<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Tight seal for swivel joints for pipes.
The present invention relates to a gasket gasket for pipes and, more particularly, to a gasket especially intended for swivel joints of pipes through which strong acids or other corrosive fluids pass.
It is now possible to make a swivel seal liner, in which a metallic pushing element is used to compress a non-elastomeric plastic seal, so as to bring it into fluid-tight contact with the walls of the chamber. enclosing the filling. This packing behaves very satisfactorily within certain pressure and temperature ranges, and also
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
when it comes to passing different types of fluids.
However, the construction of some gaskets is such as to place the elastic metallic thrust member in a position where it is directly exposed to the fluids circulating in the pipes. As this element is normally made of a very thin elastic metal, it is quickly put out of service in the presence of strong acids. Although the non-elastomeric plastic seal is able to resist the action of acids, the pushing member does not resist this action, so the gasket no longer plays its role. The present invention solves this problem with the linings.
The objects of the present invention are to provide: - An improved packing of joints for pipes.
- A packing which behaves in a very satisfactory manner in the presence of strong acids, or other corrosive fluids.
- A metallic thrust element, which is isolated from the fluid circulating in the pipes thanks to a seal which is inert to the action of the fluid.
- A gasket which comprises an elastomeric seal, the elastic compressibility of which is negligible, and an elastic thrust element, which gives the seal its elasticity in order to permanently ensure the desired fluid-tight seal, in spite of the irregularities which may present surfaces in contact.
- A seal which is mounted in a chamber of a swivel seal in such a way that wear of the seal is greatly reduced.
Other characteristics and advantages of the present invention will emerge from the description which follows, given with reference to the appended drawing and giving by way of explanation but in no way limiting an embodiment in accordance with the invention.

FIG. 2 is an elevational view, in partial section, of the seal of the aforementioned gasket.
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the pushing element of the aforementioned lining.
FIG. 4 is a view partially in elevation and in section of the packing.
FIG. 5 is a front view of the packing, partly cut away in order to show in more detail the elastic fingers of the push element.
Looking further at the figures, Figure 1 shows a swivel joint indicated by the reference numeral 10. This swivel joint comprises a female duct 12, a male duct 14 mounted so as to be able to turn inside. laughing of the female duct by means of balls 16 arranged in raceways 17 and held in place by a plug 18. In addition, a dust seal 19 is placed in a groove made in the male duct and seals the swivel joint against the female duct.
The pivoting joint 10 comprises a channel 22 in which the fluid passes, which channel is circumscribed by a chamber 24 intended to receive a gasket. The chamber is delimited by a first radial wall 26 and by an outer cylindrical wall 28 which both form part of the female duct 12, and by a second radial wall 30 as well as by an inner cylindrical wall 32, which form both part of the male duct and which respectively face the first radial and cylindrical walls. The fluid circulating in the channel 22 can enter the chamber ′ 2,4 by borrowing an interval formed between the internal cylindrical wall 32 and the first radial wall 26.
Although the swivel joint shown in Figure 1 has
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
an inner cylindrical wall, this is sometimes omitted and its presence is not necessary with regard to the present invention.
A gasket 36, which is one embodiment of the invention, comprises a non-elastomeric annular gasket 38, made of a plastic material, such as for example "Teflon" or polyethylene. An important characteristic of this seal is its resistance to acids. The seal has a cylindrical intermediate wall 39, parallel inner flanges 40, formed integrally with the intermediate wall and projecting inwardly from this wall, cheeks 41 projecting axially on either side. inner flanges, and outer flanges 42 integrally formed with the cheeks and projecting outwardly therefrom while being parallel to their respective neighboring inner flanges.
The outer edges terminate in edges 43, which are radially spaced inwardly from the outer surface of the intermediate wall. Further, the facing inner and outer flanges define outwardly directed annular grooves 44, and the spaced apart and facing inner flanges define a channel 45 directed towards the outside. interior. Due to the composition of the material from which it is made, the joint is relatively rigid although the inner rim, the cheek and the outer rim placed on either side of the intermediate wall are able to flex at a certain angle. relative to the intermediate wall.
