(i) un composé de formule générale R'3 SiX, où chaque R' est un radical alcoxy ou un atome d'hydrogène, X étant un groupe amino, un groupe amino substitué ou un radical monovalent contenant au moins un groupe amino ou un groupe amino substitué fixé à l'atome de silicium par une liaison silicium-carbone ou silicium-azote;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Doxwnopolys114xenea elastomers",

elastomers prepared therefrom.
Room temperature vulcanizing elastomers based on organopolysiloxanes have met with tremendous commercial success and have been employed in a wide variety of applications, particularly as coating, caulking and sealing materials. Previously known room temperature vulcanization elastomeric compositions consist, in general, of an organopolysiloxane containing end reaction groups, a crosslinking agent and a condensation catalyst. These compositions are available as a two pack system and vulcanization begins when the three components are put together.
More recently, it has been found that the organo-

The invention also provides a process for the production of organopolysiloxane elastomers, said process consisting in mixing, in the absence of water, (A) an organopolysiloxane which can be transformed in a solid elastic state and contains terminal hydroxyl groups linked to it. silicon, as well as (B) an organosilicon material which may be:
(i) a compound of the general formula R'3 SiX, where each R 'is an alkoxy radical or a hydrogen atom, X being an amino group, a substituted amino group or a monovalent radical containing at least one amino group or a substituted amino group attached to the silicon atom by a silicon-carbon or silicon-nitrogen bond;
(ii) a compound of the general formula R "n Si Z4-n ', where each R" is an alkoxy radical, a hydrogen atom or a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, Z being a monovalent hydrocarbonoxy radical attached to 1 'silicon atom through a silicon-oxygen-carbon bond and containing at least one amino group or a substituted amino group, n being equal to 0, 1, 2 or 3, without exceeding unity when R "is a radical of monovalent hydrocarbon, or (iii) a partial hydrolysis product of (i) or (ii), containing residual amino groups or substituted amino groups, then exposing the product to water.
The hydroxylated polysiloxanes, forming ingredient (A) of the compositions of the present invention, are substantially linear diorganopolysiloxanes, consisting mainly of RSiO units and where the terminal silicon atoms have directly attached hydroxyl groups.
Small amounts of R SiO3 / 2 units and / or R3SiO1 / 2 units may be present in the polymer, provided
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
that they do not have a resinous character and that the major part of the polysiloxane molecules present are those where there is at least one hydroxyl group attached to each of the terminal silicon atoms. The diorganopolysiloxanes can be average represented by the general formula / RnSiO4-n'where n has a
2 value from about 1.9 to about 2.1, preferably from about 1.99 to 2.0.
They can be homopolymers or copolymers, where the substituents R are chosen from monovalent hydrocarbon radicals, such as, for example, methyl, ethyl, propyl, phenyl and vinyl radicals, as well as the radicals d. 'substituted monovalent hydrocarbons, such as, for example, chlorophenyl, trifluoropropyl and cyanopropyl radicals. For example, diorganopolysiloxanes can consist of dimethyl polysiloxanes, copolymers of phenylmthyl-polysiloxanes with dimethylpolysiloxane, copolymers of methylvinyl-polysiloxane with dimethyl-poly-siloxane, as well as copolymers of trifluoropropylmethyl-

