La présente invention a pour objet : - une composition élastomère perfectionnée ; - une composition de ce genre qui soit peu onéreuse;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Banbury.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

"Improved elastomeric compositions intended for the manufacture of tires for vehicles".
The present invention relates to elastomeric compositions. It particularly relates to an elastomeric composition with which it is possible to manufacture tires for vehicles.
During the last twenty years, many different elastomeric compositions have been launched on the market for the manufacture of tires. These compositions range from natural rubber to special types of rubber which are relatively expensive. At all times, researchers are attempting to develop improved elastomeric compositions which would be inexpensive.
The present invention relates to a novel elastomeric composition which can be vulcanized by sulfur and which is suitable for the manufacture of tires, especially for tread materials, this composition being relatively inexpensive and being extremely advantageous, especially as regards its resistance to splitting of the splines during its use in the form of tires.
The present invention relates to: - an improved elastomer composition; - a composition of this kind which is inexpensive;
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
- reduction of the tendency of tires to split in the splines.
The present invention relates to an elastomeric composition intended for the manufacture of tires, which comprises; (a) - from 20 to 80% by weight, relative to the total amount of elastomer contained in the composition, of a rubbery poly-butadiene-cis, in which at least 80% of the polymer is formed by addition-1 , 4 of the monomer and have the cis structure; (b) - from 80 to 20% by weight, based on the total elastomer included in the composition, of a rubbery copolymer of 1,3-butadiene and of styrene; (c) - reinforcing carbon black, and (d) - an extender oil for rubber.
The polybutadiene-cis in accordance with the invention comprises from 20 to 80% of elastomers, relative to the total weight, not taking into account the carbon black and the oil. The remainder of the elastomeric component of the composition consists of 80 to 20% by weight, respectively, based on the total elastomer, of SBR rubber. The amount of carbon black contained in the composition is between 60 and 140% by weight of carbon black per 100 parts of elastomer. The amount of extender oil used is between 40 and 100 parts per 100 parts of elastomer.
The rubbery polybutadiene-cis used in accordance with the present invention is prepared using certain specific organometallic catalysts which exert a slight specific action to polymerize the monomeric butadiene. An example of preparation of such an elastomer is given in British Patent No. 848,065 of October 17, 1956. The cis-polybutadiene used generally has a Mooney viscosity of between 20 and 200, preferably between 30 and 120 (ML-4 to 100 C)
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The butadiene-styrene copolymerized elastomer used in the present invention can be any of those presently known.
This elastomer also preferably has a Mooney viscosity (ML-4 at 100 C) of between 20 and 200, preferably between 30 and 150. These elastomers are prepared in several different ways, one of the most common processes comprising polymerization. in emulsion of butadiene with styrene, in the presence of a catalyst system of the Redox type, at approximately 5 ° C., to form a copolymer containing 5 to 50% by weight, preferably 10 to 30% by weight, of styrene These elastomers are currently well known to those in the art and it is unnecessary to describe them further.
Any carbon black constituting a suitable reinforcing agent for the tread materials can be used in accordance with the invention. In most cases, a high abrasion resistance furnace black (HAF) or a superior abrasion resistance furnace black (SAF) is used.
The extender oil constituting an ingredient of the composition can be any such oil known in the art. A wide variety of these oils are currently available on the market. In this connection, reference is made to the article entitled: "A study of Plasticized High Mooney Viscosity Synthetic Rubbers" by G.H. Swart et al., India Rubber World, volume 124, n (June 1951), pages 309 et seq. Preferably, the oils are oils derived from strongly aromatic hydrocarbons having an initial boiling point greater than 76000 and aniline index of between 100 and 55 ° C at least.
The ingredients of the elastomeric blend can be incorporated together by methods known in the rubber blending art. Thus, the individual components can be mixed in a mixer.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Banbury. It is also possible to use the well-known technique comprising the preparation of a latex masterbatch, an SBR latex being added to a solution or a suspension of polybutadiene-cis, and a mixture of the oil in which the black of carbon is in suspension can be added to the latex.
It is generally preferred not to add more than about 75 to 90 parts of carbon black per 100 parts of elastomer in the absence of extender oil because if such addition occurs it is subsequently difficult. to incorporate the remaining constituents into the mixture.
In another process, all of the components except the carbon black can be mixed together in solution in a solvent (e.g. xylene), the carbon black being added to form a suspension in the solution and the solvent being removed. by vaporization.
Although the four ingredients just described constitute essential ingredients of the rubber for tires according to the present invention, it is possible to add other conventional constituents of the rubber such as scorch retarders, accelerators, anti-oxygen agents. , tackifiers, anti-ozone agents and the like. Of course, during the manufacture of tires, use is made of the usual vulcanizing agents, such as, for example, sulfur and / or compounds which give sulfur.
One of the drawbacks against which the tires must be protected lies in the formation of cracks in the bottom of the splines. Of course, these cracks tend to reduce the actual thickness of the tire and, therefore, to reduce its safety. It is extremely desirable that a tire rubber have as high a resistance as possible to the formation of cracks in the splines. To determine the presence and formation of cracks, a purely qualitative test is carried out, in
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
checking the inside of the spline with the naked eye at various times during use of the tire.
According to this criterion, the vulcanized rubbers for tires, in accordance with the present invention, are superior to the rubbers which are currently available on the market.
Another advantage of the compositions in accordance with the invention lies in the fact that they are relatively inexpensive. When determining the cost price of a composition for the manufacture of a tire, the price established simply in francs per kg of material constitutes an inappropriate criterion. In view of the fact that tires are manufactured by shaping in a mold having a constant volume, it becomes evident that the volume is the important factor in the calculation of the cost price.
Consequently, a figure representing the cost price in "francs per kg-volume" is established. This is achieved by determining the price of the entire tire formula in francs per kg (regular market price) and multiplying this figure by the specific volume (reciprocal of specific density) of the tire mixture. The price of the formula, in francs per kg, is calculated by multiplying the weight of each ingredient by the price of the unit of weight of that ingredient, adding up the prices obtained to find the price of the total formula, and by dividing this price by the 'total weight of the formula.
The specific volume of the formula is calculated by multiplying the weight of each ingredient by its specific volume, adding up these products (volumes), and dividing this sum by the total weight of the formula.

