  CENTRE NATIONAL DE RECHERCHES METALLURGIQUES .Association sana but lucratif à Bruxelles (Belgique).

 <Desc/Clms Page number 3>

   Method for determining the level of charge in an enclosure.

   The present invention relates to an improvement of main patent No. 646,066 which is characterized in that the fluctuations in the level of the charge in an enclosure and in particular in a blast furnace are determined by using one or more range finders. optics,

 EMI2.1
 It is known that these optical telemetry are based on the fact that it measures the distance existing between an object and a demineralized nit by projecting on these objects, from an emission a radiation of visible light or preferably infrared. rougI '1> nt ltooeien% ation is known with respect to a direction of reference' 1 e, and "'i! 1 \ rneàuiang in a point whose position is known in fone 1 le that of 1 .mcttoar,

   the angle made with a direction do rdfl rencc '3 lo faiccau of rayomnament returned by the object towards this point; ,, II '.; which makes it possible to calculate the position of the object with respect to the transmitter and consequently with respect to any place whose position is known or conaaisaable with respect to that of the emitter, and of the receiver. Such methods are generally sufficient '"to provide J!' é8ult8 not requiring very great precision 'OUtCf i'o as they are sensitive to a number of disturbed elements, such as the absorption of rays , nnemo infra-ruugos, during i their 6s & jsµ9 19a variations in ambient temperature on the said sort. and, di 'Samce too large, presence of dust., diffusion of the fai:

  water, low reflection coefficient, emitted bandwidth, 0 .. too large torture of the beam, dimensions of the light spot on the illuminated object, interference with other beams. etc ..., it follows that these methods may in certain cases not be entirely satisfactory when the necessary precision is very high.

   The object of the present improvement is a method making it possible to remedy the drawbacks mentioned above,

The method which is the subject of the present invention is essentially characterized in that the level of the charge in an enclosure and in particular in a blast furnace is measured by means of a range finder using radiation emitted by a laser type device. or Maser.

   This method has the advantage of very high precision in particular because the Laser or Maser radiation is very intense, which allows: a very high focusing of the emitted beam, a very small impact spot and therefore a more precise measurement of the viewing angles.