The liner 36 of the present invention also includes a pushing member 50 which is advantageously made of metal, since it is the metal which provides the best pushing effect. The pushing element 50 comprises an intermediate split part 51 of annular shape, the maximum diameter of which is slightly greater than that of the outer wall 28 of the chamber 24 when the intermediate part of the pushing element is at.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the free state. In addition, this element comprises a series of elastic tubular fingers 52, formed in one piece with the intermediate part and projecting inwardly, the fingers facing each other on either side of the intermediate part, diverging between them. relative to each other and being flexibly and resiliently movable towards each other.
The neighboring fingers disposed on each of the sides of the intermediate part are contiguous with each other and are separated only by narrow slots 53. Pls, each finger ends in an edge 54, and all the edges of the fingers of each of the fingers. sides of the intermediate portion define a substantially continuous circumference. In order for these fingers to be as close to each other as possible, the adjacent sides of the neighboring fingers converge to these edges.
The pushing element 50 is diametrically spaced apart and placed on the joint 38, the intermediate part 51 of the element covering the intermediate wall 39 at the joint and the elastic fingers 52 penetrating the grooves 44. Due to the divergence of the placed fingers facing each other and the limited elasticity of the flanges 40 and 42, the latter are caused to move away from each other by taking the divergent arrangement shown in Figure 4.
In use, the gasket 36 is mounted in the chamber 24, the intermediate portion 51 of the pushing member 50 being diametrically shouldered by the outer cylindrical wall of the chamber. The lining is thus kept immobile relative to the female duct 12, which eliminates the wear of the intermediate part of the thrust element following the rotation with respect to one another of the ducts 12 and 14. When the male and female conduits are assembled with one another by means of the balls 16, the radial walls 26 and 30 comprising the flanges 40 and 42, as well as the rows of fingers 52 arranged opposite each other ,
in order to bring them significantly
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
parallel to each other as shown in Figure 1. Since the fingers are then subjected to a certain stress, they elastically press their respective outer edges 42 to bring them into fluid-tight contact with the neighboring radial walls 26 and 30. Further, and this is of particular importance with respect to the present invention, the seal 38 isolates the thrust member 50 from the fluid flowing in the channel.
22.
It follows that even though this fluid is a very strong acid likely to cause deterioration of the element normally. ) relatively thin thrust, the fluid has no effect on the seal of the invention, since the seal is inert to this fluid and the thrust element is isolated.
Another point worth noting concerns the canal
45, which admits fluid from line 22 such that fluid pressure is exerted on the interior rims 40 and helps to provide better fluid-tight contact between the exterior rims 42 and their walls respective radials 26 and 30.
Although the outer edges 42 of the gasket 38 'have negligible elastic compressibility, they nevertheless permanently provide a very effective seal and themselves follow the irregularities of the sealing surfaces in contact (between the outer edges 42 and the walls 26 and
30), due to the very large number of places where the elastic pressure of each of the fingers 52 is applied. There is therefore an effective static seal between the outer rim 42 and the first radial wall 36, and an effective dynamic seal between the outer rim 42 and the second radial wall 30. The low coefficient of friction of the gasket facilitates the rotation with respect to one another of the contacting surfaces ensuring dynamic sealing.
It follows from the foregoing that the improved packing of the present invention is particularly applicable in
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
swivel joints which allow corrosive fluids, such as strong acids, to pass through. The important feature of this seal is the isolation of a thrust element, which is not normally resistant to corrosive fluids, by a seal resistant to these fluids. The present packing has proven to provide an excellent solution to the problem of the vulnerability of the thrust element to corrosive fluids.
It goes without saying that the present invention has been described above for explanatory purposes only, but in no way limiting, and that all variations can be made without going beyond its scope.