EXAMPLE.
In several specific embodiments of the invention, a series of mixtures of a polybutadiene-cis with an SBR elastomer and carbon black are prepared using the Banbury mixer. Add to the SBR; already extended with 50 parts of oil, polybutadiene-cis, additional oil and carbon black. Various additives mentioned below are also added. These compositions are vulcanized at 1520C for 30 minutes. Standard tests to which samples of the vulcanized compositions are subjected show that the latter possess satisfactory properties for the manufacture of tires.
Tires are manufactured using compositions for treads obtained from the preparations just described. These tires were tested in real road tests and obtained the following '' results:

The cracking tests mentioned in the table above have already been described in this presentation.
The abrasion index is a relative figure, obtained by giving an assumed value of 100 to a control composition A. The abrasion index is measured with tires whose treads are made of the compositions mentioned, after various mileages during actual commissioning on an automobile. A value greater than 100 shows that the abrasion resistance is greater than that of the control composition.
Static traction indices are also measured with compositions for tire bearings on a tire in use on an automobile.
The automobile is attached, by means of a device for measuring the traction forces, to a truck with the brakes applied. To carry out the test, you start the engine of the automobile and try to set the automobile in motion until the wheels begin to turn about their axes. When this rotation occurs, the tensile force is read on the measuring instrument making the connection. Again, the value 100 is arbitrarily assigned to Witness A.
The slip index is also measured on the treads of tires in service on an automobile. To the automobile is attached a rifle with three barrels in each of which a charge of zinc oxide is made "from" in the direction of the bottom, so as to leave a mark on the pavement. The automobile is driven along the wet asphalt concrete pavement at a given speed, which is measured by firing the first two barrels of the rifle at.
2 second intervals. After the second cannon has fired, the brakes are applied to lock the wheels and held on until the car comes to a complete stop. Applying the brakes results in
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
the shot of the third cannon. The speed of the car is then calculated from the distance between the first two marks left by the zinc oxide. The distance between the third mark and where the car stops is the skate distance. Again, a value of 100 is arbitrarily assigned to Control A, and values greater than 100 indicate increased slip resistance.
The foregoing figures show the superiority of the tread compositions according to the present invention with regard to the formation of cracks after 19,310 kilometers of use. Although these tests are qualitative, they nevertheless show a striking improvement in the compositions, compared to conventional compositions for treads. In addition, compositions according to the present invention have a general tendency to exhibit a cost advantage over conventional compositions, in that they can contain relatively large percentages. inexpensive thinners without reducing desirable tread properties.
Thus, compositions in accordance with the present invention and containing 25-75% by weight of polybutadiene-cis and 75 - 25% by weight of SBR rubber, these two figures being given relative to the total weight of the elastomer, take into account free from oil and carbon black, as well as 50 to 75 parts of extender oil and 75 to 95 parts of carbon black, (per 100 parts of rubber) show improved resistance to the formation of cracks compared to conventional compositions and are generally more economical.
Compositions in accordance with the present invention can also be used to manufacture tire casings by operating the mixture in an appropriate manner.
