EMI3.3
bijzonder wanneer men chloor gebruikt ale ohloreringemiddel.

Volgens do uitvinding bereidt men perohlooretheen door

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

When in the oxyohlorers, of 1,2-dichloroethane, chlorine is used instead of hydrochloric acid as the oxidizing agent, some difficulties are encountered in controlling the reaction temperatures and the use of the chlorocarbon hydrogen and chlorine feedstock
Thus, usually perchlorethylene is obtained in the oxyohlorination of 1,2-dichloroethane, whereby 1,2-diochloroethane,

In carrying out the initial chlorination step of the invention, elemental chlorine is introduced into contact with 1 # 2-dl chlorothane, preferably in a molar ratio of 1 to 1.

ring stage # While an equimolar amount of oxygen and 1,1-dichlorothane is usually maintained, it is of course possible to vary this considerably.
As much as 0.25 mole of oxygen can be used per mole of 1,2-dichloroethane supplied to the reaction zone. Likewise, an excess of oxygen can be used, although an excess of above 5 moles of acidic

As well as the temperature, the duration for the reactive materials depends on different stages of the ohlore.

ringo methods set forth herein, in part, depend on the particular reaction being carried out.
In the chloroform, i.e. in the zone in which chlorine is contacted with 1,2-diochloroethane, preferably, duration times are maintained in a low range, i.e., in the range 0.25-20 sec.

Preferably, the duration in the chlorination zone is kept at about 2-5 seconds. Contain times above the upper limit of

the above range should generally be avoided.
During the oxychlorination reaction, the contact times are controlled such that the reacting gases are retained in the reaction zone for a period of 4-25 ecos or more. Thus, during the oxychlorination reaction, one may optionally use a duration of considerably more than 20 seconds. Generally speaking, the shortest possible contact time, which will still provide adequate utilization of the oxygen and organic feedstock being reacted in the oxychlorination step, is the desired end goal. the chlorination stage or zone is supplied, used, and from this zone an chlorination product emerges. The chlorination products exiting from this zone or stage are hydrogenated hydrocarbons and hydroxyl hydrate. The reaction gongs coming out of the chlorination zone are maintained, generally by controlling the chlorination reaction taking place therein such that less than 5 of the reaction gongs removed from it are present as elemental chlorine.

To accomplish this control, the contact times, temperatures, and inputs of the components to the reaction are counted in to provide an chlorine content of the starting stream as indicated above. Generally, more chlorine is used in the reaction zone for longer durations. * Likewise, higher temperatures promote the sub-
EMI7.5
recovery operations that are carried out in the recovery zone. Furthermore, smaller amounts of chlorine fed to the zone below any excess above the preferred 1 to 1 molar ratio of chlorine to 1,2-dichloroethane are generally desirable.
For example, if the reaction genes exiting the chlorination zone contain too much chlorine, the desired concentration of chlorine can again be attained by adjusting the amount per mole of 1,2-diochloroethane supplied to the reaction zone to provide for less ohloor or
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
by adding more 1,2-dichloroethane to the amount of chlorine supplied per rod, so that the molar ratio of 1 to 1 is exceeded by the organic supply * In any case, one skilled in the art can, using the general proposals, that longer contact times and higher temperatures plus higher chlorine concentrations promote more extensive chlorination,
easily set these various conditions singly or in combination to provide a reaction in the hydrogenation zone which will provide a mixture containing elemental chlorine within the desired range.
The reactions taking place according to the invention can be carried out in a fixed bed operation or in a fluidized bed operation or, if desired, according to any combination of fixed and fluidized beds. Generally speaking, the particular type of reaction used is largely a matter of choice, as both solid and fluidized bed operations have been found to be effective in this process.
Since significant heat is released in both the chlorination and oxychlorination reactions, some means must be provided with each reactor used for the reaction. or reaction zones, thereby providing temperature control of these reactions or zones. Such control is readily achieved by appropriate dismantling of reactors, spraying coolant into reaction zones, by inserting coils into reaction beds, by the use of bayonet coolers in reaction beds, or by using other such heat exchange devices,
which can be used appropriately. Effective utilization of such heat exchange equipment readily achieves the desired temperature control of said reaction.
The catalyst used for the oxychlorination of the products from the chlorination zone can be any known oxyhydrogen.
