R-'JLAIS THERMO-MAGHETIQUE
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

THERMO-MAGHETIC R-'JLAIS
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The object of the invention is a thermomagnetic relay creating a building unit intended to monitor inadmissible overloads, more especially in fast circuit breakers and with high breaking capacity, as well as in circuit breakers for protecting motors. .
It is known that the protection of the motors by the bimetallic blades is often insufficient when the protected motor starts under load, because the thermal capacity of the bimetallic blade is smaller than that of the motors, in other words, it is difficult to appropriate the 'thermal image of the motor to that of the bimetallic blade,'
Apart from this, the locks for rapid tripping of circuit breakers are always insensitive and require a relatively high mechanical force (of the order of 80 to 100 grams in multi-pole circuit breakers up to 32 amperes) for their unlocking.
This results in the need to use spring accumulator devices or magnetic amplifiers of the mechanical forces for the thermal elements monitoring the relatively low currents, which is to be avoided,
Finally, for the mass production of "light" or "motor" type circuit breakers, it turns out to be economical to create a thermo-magnetic relay forming a construction unit that can be manufactured separately and then mounted in the circuit breakers according to their specifications. different calibers,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The object of the invention is aimed at such a unit for the construction of a particularly simple thermo-magnetic relay and of a compact shape, especially with regard to its width.
In order to provide a better understanding of the subject of the invention, three exemplary embodiments shown schematically in the appended drawing, on which the element memos bear identical references, will be described by way of illustration and without any limiting nature,
Figure 1 shows a thermo-magnetic relay with the bimetallic blade heated directly.
Figure 2 is a thermo-magnetic relay with the blade heated by its electromagnetic winding.
Figure 3 is an electromagnetic relay for low rated currents.
Figure 4 shows a special form of bimetal blade allowing a relatively large deviation of its end actuating the lock of the circuit breaker or the auxiliary contact of a contactor or an intermediate relay.
The relay according to FIG. 1 consists of a fixed magnetic circuit 1 having the form of a bar, the upper end of which can be bent in the form of a hook and of the movable frame 2, the said magnetic circuit being energized. by winding M.
The lower end of the bar 1 is fixed on an insulating base 6. The movable frame in the form of a stirrup is supported in its normal position by the spring 5 and the screw 4. On the bar 1 is fixed, either by welding, or by a collar, the bimetallic strip T itself also having the shape of a hook but reversed with respect to the bar 1.
The lower end of the winding M is electrically connected (for example welded) with the lower end of the blade T fixed to the bar 1.
The ends 2 'of the reinforcement 2 and T1 of the blade T
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
engage for example in the insulating bar 3 common to several relays and which can move according to the arrow F.
However, a direct or indirect combined heating of the blade T can be obtained by bringing it closer to the winding M.
To avoid increasing the length of the bimetal blade, the latter can be executed according to figure 4, thus adding to the curvature of the arm 11 having the length # the displacement at point, e of the circular part 12, this displacement substantially following the following relationships:

the excitation winding of the electromagnet 1, 2 # R.
The end 13 of the properly bent blade T is fixed on the bar 1. The energizing winding and at the same time of indirect heating of the blade T is electrically cooled by the thin layer 7 of the branch 13 which can be more short that the active branch 13 '. In order to be able to rationally use this indirect heating up to relatively high nominal currents (for example 15 amperes), it is preferable to use wires or tapes having relatively low specific resistances such as, for example:
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
low-additive ferrous alloys (0.3 - 0.7 # / @ / mm2) and inexpensive or 94% Cu, 6% Ni alloys, Those materials which have a high melting temperature (1250 - 1300 C .) are perfectly resistant to strong short-circuit currents, more especially in fast circuit-breakers where the total interruption time of a short-circuit varies between 6 and 10 thousandths of a second,
Insulation 7 is produced according to the object of the invention by a thin layer of silicones, type RTV 757 developed by GEC (USA) and resistant to very high temperatures (several thousand of this),
The high thermal capacity of the relays according to Figures 1 and 2 results in their other non-negligible advantage in circuit breakers with high breaking capacity (for example exceeding 3,000 amps at 220 or 380 V.), that is to say that they prevent rapid reclosing of the circuit breaker after breaking a violent short circuit. The cooling time of the thermal system of these relays is relatively long and the free end (T ') of the bi-metallic blade only returns slowly to its initial position in the event of a violent short-circuit.
Finally, Figure 3 shows schematically and still according to the object of the invention, a magnet-thermal relay for relatively low nominal currents (for example 0.5 - 4 amps) its design being derived from that described according to Figure 2.
The bimetallic blades of these relays are always heated indirectly by resistant wires of small diameter. As a result, these wires melt when the intensity of the short-circuit exceeds a value which varies, in modern circuit-breaker constructions, between 500 and 1,500 amperes (depending on their nominal intensity).
This state of affairs is remedied by bypassing, at the time of an inadmissible overload, either the heater or the bimetallic blade (in the event of its direct heating) by the mobile frame 2 of the electromagnetic relay,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
One end of the heater R is connected with the collar 8, isolated from the bar 1 by the insulating layer 7, on which the flexible current output cable 15 is welded while the other end of the heater R is connected either on the clamp 14 either directly on bar 1 serving at the same time as the arrival of coarant (141) in the relay,
The bypassing of the aforementioned elements aims to significantly reduce the short-circuit current flowing through easily destructible elements.
For example, about 30% of the total current is passed through the heater R and about 70% of the total current in the armature 2. To arrive at a judicious distribution of the two branches # 1 and # 2 of the total current, either the movable armature 2 or the end II of the bar 1 are united with a practically unsolderable contact 10 during the very short period of tripping of the circuit breaker (5 to 10 msec.). The contact 10 can be made, for example carbon or graphite, extending beyond the surface of the frame 2 by only a tenth of a millimeter.
As can be seen in Figures 2 and 3, bar 1 can be used as a current inlet (14 ') through the relay,
