The present invention relates to fibers and foamed and oriented filaments of isotactic polypropylene, as well as to a process for obtaining these products. More particularly, the invention relates to a process for the production of expanded and oriented isotactic polypropylene acts having a diameter of 0.25 to 12.7 mm and having advantageous characteristics such as roundness, reduced variation in diameter, increased yield. in bristles per kilogram, without noticeable loss of rigidity or abrasion resistance *.
It is well known that the properties of polypropylene filaments can be significantly improved by stretching or stretching such filaments in order to increase molecular orientation along the fiber axis. The filaments. The resulting draw-oriented exhibits increased tensile strength, low elongation and stiffness as well as increased resilience *, when extruding polypropylene filament in the sheared state it is necessary to solidify the filaments by cooling before collecting them for their orientation by drawing,
for example by sudden cooling in a non-solvent liquid * filament bond * are then softened by application of heat and stretched in longitudinal direction, in order to orient them, When stretching filament * ramodis by heat in polypropylene , the filaments are often supported by a solid surface after being softened, but before being stretched. This is how we can,

extruded filament.
Further, the deformation is accentuated when the filament, after being softened by heat, is supported by a solid surface before and / or during its drawing. The tension applied to the filament in the course of drawing, while the heat-softened filament is supported by a solid surface, is the cause of this deformation.
The deformation of the cross section of a filament may be such that the length of the major axis of the elliptical section of the deformed filament may be equal to or greater than twice the length of the minor axis of that section. This phenomenon can best be illustrated by reference to the relative dimensions of the cross section of the filament. The relative dimension of the cross section of a filament is the ratio of the length of the major axis to the length of the minor axis.
Thus, when the cross section of the filament is substantially circular, the two axes have substantially the same length and; the relative dimension of the cross section is substantially equal to unity. However, when the length of the major axis is equal to two (the length of the minor axis) the re- lativated dimension is 2.0.
When an unexpanded polypropylene filament is extruded and rapidly cooled, significant variations in diameter occur, as well as irregularities in the shape of the large voids formed in the filament, along it.
Large, low-resistance voids appear to result from rapid thermal contraction and rapid crystallization contraction. Although thermal contraction and crystallization contraction can be

In this furnace, the extruded filaments pass through a series of rollers 20, which can be heated, so as to follow a cloudy or zigzag path, while heated air flows countercurrently, as indicated by the arrows * causing the filaments to pass through the heating zone, the successive rollers 20 over which the filaments 14 pass, being driven at increasingly high peripheral speeds,
lagoon to prevent the filaments from sagging to an appreciable extent. The main purpose of the series of driven rollers 20 is to provide heat exchange between the filaments 14 and the heated air circulating in the furnace, so that the filaments are evenly softened by the heat. Isotaotic polypropylene expanded at a softening temperature of about 127-512 ° C, it is preferable to keep the temperature in the oven at about 149 ° 0.
After leaving the last roller 20 which was the highest, the filaments are collected by a set of three rollers 21, each of the rollers of which is driven at the same peripheral speed or at a peripheral speed greater than that at which is driven the last roller 20; A set of rapidly rotating rollers 23 is provided just outside the furnace 22, these rollers being driven at a peripheral speed of about 6 to 11 times that of the rollers of the assembly 21. Thus, the filaments 14 are stretched. about 6 to 11 times their length * This increases the molecular orientation along the fiber axis.
The drawn and oriented filaments 14 are then collected on a spool 24 supported by a frame 25 ...

The filaments are then passed through a cooling bath maintained at a temperature of about 4 ° C., in order to solidify them. The filaments are then brought into a heating chamber)
in which they are passed on a series of rollers. Hot air is circulated through the heating chamber, so as to heat the filaments to a temperature of about 149 C, before they leave the heating chamber. After leaving this chamber, the filaments are stretched to about 8 times their original length, so as to form filaments with a diameter of 2.0 mm. The cross sections of the expanded and drawn filaments are substantially the same as the cross sections of the filaments after their extrusion, but before they are suddenly cooled and supported by the series of rollers in the heating chamber.

about 0916 sua and about 1297 ca, in partieullwr of 0.76 sam, 6 # q ON and l2p7 mi this diameter being measured t stretching,
are extruded and abruptly cooled in the manner described in the previous examples, using an excess amount of blowing or expanding agent, to obtain

a swelling of 15y. The cooling bath is maintained at a temperature of about 4 * 0. the piles are then introduced into a heating chamber, whereby they are softened by heat and oriented by stretching.
In each expanded pile, the ratio of the major axis to the minor axis before sudden cooling is about 1, just as in the 2.0 mm pile of Example 1. After sudden cooling, softening and stretching, there is a slight

variation in the ratio of cross-sectional distensions, as well as a small variation in diameter. The abrasion resistance of these bristles is good *
