided through cyclohexane, at a temperature between about 130 and about 180 ° C, preferably between about 130 and about 150 ° C, and at a pressure of from about 10 to 30 atm. effect., preferably about 10 to 20 atm. effect. It is also possible to oxidize in the absence of any catalyst. The amount of oxidizing gas and the residence time are controlled in such a way that about 1 to 5% of the cyclohexane, especially about 1 to 3%, is converted by oxidation in a single phase.
While, according to the known methods, care is taken to ensure that the oxygen is completely consumed during its passage through the cyclohexane, the quantity of oxygen and the residence time are advantageously adjusted according to the present method so that the gas waste still contains 0.2 to 3.0% by volume of free oxygen. The residual gases are, in part, brought to the oxidation chamber by means of a blower, together with gases containing fresh oxygen.
The oxidation of cyclohexane can also be carried out under conditions in which the oxygen is completely consumed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
during its passage through 'the cyclohexane, and introducing into the gas carried in circuit, preferably shortly after its exit from the oxidation chamber, the quantity of oxygen required in accordance with the present invention. The waste gases entrain, to the extent corresponding to the respective vapor pressure, the constituents of the reaction mixture, in particular cyclohexane, cyclohexanol, cyclohexanone and water, but also possible side products.
The proportions between the waste gas and the gases introduced, containing fresh oxygen, are adjusted so that it is established immediately before the mixing of the recycled gases with the fresh oxidation gases, a content of oxygen between 5 and 15% by volume. When using pure oxygen as gas containing oxygen, it is necessary to supply, during the start-up of the gas circuit, an appropriate quantity of an inert gas, preferably nitrogen, so that the gas circuit can start.
Since an enrichment of the inert gases in the circuit must be avoided, part of the waste gases are withdrawn at the same time and they are relaxed without failing to recover in the usual way the cyclohexane entrained by the waste gas, for example by cooling or condensation, or by washing away with suitable solvents.
The quantity of gas withdrawn from the circuit depends on the level of oxygen or inert gas which it is desired to maintain in the mixture formed from the waste gases and the gases containing freshly supplied oxygen, immediately before entering the circuit. the reaction chamber. It can be calculated, in general, according to the mixture rule, assuming that the oxygen content in the mixture based on the recycle gas and the fresh oxidation gas amounts to approximately 5 - 15% by volume.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The oxidation can be carried out in one or more phases and provide for each circuit a recycling of the waste gases; it is, however, also possible to bring to a preliminary phase of the oxidation, the waste gases originating from a subsequent phase simultaneously with the gas containing free oxygen. The post-treatment of the oxidation mixture is carried out in a manner known per se, for example by distillation, optionally after washing the oxidation mixtures, with water or dilute alkaline lyes.
EXAMPLE
420 kg of cyclohexane and 15 m 3 of air are introduced per hour into a reaction vessel with a capacity of 300 l. A pressure of 20 atm is maintained in this container. effect. and a temperature of 145 C. Simultaneously with the cyclohexane, 3 ppm of cobalt are introduced in the form of naphthenate, as oxidation catalyst. The oxygen content of the waste gases is 3.5% by volume. The waste gas is recycled to the reaction vessel simultaneously with fresh air in a volume ratio of 2.5: 1.
A quantity of waste gas corresponding to the quantity of fresh air supplied is expanded, and the entrained cyclohexane is recovered by cooling and condensation. Before the post-treatment of the continuously withdrawn reaction mixture, the content of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone is determined by gas chromatography. It is found that with a conversion rate of 3% of cyclohexane, cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone are obtained with a yield of 78%.
When, for comparison, the oxidation is carried out so that the waste gas does not contain oxygen and for the rest under the conditions of the example cited, the yield of cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol is only 75.5% for the same conversion rate. We obtain
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
approximately the same lower yield, for the same conversion rate, when the oxidation is carried out under conditions such that the waste gases obtained, although containing 0.3% by volume of oxygen, are not recycled into part as in the example, but immediately subjected to post-processing.
