<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Carbon black rubber stabilization process.
To stabilize rubber, for example copolymers of butadiene and styrene, color-modifying stabilizers are added to the latex before the usual coagulation, for example products containing amino groups, or stabilizers which do not modify the color, among which one can mainly cite phenolic or phosphorus compounds. Stabilizers of this kind remain active to different degrees when the synthetic rubbers are mixed with the usual additives such as plasticizers, fillers, etc. Synthetic rubber latexes coagulated in the presence of carbon black and which may additionally contain varying amounts of oil are also supplemented with conventional lanyard stabilizers.
The storage stability of synthetic rubbers which contain carbon black - and possibly varying amounts of oil is ensured by the addi-

The use of color modifying stabilizers, such as phenyl-p-naphthylamine, is not always achieved by the addition of non-color modifying stabilizers. Air, oxygen or ozone cause changes in synthetic rubber, especially at elevated temperatures.
These modifications are manifested for the raw material by increasing values of plasticity, expressed for example by the Mooney index and by the deformation values. The raw material which has undergone unfavorable modifications during storage gives a vulcanized product also exhibiting unfavorable properties with regard to working and vulcanization.
It has been found that the storage stability of synthetic rubbers containing carbon black can be improved by using as stabilizers aromatic disulfides of the formula.

where R can present hydrogen or one or more alkyl or aralkyl radicals. Suitable stabilizers are, for example, dixylyl disulfide and diphenyl disulfide. Such disulfides can be prepared by known methods, for example, by reacting aromatic compounds substituted by aliphatic radicals with sulfur monochloride.
The addition of the disulfide can be carried out in the usual manner, for example, by mixing the emulsified stabilizer into the latex, preferably using 0.1 to 2.0% stabilizer, based on the amount of rubber.

Using the stabilizers listed in the table, carbon black rubber is prepared having the following composition:
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
100 parts of a bute.diene-styrene copolymer polymerized at 5 C
50 parts of carbon black
5 parts emollient oil
1.25 part of stabilizer.
The raw rubber is maintained at 70 ° C. in an oven with air circulation. Samples are taken after fixed times and their Mooney plasticity (MS-4) and strain value (Defo) are measured.
