<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

Improvements to a welding device.
The present invention relates to a welding apparatus which is an improvement or a modification of the welding apparatus described in the applicant's French patent no. 1,214,655 filed on January 26, 1959, which is intended to be used for join tubes end to end by welding their ends in contact by means of an electric arc protected by an inert gas and spouting between the interior surface * of the tubes and a non-consumable electrode placed inside the tubes and rotating in them so as to carry out the welding gradually.
In the aforementioned patent, the applicant describes an apparatus for electric arc welding arranged so as to send an inert gas to the vicinity of the end of a non-consumable electrode.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
which is arranged to emerge from an electrode holder and to rotate about 1) the geometric axis thereof, so that the tip of the electrode describes a circular path having that axis as its center, the electrode having in this device in the form of a needle, which is arranged on the axis of the electrode holder and one end of which is laterally spaced from said axis to form the end of the electrode.
The needle is placed in a tube of refractory material constituting a passage for the inert gas, the significant flow of which is used during use for the electrode and the tube.
The latter is pierced with a lateral opening near the tip of the electrode, The body of the welding apparatus preferably comprises a sleeve or pad which) when introduced into a tube, constitutes an electrode holder when using the welding device. The body preferably accommodates a mechanical drive device, such as a worm and associated pinion for rotating the electrode.
In this welding apparatus, the cooling of the electrode and its protective ceramic housing is provided solely by the stream of inert gas used to protect the arc. The welding apparatus has perfectly met the purpose pursued for the manufacture of heat exchange units comprising thick tabular plates or thick collectors (i.e. 25.4 mm or more), which many thin-walled (i.e. 3.17mm or less) tubes with small outside diameters (i.e. 25.4mm or less) and small bores must be attached .
However, there has been a tendency to overheat the electrode and the refractory tube which is necessarily made of a ceramic material to provide the necessary electrical insulation and to resist the heat of the arc to which it is. submitted. These ceramic materials meeting this purpose are readily found, but they tend to be destroyed under the effects of repeated thermal shock.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Another difficulty encountered with a gas cooled welding apparatus results from the shape of the electrode which is largely dictated by the need to provide as wide a passage as possible for the cooling inert gas stream! and protection.
It has been found that it is difficult to manufacture welding apparatus having exactly the same characteristics; because it is necessary to bend the tungsten electrode and grind the tip to give them exactly the Berne contour.
In the modification, in accordance with the present invention, of this welding apparatus, these difficulties are avoided by ensuring that an electrode is held in an electrode holder and that it emerges perpendicular to the geometric axis of a tubular support arranged on the geometric axis of the device frame! and using the tubular support as part of a circuit by which a cooling fluid, particularly water, can be brought into the vicinity of the electrode.
In order to fully understand the present invention, a welding apparatus will be described in detail by way of illustration and not by way of limitation, with reference to the appended drawing, in which:
EMI3.1
fig. 1 is an elevation view, mainly in section, of the welding apparatus; fig. 2 is a cross section taken through 11-II of FIG. 1; fig. 3 is a cross section taken by III-III of FIG. 1.
In the welding apparatus illustrated in the drawing, a short pointed tungsten electrode 10 is held in .., an electrode holder constituted by a short cylindrical block 12 of copper by means of a grub screw 14 so as to s 'extend per-

a tube to be welded.
The tubular support 16 which is a copper tube is surrounded by a protective sheath 18 of ceramic material constituting a tightly fitting sleeve and is mounted in a brass socket or tip 20 from which it extends, this tip having a diameter suitable for the tubes to be welded, and the electrode block 12 being adjusted in the outer end of the copper tube 16. The protective ceramic sheath 18 also encloses the copper block 12, and the electrode 10 emerges a lateral opening 22 made in the ceramic material.
The brass bush 20 is screwed into the front part of a cylindrical casing 26 of a mount of larger diameter @ generally designated 24 in which is mounted a mechanical drive mechanism consisting of a worm screw. housed in a projecting casing 28 illustrated in FIG. 2 and by a worm gear 30 by which the copper tube 16 and the electrode 10 can be rotated by an external drive device, a part of which is indicated at 31, suitable connections being provided for the supply of electric current, for the admission of gaseous argon, and for the admission and discharge of cooling water.
