<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"INJECTION PRESSES FOR PLASTICS AND SIMILAR MATERIALS"
We know the so-called "Weissenberg" effect according to which a fluid and elastic material, that is to say visco-elastic, introduced between two plane walls rotating with respect to one another is forced back into the chamber. centripetal sense (brazen deformation and flow.
Mareus Reiner H.K. Lewis, London 1960, pages 310 to 313).
Extrusion machines based on this principle have already been proposed, but they have not been able to be imposed in practice.
Indeed, in these applications of the Weissenberg effect, it is observed that, if the products obtained exhibit a remarkable homogeneity, on the other hand the pressure effect is very weak.
This pressure is far from reaching the high values required for extrusion or molding.
The invention proposes a combination of means making it possible, on the one hand, to use the advantageous property of obtaining a homogeneous material by the Weissenberg effect and, on the other hand, the realization of a. sufficient pressure for injection.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
By simple constructive solutions, the invention @ makes it possible to replace the classic and expensive screw of the usual injection presses,
Essentially, it provides for the association of a device based on the Weissenberg principle and a press injecting the. material thus prepared in a mold. The first device is fed either by simple gravity from an overhanging uremia, or by the complementary action of a short feed screw which can simultaneously ensure the Weissenberg effect.
In an advantageous variant of the invention, the Weissenberg device constitutes the actual piston of the press *
In order to bring out the above description more clearly, the appended drawings represent, by way of example and without limitation, embodiments of the method of the invention.
Figure @ shows, as a reminder, a classic Archimedean screw press.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of an assembly according to the invention.
FIG. 3 shows a variant in which the "Weissenberg" device constitutes the actual piston of the press.
Figure 4 is a section through a screw feed simultaneously providing the "Weissenberg" effect.
Referring to Figure 1, the conventional screw press has a feed hopper 1 opening into the conduit 2 containing the Archimedean screw 3 and surrounded by a heating member 4. The conduit 2 ends in a nozzle 5 which puts it in communication with the mold 6 of known constitution, The equipment shown in FIG. 2 consists of the hopper 7 which opens into the avat8 part of the chamber, between

A piston 13 can slide in the cylinder under the action of an appropriate means (not shown).
The bottom of the chamber, possibly of conical section, carries a nozzle 14 to which the mold 15 is connected. Heaters 16 surround the chamber to maintain and, if necessary, bring the material to the correct injection temperature.

The device of FIG. 4 consists of a cylinder 30 in which turns a short screw 31 which pushes forward the material supplied by the hopper 29. The material thus arrives with regularity in the chamber 33 corresponding to the chamber 8 of Figure 2. This chamber is formed by the end of the screw 31. acting as a rotating disc and the bottom of the cylinder 30, forming a fixed wall. The latter wall is pierced with the opening 32 or 14. which corresponds to the opening! 11 / of Figure 2. The means for fixing the device, actuating the screw and connecting the device and the chamber of the piston are of known embodiment or are described above and are not shown for simplicity of the drawing. .
The device shown in figure
4 allows direct injection without piston (intrusion) and extrusion, because it overcomes the insufficient pressure of the Weissenberg.
The operation, for example, of the device of figure
3, therefore understands as night the raw material, normally in the granular or powdery state, coming from the feed hopper 21 penetrates through 20 and 24 into the chamber formed between the front wall of the hollow piston 23 and the profiled disc 28. By the rotation of the latter and as a consequence of the Weissenberg effect, the plastic material progresses towards the center 25 of the front wall of the piston, plasticizing and homogenizing in an advantageous manner. It then penetrates into the cylinder 17 normally at the desired degree of viscosity for the injection. The hollow piston 23 then being actuated forwards creates the pressure desired for the injection of the plastic material which is forced back into the mold. .
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
When the operation is complete, the hollow piston is withdrawn to its starting position so as to bring the opening 24 below the opening 20 and a new cycle can be started.
It is obvious to him that other modifications of embodiment can be envisaged without thereby departing from the scope of the present invention which may be characterized by the following.
