Manufacture of polyesters.
The present invention relates to the manufacture of polyesters and more particularly to polymethylenic terephthalates polymers and to the catalyst used in their preparation.
The group of polyesters of the polymethylenic terephthalate type constitutes an interesting source of products capable of forming fibers and films, the best known being tere-

the appropriate glycol. The preferred method involves transesterification between a dialkyl terephthalate, such as terephthalate

The catalyst can influence not only the reaction rates but also the final polyester properties such as 1-1 appearance, thermal stability, softening point, etc. The choice of a catalyst system must therefore be made taking into account several criteria, and the best catalyst is a catalyst which gives good overall results.
Among the substances very commonly added to a polymeric polymethylenic terephthalate is titanium dioxide which is dispersed as a pigment insoluble in the polyester and produces a delustering effect. This introduction of

polyester formation. Belgian patent n [deg.] 508,911 describes a process for forming linear polyesters by polycondensation of diolic esters of aromatic dicarboxylic acids in the presence of oxide of elements belonging to the third and fourth groups of the periodic system. It will easily be understood that this catalytic action accompanied by delustering of the polyester constitutes
an extremely interesting combination of effects. Furthermore, there is no evidence that titanium dioxide, even in large amounts, has a deleterious influence on other properties of the polyester, for example thermal stability.
Titanium dioxide is introduced into polymethylenic terephthalates in the form of a finely divided dispersion in a suitable medium, for example one of the reactants, generally glycol, and it has now been found that the particle size in this dispersion has a considerable influence. on the degree of catalytic activity of = -titanium dioxide in the subsequent polycondensation of the terephthalic glycol ester.

the standard optical density being the optical density of the titanium dioxide suspension, divided by the concentration (in weight percent) of titanium dioxide in the suspension. Measurements can be made at any concentration in the spectrophotometer's true state, but a low concentration, for example 0.001% is desirable.
The titanium dioxide used can be either in its anatase form or in its rutile form and can be added either to the terephthalic ester of glycol, or to the reagents from which it is derived. In the latter case, the delustrant suspension may form part of the glycol charge introduced into the reaction, for example

For preparing polyethylene terephthalate, it is preferred to use the anatase form of titanium dioxide. It is further preferred to use

secondary in low concentrations which, by themselves, would not be sufficient to ensure a reasonable rate of polycondensation.
It has been found that titanium dioxide, specially dispersed according to the present invention, is particularly effective in combination with antimony compounds such as antimony trioxide.
The dispersion of titanium dioxide is very advantageously prepared using glycol as medium by any known process for grinding pigments. A method of grinding this na-

Preparation of finely divided titanium dioxide.
The apparatus used is a cylindrical stainless steel vessel having an inlet opening at the bottom and a 120 mesh outlet screen around the top. The container is equipped with a stirrer consisting of a series of flat discs having a diameter equal to 2/3 to 4/5 that of the container preferably made of
a non-metallic material such as Fluon or Nylon and doors on a central shaft. The operation is extremely efficient when using between 5 and 10 discs, spaced at least 2/3 disc diameter and no more than one disc diameter. The peripheral speed of the agitator is 1500 - 2000 feet (457-610 cm) per minute.
The grinding medium used is formed of beads, preferably having a diameter of 1.0 - 1.4 millimeters, made of any suitable material, such as glass. For grinding a suspension

Manufacture of the Polymer.
1164 parts of dimethyl terephthalate and 930 parts of ethylene glycol are reacted in the presence of 0.82 part of calcium acetate in the temperature range of 155 to 210 [deg.] C, with methanol being continuously distilled off. . Suspensions of titanium dioxide at 50% concentration in ethylene glycol are prepared by grinding in a ball mill for different times to obtain various standard optical densities, these measurements being made after diluting the sample to a concentration of 0.001 % pigment and using a 1 cm cell at a wavelength of 500 millimicrons. Sufficient suspension is then added to the transesterification products to ensure the required concentration of titanium dioxide. The polycondensation is finally carried out at 282 [deg.] C and under a vacuum.

In some cases, antimony trioxide is introduced with the titanium dioxide suspension.

the particle size in the polymer is invariably greater than in the suspension in glycol, since aggregation takes place under the severe thermal conditions of the process.
