"PRODUCTS TO FIGHT UNDESIRABLE PLANT GROWTH".
It is known to use, as herbicides, tetrasubstituted ureas which contain a phenyl radical substituted by an alkoxy group. Tri- or tetrasubstituted ureas which, in addition to a phenyl radical of the aforementioned type, also carry an acyl or alkenyl radical, are also known.
for this purpose. Urea derivatives have also already been used which, in addition to an alkylphenyl radical, are further substituted by two alkyl groups, as well as ureas containing alkenoxyphenyl groups.
However, it has been found that, for the control of an undesirable growth of plants, products containing tri- or tetrasubstituted urea derivatives are particularly effective, in which one of the nitrogen atoms carries, as a substituent, a phenyl radical. and a hydrogen atom or the radical of an aliphatic hydrocarbon having at most 5 carbon atoms, and the other nitrogen atom, an alkyl group and an alkoxy group. These derivatives correspond to the general formulas.

preferably tertiary amines.
The reaction temperatures for process A should not be too high. The starting compounds can also be reacted in the gaseous state. In this case, the reaction product must be cooled immediately so that a diarylurea does not form.
For processes B and C, temperatures below 80 [deg.] C will be chosen. By operating at higher temperatures, the urea which forms can, when working in solution, turn into a symmetrical diarylurea with separation of low boiling amines.
The reactions can be carried out with or without diluents. Among the suitable diluents there may be mentioned, for example, benzene, toluene, dioxane and dimethylformamide.
As starting compounds for process A, there can be used, for example, the isocyanates of phenyl, p- or m-toluyl, o-, m- o p-cyanophenyl, o-, m - or p-

or -nitrotoluyl and o-, m- or p-carbomethoxyphenyl. For processes B and C, the following starting compounds can be used, for example: aniline, mono- or dialkoyl or alkenylanilines, monchloralkylanilines, alkoxy, cyano-, carbalkoxyanilines, nitro- or nitroalkylanilines. Suitable esters of N-alkyl-N-alkoxycarbamic acids are, for example, phenyl, cresyl, methyl, ethyl or cyanomethyl esters.

very good yields. Most occur in the crystalline state. They easily dissolve in organic solvents, for example in alcohols, such as methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, ketones, such as acetone, ethyl.
methyl ketone, or in tetrahydrofuran or dimethyl-
formamide.
The new products exert an excellent effect as selective or full-effect herbicides. Applied in doses of 0.1 to 1 kg of active principle per hectare, the new compounds, for example N-methyl-Np-chlorophenylN'-methyl-N'-methoxyurea, are more effective than the known urea derivatives used for this purpose, in which all the substituents are connected to the two nitrogen atoms through carbon atoms. This better selectivity is manifested in particular for the cultivation of root crops. Thus, in particular, at low concentrations, the effect of the new compounds on weeds is greater than that of known herbicides, such as, for example, N-pchlorophenyl-N'-dimethylurea.
The urea derivatives can be used in dispersion or in solution, or in admixture with fertilizers, where appropriate together with other weedkillers, for example derivatives of chlorophenoxyalkylcarboxylic acids, acids

1 hour, between 25 and 32 [deg.] C. The solvent is separated off under reduced pressure and 24 parts of N'-phenyl-N'-methyl-N'-methoxyurea are obtained as crude product. The pure product melts between
61 and 62 [deg.] C.
The excellent effect of the product thus obtained can be demonstrated by the following test: filling a glass dish with an area of 100 cm2 with earth, and spreading, in the upper layer, 1 to 5 mg of N-phenyl -N'-methyl-N'-methoxyurea corresponding to a dose of 1 to 5 kg / ha. In the soil thus prepared, seeds of Sinapis alba (mustard), Chenopodium album (lamb's quarters), Matricaria chamomilla are sown