Argon, or other inert gas, is fed through a tube 32 which also contains a fine wire 34 of electric current, and it is sent into the area of the welding electrode 10 in pitch. sant along the outer face of the rotating tubular support 16 and of the electrode holder block 12 in which flats have been formed in order to provide suitable spaces, for example of 0.127 mm, between the outer wall of the tube 16 and the inner surface of its protective sheath 18 of ceramic material. The end of the duct 18 is sealed so that the gaseous argon can exit only through the opening 22 and that it is thus sent into the zone where the arc bursts from the electrode 10.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The inner end of the tubular support 16 supports a brass distributor 36, mounted so as to curve in the housing 26 from which it is isolated by suitable pads 38 and 40 of insulating material, such as "Fluon", a ceramic material or "Spauldite". The bearings 38 and 40 are formed so as to provide an annular inlet space 41 inside the frame 24, and four radial holes 43 drilled in the distributor 36 serving to admit the gas into the space around the tube 16 in the dispenser
A spring loaded copper contact piece 42 bears against the distrubutor 36 and is mounted in the argon lead tube 32 together with the electric current lead 34.
The tube 32 is provided with a fur 44 insulating the electrj quotes.
Immediately behind the electrical contact piece 42, the distributor 36 fits tightly into the bushing 40 and carries two annular seals 46 and 48, disposed respectively on either side of an annular groove 50 which communicates. than with a hole 52 drilled in the bearing 40 and the housing 26.
These seals 46 and 48 serve to prevent water from the rear part of the distributor 36 from entering the front part of the housing 26.
The water distribution arrangements include two annular grooves 54 and 56 machined into the rear portion of the distributor 36. The rear groove 56 communicates through radially drilled holes 58 with a central copper tube 60 which extends through it. an axial bore of the distributor and in the bore of the tubular support 16 up to the vicinity of the electrode holder block 14.
The rear groove 56 also communicates with an external connection 62 mounted in the housing 26, via a radial hole 64 drilled in the pad 40, and serves to admit the cooling water *
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The cooling water, returning along the support tube 16 and the central bore of the distributor 36 into the annular space around the central water inlet tuba 60 .. passes through four radial holes 66 drilled in the rear part of the distributor, in the front annular groove 54 and reaches an external outlet connection 68, via a radial hole 70 drilled in the bearing 40 (FIG. 3).
An annular seal 72 is disposed between the two annular grooves 54 and 56 formed in the rear part of the distributor 36.
Annular groove 50, situated between the two annular seals used to prevent water from entering the front part of the frame 24, serves to collect water which may have leaked beyond the rear seal 48 and gives this effect. gives a visual indication of any defect in this seal. This minimizes the risk of water contaminating the dry gas needed to effectively protect the arc.
Water cooling has the important advantage that the protective ceramic housing of the gas-cooled soldering apparatus is replaced by a ceramic sleeve 18 which is never subjected. at the high temperatures which make ceramic materials brittle and, moreover, this sleeve is firmly supported between the copper support tube 16 and the brass sleeve 20 and is protected from mechanical shocks as well as thermal shocks.
In addition, by replacing the tungsten needle with the short electrode 10, a significant saving in this expensive material is achieved, because the electrode need only be about 6.35 mm long. and that it can be easily removed to rectify it when necessary.
By providing water cooling, it is also possible to use a maximum intensity of the welding current which can be
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
used with special tubes to be welded. For example, welding data for 18/10 mm steel tubes having an outside diameter of 14.68 mm are as follows: welding current t 65 amps; open circuit voltage: 70 volts; closed circuit voltage: 12 volts, argon flow, 2 liters / minute cooling water flow; 1.136 liters / minute.
This improved water-cooled welding apparatus can advantageously be used with the techniques described in the aforementioned French patent no. 1,214,655 and in the applicant's French patent no. 1,223,503 filed on January 26, 1959. Due to the fact that can use a maximum intensity of welding current, it becomes possible to weld sections with thicker walls than those which would have been considered suitable for welding by the techniques described in the aforementioned patents.
