<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Process for the polymerization and / or copolymerization of compounds containing an ethylenic unsaturation and polymers and / or copolymers thus obtained.
The present invention relates to a process for the polymerization and / or copolymerization of compounds containing ethylenic unsaturation as well as the polymers and / or copolymers obtained by this process, in which use is made of novel catalysts consisting of organic boron derivatives which are capable of allowing the polymerization and / or the copolymerization of said compounds at low temperatures.
Until now, it has been known to use certain organic boron derivatives to carry out these polymerizations and / or copolymerizations at temperatures above 0 C. Thus ASHIKARI (J. Pol. Scien. 1958, 28, April , p. 641) described the polymerization of certain vinyl compounds at 40 ° C. in the presence of dialkyl borinic acids. The use of these catalysts does not
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
However, it does not allow polymerization to cooperate at temperatures below 0 C, a desirable process when it is desired to obtain these polymers with a very regular structure, very crystalline and thermally very stable products.
The Applicant has now discovered that it is possible to carry out such polymerizations and / or copolymerizations at temperatures notably below a0 ° C. when a compound chosen from the group of dialkyl borinic anhydrides is used as a catalyst.
The process, which is the subject of the invention, consists in polymerizing and / or copolymerizing compounds of general formula
EMI2.1
in which R1 and R2 represent hydrogen, saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon radicals or atoms and / or polar groups such as halogens, ester, ether, nitrile or hydrocarbon radicals substituted by halogens, at least one of R1 and R2 being a polar group, in the presence. of a catalyst consisting of an organic boron derivative of for-. mule R2-B-O-BR2 'wherein R' is any hydrocarbon radical.
These catalysts induce very active polymerizations at temperatures between -30 ° C. and 70 ° C. However, it is preferred to carry out the polymerization at extremely low temperatures, below -30 ° C., temperatures at which the dialkyl borinic anhydrides are still active.
Among the compounds capable of being polymerized or co-polymerized in accordance with the process according to the invention, mention should be made, inter alia, of vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, vinyl esters such as vinyl acetate, alkyl acrylates and methacrylates, acrylic nitrile, etc.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The amount of catalyst to be used is of the order of 0.1 to 3% by weight of the amount of the monomer (s) to be polymerized. '
The polymerization or copolymerization can be carried out in bulk, or in the presence of solvents.
Among the catalysts applicable to the process forming the subject of the invention, it should be noted, inter alia, boron anhydrides diethyl, dipropyl, diisopropyl, dibutyl, diisobutyl, ditertiobutyl.
The Applicant has observed that the activity of the catalysts can optionally be increased by adding a small amount of oxygen. The proportion of oxgyene to be introduced into the reaction medium is generally from 0.001 to 0.01% by weight of the monomer (s) to be polymerized.
Among the advantages relating to the use of the catalysts according to the invention, it should be noted: the preparation of polymers with regular structure by low temperature polymerization and the preparation of soluble copolymers by solution polymerization. In addition, at moderate temperatures, these catalysts have surprising activity.
The method according to the invention is illustrated by the following example which in no way limits the scope of the invention because it is susceptible of variants which do not go beyond its scope.
EXAMPLE
In a 2 L glass flask with 3 tubes equipped with a stirrer and a thermometer, the following are introduced successively, away from air and humidity: - 1500 gr of liquid and dry vinyl chloride maintained at a temperature of - 40 C - 1.33 g of dibutyl borinic anhydride - 0.04 g of oxygen.
For four hours the medium is maintained at - 40 C, under a pure and dry nitrogen atmosphere, the total pressure being equal
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
at atmospheric pressure, then the reaction medium is filtered.
11 g of polyvinyl chloride are collected in this way.
When, all other conditions being equal, the dibutylborinic anhydride is replaced by 1.42 g of dibutyl borinic acid, no polyvinyl chloride is collected after four hours.
