<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

A method of packaging spongy material and packaging for this material.
The subject of the invention is a method of packaging spongy material such as synthetic material foam. as well as a packaging for this material. We know that the latter, which is very light, occupies considerable storage space and that for transport and presentation for sale, it requires very bulky packaging, causing a large consumption of packaging material. and misusing the carrying capacity of the means of transport.
The method of packaging spongy material according to the present invention and the resulting packaging remedy these drawbacks by greatly reducing the volume of this material.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In accordance with the method according to the invention, the spongy material placed between lower and upper wrapping sheets is introduced into one form and a plunger is pressed in this form to strongly compress the spongy material. The edges of the unwrapped sheets are then released from the form, the edges of the upper sheet and of the lower sheet are fixed to each other by a suitable means such as gluing or welding, the piston is withdrawn from the form and the rubber is removed. closed package containing the compressed spongy material ...
'
In a practical execution of this process, the spongy material is preferably introduced in a parallelepedal shape comprising folding walls in the plane of the bottom which has been covered with a wrapping sheet of larger dimensions than those of the bottom, and placed on the filled spongy material. taking the form of a second wrapping sheet. The piston capable of strongly compressing the spongy material is then pushed into the form, the walls are folded down to have access to the edges of the two packaging sheets and to fix them to each other on the four sides, and the piston is raised.
Advantageously, is introduced into the spongy material, before its compression, a plate pierced with holes, one of which protrudes from the spongy material and will serve as a handle after fixing the edges of the packaging sheets, and the others of which ensure the anchoring. age of the plaque in the compressed spongy material.
Therefore, the packaging according to the invention comprises two packaging sheets which are fixed together on all four sides at their edges and enclose the spongy material in a highly compressed state. This packaging may be provided with a handle anchored in the compressed spongy material,
The appended drawing shows by way of example one embodiment of the invention.

Fig. 2 shows a package containing the spongy material in a compressed state.
One form advantageously used for packaging the spongy material comprises a rectangular bottom 1 at the edges of which are articulated walls 2, 3, 4 and 5 so that they can be raised to form a parallelepipedic container open at the top. , or be folded in the plane of the bottom, as represented by 2 ', 3', 4 'and 5' in FIG. 1 in dotted lines.
A sheet is placed on the folded-down form. packaging 6, the dimensions of which exceed those of the bottom 1.
The wrapping sheets can be of heavy paper, synthetic material or any other suitable material. The walls are raised and the form is filled with spongy material, for example flakes of foam of a synthetic material, or sheets or plates of this material which may have the dimensions corresponding to those of the bottom, or larger dimensions, then reduced by folding the sheet or plate !: those at the back. A second wrapping sheet 7, also larger than the bottom of the form, is placed on the filled form, and a piston 8 is pressed therein to strongly compress the material. While maintaining the latter compressed by the piston, the walls are folded down in order to have access to the edges of the sheets 6 and 7 which are fixed to one another, for example by gluing or by welding.
Preferably, the edges of the long sides are fixed first and then those of the short sides. It is also possible to first fold only the opposite walls 2 and 4 and join the edges thus made accessible and then fold down the walls. 3 and 5 to complete the gluing or welding of the edges, the piston is finally raised, the closed packaging is removed and the packaging sheet of the following operation is placed on the bottom of the folded form.
'To provide the packaging in a very simple way with a

Gnee 8, is inserted into the spongy material, before its compression, a plate 9 pierced with holes 10, one of which protrudes from the spongy material to constitute the handle. This plate can be, for example, of cardboard resistant to folding during compression or of a fairly flexible synthetic material. During the compression of the spongy material, it enters the interior holes 10 and then holds the plate 9 securely inside the package.
We thus obtain a packet of reduced height and slightly convex on the large faces, enclosing on all sides the spongy material which is held therein in the compressed state by two wrapping sheets, the edges of which are fixed on the sides. The handle with which the package can be fitted facilitates its handling during transport and storage.
Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiment which has been described and shown by way of example, and one would not depart from its scope by making modifications thereto.
