<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The present invention relates to polyethylene-based compositions and to articles made with such compositions.
The articles produced in accordance with the invention from compositions containing a polymer of ethylene and a copolymer of ethylene and isobutyl acrylate exhibit good resistance against cracking from environmental influences, good resistance to crumble at low temperature and high strength,
The polyethylene used in accordance with the invention may belong to the categories having low, intermediate, or high densities of this product, or to blends having densities between about 0.90 and 0.97.
The ethylene-isobutyl acrylate copolymer, which is advantageously combined with polyethylene, is a solid polymer containing in the polymerized molecule and in combined form about 65 to 98% ethylene and about 2 to 35% of acrylate. isobutyl. The preferred copolymer contains about 70 to 80% ethylene and about 20 to 30% isobutyl acrylate, by weight.
The copolymer of ethylene and isobutyl acrylate can be prepared by methods known in the art, generally consisting of polymerizing ethylene and isobutyl acrylate under elevated pressures up to, for example, 112. kg / om2, at temperatures between approximately 100 C and 300 C and in the presence of a peroxidized catalyst, such as tert-butyl peroxide, tert-butyl peracetate or lauroyl peroxide.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The compositions and articles in accordance with the invention advantageously contain from 30 to 75% by weight of one or more polyethylenes and approximately 25 to 70% by weight of the copolymer formed by ethylene and isobutyl acrylate.
Compositions containing between 45 and 65% polyethylene and between 35 and 55 by weight of the ethylene-isobutyl acrylate copolymer have been found to be particularly desirable and preferable.
As for the polyethylenes used in the polymerized mixture, it was found that mixtures of a high density (0.945 g / cm3 to 0.965 g / om3) and a low density (0.914 g / cm3 to 0.935 g / om3) of the polyethylene are preferable, 43 to 99% of the mixture being formed by low density polyethylene and 1 to 57% of the mixture by high density polyethylene.
The process for obtaining the mixed compositions is not particularly critical and can be carried out in any suitable manner. The polymers of the composition as a whole may, for example, be mixed together in any order in a kneader containing the product, for example a mixer-extruder or a Banbury mixer, or on a machine where the mixing takes place. outside, for example a roller mill. If desired, part of the mixing operation can be combined with shaping, for example by performing the final mixing in the tube of an extruder or in the cylinder of an injection molding press.
According to a variant, it is also possible to jointly precipitate the polymers from a common solvent.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The product according to the invention can be used without any addition of other substances or can be mixed with pigmenta, lubricants, antistatic agents, plasticizers, antioxidants, preservatives, charges, etc.
Carbon black can, for example, be added in amounts ranging from 2 to 5% by weight relative to the mixture of the copolymer of polyethylene and ethylene-isobutyl acrylate, in order to improve the weather resistance. of this mixture and protect it from the harmful effects of ultraviolet light.
The compositions according to the invention can be made into a variety of articles, such as films, sheets and containers, etc. by means of known techniques, including injection molding,. blow molding, compression molding, calendering and extrusion.
In the course of the present description, the parts and percent are understood, unless otherwise stated, by weight and the implementation of the invention will be better understood with the aid of non-limiting examples below,
EXAMPLE 1.
A polymerization mixture is prepared by dry mixing 43 parts of a high density polyethylene amounting to 0.960 g / om3, of a melt index of 5.0 decigrams / min, with 42 parts of a low polyethylene. density of 0.930 g / om3 and a melt index of 30.0 dg / min, and 15 parts of an ethylene-isobutyl aorylate copolymer itself containing 26% isobutyl acrylate d 'a density of 0.9235 g / om3 with a melt index of 2.5 dg / min.
Density measurements are carried out according to the standard
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
ASTM D-792-50 modified for a liquid temperature of 25 ¯ 0.2 0. The melt index is determined according to ASTM D-1238-52T. This mixture is dressed through a mixer-extruder to obtain an intimate and homogeneous mixture of the low density and high density polyethylene.

and ethylene-dliaobutyl aorylate co-polymer. This composition was examined for cracking under the surrounding stress using the method given below. The polymer composition is molded according to the standard
ASTM D-746-52T into sheets 3.56 mm thick and these sheets were cut to obtain samples of
12.7 x 38.1 mm.
These samples were annealed for 30 minutes in boiling distilled water, then dried and conditioned for 24 hours at room temperature. Each sample is placed between bending jaws and a regulatory notch is produced on the near face. The sample is then bent at an angle of

After that, the folded sheet was inserted into a test tube filled with a 0.5 aqueous solution of "Igepal CO-630" (registered trademark), which is a cracking agent formed by an alkyl-aryl polyethylene glycol. the tube and its contents and heated to 50 ° C. until the examined sheet exhibits cracks on the surface of the polymer, visible to the naked eye.
All the samples which are not attacked after 24 hours are retested in a 33.3% solution of the thumping agent, this solution exerting a more severe cracking effect. Results are scored according to the number of hours it takes to achieve an attack of 50 samples.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
According to the above-mentioned test, the polymeric mixture of the invention indicates a value of 31 hours with the cracking agent at 33.3%. On the contrary, high density polyethylene and low density polyethylene have values of 3.0 and 0.75 hours, respectively, already with the stripping agent at 0.5%.
In a similar manner, compositions in accordance with the invention are prepared by mixing and extruding the various polyethylenes with an ethylene-isobutyl acrylate copolymer containing 26% isobutyl aorylate, this in variable proportions. The physical properties and the cracking resistance values of these compositions are given in Table I below (samples 0 to I) The stiffnesses indicated in the table are obtained according to the standard ASTM D-747-61T, tensile strength, stress strength and elongations are obtained according to ASTM D-638-58T (using die B of ASTM D-12-51T). The samples having a thickness of 3 are annealed,
56 mm for 10 minutes in boiling distilled water before performing the tests. The spalling point is determined according to the standard ASTM D-746-52T and the melt index according to the standard ASTM D-1238-52T, as indicated above.

The compositions based on the mixtures of the polymers indicated in Example 1 (that is to say samples 0 to I) are prepared by usual molding techniques in the form of bottles for detergent, using a usual maohine.
When these bottles are filled with household detergent compositions, they show an excellent resistance to cracking and cracks for prolonged periods,
Likewise, conventional films, filaments, tubes and pipes, rods, sheets, coated fila and cables and other articles made with the new polyethylene compositions containing the isobutyl ethylene acrylate copolymer have significantly better resistance to external cracking influences than the items sui are made only with polyethylene.

For comparison, compositions were prepared of a polymer mixture as in Example 2, but with an ethylene-ethyl acrylate copolymer containing 19% ethyl acrylate and having a density of 0.927 g. / cm2 and a melt index of 11 dg / min., to replace the ethylene-isobutyl acrylate copolymer.
As shown in Table III below, these polyethylene / ethylene-ethyl acrylate copolymer blends and articles are less resistant, that is, they are more easily subjected to stress cracking, compared to the polymers of Examples 1 and 2 which are in accordance with the invention.
