<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Company known as the present invention relates to a seal intended to provide fluid tightness between elements movable relative to each other, and it relates more particularly to seals * ensuring a seal, at extremely high pressures, between cylindrical elements * moving telescopically relative to each other, such as a piston rod and a cylinder head.
The invention finds its most important applications in devices for actuating dampers, liquid springs and equivalent devices where the fluids used operate under extremely high pressures and in a wide range of pressures and pressures. temperatures.
Many different types of gaskets have been developed and used for the purposes defined above, but experts agree.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
to estimate that the joints * known until now leave much to be desired as regards the tightness and the resistance of the joint with regard to the friction and the duration of the service. Until now, such points known for use * in extremely harsh conditions * had a number of drawbacks.
For example. some seals, once adjusted so as to essentially eliminate the leaks! under dynamic operating conditions, friction characteristics so high that they hampered the movements of the element whose sealed operation had to be ensured, Other seals, while exhibiting acceptable friction characteristics *, did not exhibit satisfactory sealing in static or dynamic conditions, or else in both cases * Others initially had acceptable sealing and low friction characteristics,
but their service life was so poor that they could not be tolerated in cases where operational safety was a major imperative,
Accordingly, the object of the present invention is to provide an improved seal of the type defined above allowing fluid tightness to be achieved, at extremely high pressures, between cylindrical members moving telescopically together. compared to the other *

The pressure of the liquid in the cylinder is transmitted through the grooves 64 formed in the opening of the retaining plate 62 to the interior end surface, the cylindrical surface 104 and also, through the O-rings 134 and 136. at the frustoconical surfaces 110 and 116 and the main seal ring 96, the differential pressure thus applied to the seal assembly 94 generates a bore, one component of which tends to move the ring 96 axially outward. direction towards the end part 78 of the rigid ring 68 and this force is transmitted to the wedge-shaped ring 98 and therefore,
Through the annular sealing washer 100, at the inner end surface of the wall portion 78 of the ring 68, a further component of this force tends to circumferentially compress the elements of the ring. sealing 96 and 98 so as to apply them with increasing force against the
<Desc / Clms Page number 19>
outer surface of piston rod 28, with the compressive force increasing dxially in direction of end wall 78 of rigid bguo 68.
The combination of these forces causes the material of the sealing members to flow axially outwardly through the annular gap between the opening 80 of the ring 68 and the outer surface of the piston rod 28.
The components of the above-mentioned forces which are transmitted through the O-rings 134 and 136 to the frustoconical surface 116 tend to apply the lip 122 of the main ring in close contact with the counterbore 74 of the ring 68 and a fluid leak which would tend to occur along this path would on the contrary increase this sealing action.
It has been found that the efficiency and service life of the seal according to the invention is greatly improved by constituting the main seal assembly 94 with three separate annular members OR 96, 98 and 100 profiled / positioned relative to each other. port to others in the manner shown and described above, instead of having a main sealing member consisting of a single element having the same general configuration.
Thus, it has been found that when this one-piece construction is used, the seal tends to leak slightly, especially under conditions of low static pressure, and also that the ring seal material is deformed relatively quickly. we

being forced axially outwardly into the gap between the opening 80 of the rigid ring and the piston rod 28, which caused detrimental deformation and rapid deterioration of the seal. at least two separate annular elements,
such as, for example, by combining the ring 96 and the ring 98 so as to form only a single ring and by adding the annular end washer 100 to them, a seal would be obtained having an efficiency and resistance to pressure. improved wear, However, by separating the main seal there are three separate elements capable of sliding relative to each other, these elements being placed and profiled horn indicated at 96, 98 and 100 in Figure 2, a seal is obtained and further improved wear resistance.
First, by using a separate annular sealing washer 100, flat between the outer end surfaces 112 and 115 of a single ring, or of a ring 96 and a ring 98, and the portion of wall 78 of the ring 68, it turns out that the wear caused by the reciprocating movement of the piston rod 28 is practically limited to the inner edge of the washer 100 which is applied to the surface of the piston rod, and, as this wear increases, the ring is subjected to plastic creep and thins considerably without modifying its internal or external diameter, the plastic fluago characteristics of "Toflon" making it possible to obtain this result. tat.
The washer 100 can therefore maintain contact
