<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

'' Improvements to cutting tools * ''
The present invention relates to cutting tools.
The invention is particularly applicable to cutting tools used in horticulture and agriculture, such as pruning tools or secateurs, in particular pruning tools of the scissor type and of the sole type as well as lawn shears. and for hedges. The invention is also applicable to other cutting tools, such as normal scissors and kitchen knives.
In order to reduce the force required for cutting and / or
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
To reduce the tendency for the materials which cut to adhere to the cutting element, the blades of the cutting tools can be provided with an adherent coating of polytetrafluoroethylene or other fluorocarbons or their copolymers, for example. ple a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene (known as FEP).
One method of coating application is to use a suspension of polytetrafluoroethylene in water, which is sold by Imperial Chemical Industries Limited under the name "Fluon G.P.l" ("Fluon" is a registered trademark).
Another method consists in using a suspension of polytrifluoroethylene in water, such as that sold by the company Imperial Chemical Industries under the name of "Hostaflon CD" ("Hostaflon" is a registered trademark). In a slurry application, the water is evaporated either by heating the slide to which the suspension is applied before the coating is applied or by heating the slide after application so as to sinter the particles to. that they form an adherent coating Such heating can be carried out in an inert atmosphere The suspension can be applied by spraying or dipping.
Other methods of coating application are flame spraying, electrostatic deposition or deposition of a sheet film.
The disadvantage of these methods is that it is generally necessary to raise the tool to a high temperature in order to carry out the sintering in order to ensure satisfactory adhesion of the coating.
This may not always be advantageous or even possible and in some cases it is proposed to mix the polytetrafluoroethylene or other coating material with a binder material which sets at a temperature lower than the above sintering temperature. preferably a material that takes hold
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
at normal ambient temperatures. By using such a binder material, satisfactory adhesion can be obtained without sintering.
An example of a suitable material is that sold under the name "Emralon" which is a blend of polytetrafluoroethylene. lene with an epoxy resin. In one form of this material, sold as Emralon 810, the mixture is allowed to set by heating, while the form of this material, sold as Emralon 820, can be dried. in the air.
A particular application of the invention is in the coating of the cutting blade with a new type of sole pruning device, where the cutting blade is replaceable. In such an application, it may be of less importance that the coating may not last very long. Such a coating reduces the "stickiness" resulting from the sap of the element being cut.