polysiloxane with dimethylpolysiloxane.
The substituted amino silanes employed in the preparation of the vulcanizable compositions are those where there is at least one amino group or a substituted amino group attached to the silicon atom by an Si-n, Si-C or Si-OC bond, the other valences of the silicon atom being satisfied by hydrogen atoms and / or monovalent hydrocarbon radicals or alkoxy radicals. In order to obtain satisfactory vulcanization of the compositions, the silane must contain at least three groups capable of reacting with the vulcanizable organopolysiloxane or be capable of providing these reaction groups in the presence of moisture.
Therefore, suitable amino-organosilicon compounds are those corresponding to the general formula R'3 Si X, where each R 'is an alkoxy radical, preferably a lower alkoxy radical, such as.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
for example a methoxy, ethoxy, or propoxy radical, or even a hydrogen atom, X being an amino group or a monovalent radical containing at least one amino group and attached to the silicon atom by a silicon-carbon or silicon bond -nitrogen.
As appropriate compounds corresponding to this general formula, there may be mentioned, for example, aminopropyl-triethoxy-silane, N-aminoethyl-gamma-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane, as well as (trimethoxysilylamino) -trimethoxysilane, although the compounds of this As they cause organopolysiloxanes to vulcanize, some of them, such as, for example, aminotributoxysilane, appear to be less effective than others from the point of view of their vulcanizing activity. For example, when the aminotributoxy-silane is used alone in the compositions of the present invention, it is necessary to apply heat to the compositions if an extended cure time is not desired.
Among the other suitable class of aminoy compounds belong those of the general formula Rn Si Z4 -n where R "is an alkoxy radical, preferably a lower alkoxy radical, for example a methoxy radical, (onoxy or propoxy, a hydrogen atom or a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, Z being a monovalent hydrocarbonoxy radical attached to the silicon atom by a silicon-oxygen-carbon bond and containing at least one amino group or a substituted amino group, n being 0, 1, 2 or 3, without exceeding unity when R "is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, P @@@@@ group of compounds, there are those such as monoethanolamine orthosilicate [ NH2 (CH2) 2O] 4 Si, tris (aminoethoxy) - vinyl-silane Vi Si (0 CH2CH2NH2) 3 and the compound (C2H5O) 2Si (OCH2CH2) 2NH,
obtained by reacting one mole of diethanolamine with one mole of tetraethoxysilane. These compounds can cause the rapid curing of organopolysiloxane vulca-
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
deniable and in many cases they form strong rubbers in less than 24 hours.
In addition to the amino acids described above, the partial hydrolysis products of the silanes could be employed in the compositions of the present invention, provided that they are present in the residual amino groups or amino groups of the silanes. the hydrolyzate.
The amine component (B) can be employed in the compositions in an amount of from less than 0.1 to more than 50, by weight, calculated on the weight of the vulcanizable organopolysiloxane (A). The actual amount employed depends, to some extent, on the desired cure time and the type of amino component employed. Preferably, component (B) is present in the composition in an amount of from about 0.2 to about 15% by weight, calculated on the weight of (A).
Vulcanization of the compositions takes place when the mixture of the diorganopolysiloxane and the organosilicon amino compound is exposed to water, for example in the form of vapor or liquid. The water vapor present in normal atmospheric air is often sufficient. The compositions are stable in the absence of moisture and can be stored in tightly closed containers. Therefore, this property makes them suitable as one component room temperature vulcanizing compositions. These compo. Sitions can also form the basis of a two-component system.
For example, if it is desired to increase the rate of vulcanization by introducing water into the system, it is advantageously possible to add water, optionally in the form of an emulsion, to the diorganopolysiloxane, then to keep the organopolysiloxane and the organopolysiloxane separately. amino organosilicon compound, juice! until vulcanization takes place.
Therefore, the framework of this
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The invention also includes the combination of this mixture of water and organopolysiloxane, as well as the amino compound, in separate containers.
If it is desired to increase the rate of vulcanization of the compositions, one can add a siloxane curing catalyst, for example tin-dibutyl dilaurate and / or apply heat. However, the use of other vulcanization aids is optional because, for most applications, sufficiently rapid vulcanization can be achieved without having to employ them.
In order to impart specific properties to the vulcanized compositions, they can be modified by incorporating other types of siloxanes and / or fillers. In this case, the compositions of the present invention can be modified by incorporating therein fillers, such as, for example, silicates, surface-treated reinforcing silicas, calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide, oxide. magnesium and zinc oxide. When the compositions are to be used as a one-component system, the fillers or other additives should be substantially dry before being mixed with the other ingredients of the composition.
The compositions can also be modified by incorporating other ingredients usually employed in the combination of silicone elastomers, such as, for example, pigments and oxidation inhibitors.
The compositions of the present invention are particularly suitable for caulking, sealing or coating compounds. They can also be used as adhesives, in the preparation of protective coatings and as electrical insulation.
The following examples, where Vi-vinyl and isoPr-isopropoxyl, illustrate the present invention. r
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
EXAMPLE 1.-
0.4 g of (amino-butoxy) -triisopropoxy-silane of formula NH2C4H8OSi (iso Pr) 3 was intimately mixed with 10 g of a substantially linear dimethyl-polysiloxane, having a viscosity of 4500 cS at 25 C and containing groups Terminal hydroxyls bound to silicon. The mixture was exposed to the atmosphere at room temperature and cured, over 16 hours, to a firm transparent rubber.
A composition analogous to that prepared above was combined with 70 parts of a filler of ground quartz per 100 parts of dimethyl polysiloxane. Into a fully closed 1 1/4 inch (31.75 mm) deep mold was poured a sample of the charged composition, to which was added 0.5 water. The sample was cured, over 24 hours, to a rubbery solid.
EXAMPLE 2. -
0.4 g of aminopropyltriethoxysilane was stirred in 10 g of the linear dimethyl polysiloxane employed in Example 1. The mixture was exposed to atmosphere in a shallow bowl of coated paper and after seven days this mixture was cured to a firm, transparent rubber.
By employing tris- (aminoethoxy) -vinylsilane Vi-Si- (O CH2CH2NH2) 3 instead of the above aminopropyltriethoxysilane, the mixture hardened to a transparent rubber within 24 hours.
EXAMPLE 3.-
In a three-roller rolling mill, 100 g of linear dimethyl polysiloxane used in Complo 1 were combined with 70 g of a ground quartz, to obtain a composition having a viscosity of about 20,000 cS at 25 C.
By mixing 17 g of this mixture, in an open container, with 0.4 g of Vi-Si- (OCH2CH2NH2) 3, the mixture

ge hardened into rubber in 24 hours.
A similar mixture was sealed in thin-walled lead tubes, taking care to avoid moisture. After four weeks the composition still emitted fluid and, after removing it from the tube and exposing it to the atmosphere, it hardened to a firm rubber within two days.
EXAMPLE 4. -
4 g of monoethanolamine orthosilicate [NH2 (CH2) 2O] 4 Si was thoroughly mixed with 100 g of the hydroxylated dimethylpolysiloxane employed in Example 1 and the mixture was exposed to the atmosphere in little cuvettes. deep. After 24 hours the mixture hardened to a firm rubber.
Similar results were obtained by repeating the test, replacing the monoethanolamine orthosilicate with an equal amount of tetra- [dimethylaminoethanol] -orthosilicate Si (0 CH2CH2NMe2) 4 or the compound (Et O) 2 Si '(OCH2CH2) 2NH, obtained by reacting diethanolamino with tetraethoxysilane.
EXAMPLE 5.-
By thoroughly mixing 4 g of the compound (CH3O) 3 Si NH Si (OCH3) 3 with 100 g of the hydroxylated dimethyl polysiloxane employed in Example 1, the mixture hardened to a firm rubber after being exposed to atmosphere for 96 hours.
