<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of an apparatus for preparing a die; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a formed metal plate; and, Figures 5 and 6 are schematic views of an alternative forming apparatus.
According to the invention, one begins by taking an impression of the patient's mouth in the usual way. This impression 1 (as shown in Fig. 3) is placed in a cylinder with open ends 2 on a flat surface 3 and fixed in this cylinder by modeling clay 4 or by other suitable means , The modeling clay 4 also serves to seal the lower end of the cylinder 2. A layer of gelled epoxy resin is applied with a brush on the surface of the impression and allowed to partially harden before filling cylinder 2 to the edge with a layered mass of mixture of casting resin and a fiberglass cloth to obtain a matrix useful for forming the metal plate.
A description of the final operation, i.e. the explosion forming of the metal plate is incorporated into the following description of the apparatus.
The apparatus, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, essentially comprises an evacuation chamber 6 containing the die 5 and comprising means for clamping in place above the die 5 a sheet metal blank 7, means for evacuate chamber 6, an explosive charge 8 to produce the forming shock wave, and a transmitting medium 9 to transmit the shock wave to the blank 7.
The discharge chamber 6 has the form of a coaxial cavity formed in a thick-walled cylinder 10 open at its upper end. An orifice 11 in the side wall of the cylinder is connected by a pipe 12 to a vacuum pump (not shown). The upper end face of the cylinder 10 has a circular groove 13 containing a ring.

to the upper end face 16 of the cylinder by bolts $
17 which pass longitudinally through the ring 15 and are screwed into threaded bores in the cylinder 10, these bolts
17 being distributed over a circle of greater diameter than that of the circular groove 13. The bore of the ring 15 has, at its lower end, the same diameter as the discharge chamber 6, the diameter of the bore increasing towards the upper surface of the ring to form a conical seat 19 for a plug of shock-transmitting material.
The stopper 9 comprises a mass of plastic deformable material, in the alloy of which is housed a rubber disk 18, the lower part of the stopper 9 being shaped so as to fit into the bore of the ring. clamp 15 in contact with a sheet metal blank 7 placed just below the ring 15. A small cylinder 20 is placed or supported on the upper surface of the buccaneer 9, and forms a detonator holder which has a central bore 21 containing, in its lower end, an explosive charge 8, and in its upper end, a detonator 22.
The cylinder 20 can be secured in place by rode-1st clay 24.
In operation, the die 5 is centered on the bottom of the discharge chamber 6 or on a spacer 23 (Fig. 2) or another suitable member placed in the bottom of the chamber so that the upper point of the die 5 comes approximately up to the level of the upper face 16 of the cylinder 10, the upper end of the chamber being closed by a blank 7 placed on the rubber sealing ring 14 and clamped in place by the locking ring. clamping 15. The discharge chamber 6, which comprises the space situated between the blank 7 and the die µ as well as the space situated between the die 5 and the walls of the chamber, is discharged through the orifice 11 which communicates with the space

this ring finger surrounding the ma @ rice 5.
Then, plug 9 and load 8 are placed and the load is turned on. The shock wave produced is transmitted through the plug 9 to the metal blank 7 which is pushed back very quickly on the die 5 to take the required form of dental plaque (as shown in Fig. 4) which then suffices. to crop.
The use of an epoxy retina for the matrix 5 and the layered construction allows the matrix to be made from the dentist's impression 1 without shrinkage. The process consisting of ...
By sealing ring 14 and removing air from the entire space surrounding die 5 and separating die 5 from tlan 7 improves the accuracy of plaque reproduction and prevents weakening of the plaque. matrix by incorporating vents The process of transmitting the shock wave by means of the plastic plug 9 containing a flooded rubber disc 18 contributes to the formate of the plate without risking deterioration by direct action or fragmen- retrieval of the load 8.
If delirious, explosion forming can be replaced by another high energy forming process. For example, one can use a capacitor discharge process such as the hydroelectric spark process.Without this case, as shown in Fig. 5,
the evacuation chamber is immersed in water 27 or in another suitable liquid contained in a tank 23 below two electrodes 29 which can be bridged by an explosion wire 25 also Immersed. The shock wave is in this case produced by an electric discharge between the electrodes 9 or by the bridge wire 25 and is transmitted to the blank by the immersion liquid.
Alternatively, an electromagnetic pulse method can be used, in which a forming coil 26 through which the capacitors are discharged * is pissed into air or other medium above the tight retort blank shown in Fig. .6. A magnetic reaction
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
occurs between the winding and the blank which is thus pushed back into the mold against the die.
