Tube composite

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

The sampling line 10, the thickness of which is for example 0.89 mm, can be made, for example, of a metallic material such as incyxdalbe steel. The heating resistors 12 are of the conventional type, for example a nickel and chromium alloy wire insulated by a polymer tape covered with a simple wrapping 13 of glass fibers. The insulating polymer tape covering the heating resistors may be of a known thermoplastic material such as poly-tetrafluoroethylene (commonly called Teflon). The glass fiber wrapping covering the heating resistors ensures their mechanical protection.
The resistors 12 are wound in tight helices around the sampling tube 10 and are kept diametrical.

The adhesive strips 16 may be a single continuous strip of nylon fibers or the equivalent which is helically rolled around the tube 10 and the associated resistors.

A polymeric film tape 21 with edges overlapping about 25% of its width in the illustrated embodiment is wrapped around the foamed plastic layer 18. The "Mylar" film of EI DuPont de Nemours and Company is an excellent material for tape. This material is a film of a polyethylene terephthalate polyester exhibiting strength and strength characteristics and which is moisture proof. This polyester has a very high molecular weight (about 10,000) and is obtained by reacting an equal number of moles of ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid.
The polymer tape can be 0.025 mm thick.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
A flexible plastic outer jacket or coating 22 finally surrounds the wrapped heat-insulating layer to increase the wear and moisture resistance of the composite tube and prevent it from deterioration. This outer jacket may be of any suitable plastic material such as, for example, polyvinyl chlorides, polyethylenes, polyurethanes, neoprenes or fluorocarbons (eg Teflon).
The installation dimensions of the tube made up of the invention are less high than in the constructions used than at present and the tube is considerably less required by heavy shrinkage than in known installations. The srbe, because of its uniformity and its operational reliability, ensures much more uniform and precise results on the fluid samples thus taken.
The composite tube is capable, with a heating resistor of 1.6 mm in cross section, to provide approximately 9.25 watts per (30 cm) in the ambient temperature ranges of between approximately -28.9 C and 37.8 C and is capable of maintaining a temperature difference of up to about 93.3 C.
In general, the wattage may increase for lower ambient temperatures, but it has been found that the ambient temperature should be as low as possible in the range for high wattages until there is a maximum limit determined. mined for ambient temperature versus power in atts per foot (30 cm) for different types of heaters and different ranges of wattage. Figs. 3 and 4 show another embodiment of the composite tube. In this embodiment, the composite tube T 'may include a sampling line 10 and heaters 12 arranged in substantially the same manner as those of FIGS. 1 and 2. However, this sampling line and these heating resistors may be surrounded by a layer 30 of filling material which may be a fibrous material, such as for example jute or other filamentary material, and which is slightly heat-resistant. -insulating. This filling layer 30 gives a practically symmetrical configuration to the whole and is also capable of absorbing shocks.
A heat insulating tape 32 with overlapped edges, laminated asbestos and polyester is wound helically around the layer 30. The above "Mylar" film can be laminated with asbestos in known manner to form an insulating tape. Preferably enough tape is wrapped around the filling layer so that the thickness of the filling layer and the tape is about 4.7 mm. A layer 33, preferably of an extruded flexible plastic material such as the above-mentioned polyvinyl chloride, covers the wrapped assembly and forms a moisture resistant barrier which protects the wrapped assembly.
A flexible metallic protective layer 36, such as a BX shield, covers the assembly surrounded by the plastic material to force a high tensile and crush resistant shielded tube. A flexible coating 38 of flexible plastic material is then preferably extruded over the flexible armor 36. The coating 38 is substantially similar to the coating 22 of the first embodiment described ensuring that the armor is corrosion resistant and to humidity. The tape 32 also prevents any electrogalvanic action between the sample line and the metal shield 36.
In addition, the shield 36 materially increases the tensile and crush strength of the composite tube, the plastic cover 38 being mechanically interlocked.

in the ribs or corrugations of the protective layer 36.
Fig. 5 shows another embodiment of the tube T "comprising a flexible shield and using a heat-insulating layer 40 of the aforementioned flexible cellular plastic material such as foamed polyurethane, instead of the filling layer 30 and tape 32 in the embodiment shown in Figures 3 and 4. In other respects the assembly of Figure 5 is substantially similar to that of Figures 3 and 4.
It is clear from the above description that the invention provides a novel composite tube comprising a sampling line around which electrical heating elements are helically wound, and around which is provided an insulating layer of solid. flexible cellular plastic material or a tape of insulating material which is then wrapped in a flexible plastic, outer casing which may include flexible shielding to protect the tube. The tube can easily be installed and handled much faster and more conveniently than in conventional designs and is less expensive.
Certain particular embodiments have been shown to illustrate the invention, but it will be understood that the various changes and. Changes can be made without departing from its scope.
