<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Food waste due to chemical decomposition, damage from rough handling, and attack by bacteria and fungi is enormous, especially in fresh fruits and vegetables. In the United States, for example, 20% of the annual crop of these products becomes unfit for consumption for these reasons and, moreover, the quality of much of it deteriorates. For example, leafy vegetables can lose 40-50% of their vitamin C content when exposed to heat for even a short time.
Certain chemicals have already been used to inhibit biological development processes in fruits and vegetables, thus improving shelf life. In this way, for example, the sprouting of potatoes has been counteracted and the sprouting of onions slowed, while such a treatment has also made it possible to keep lemons in storage for a longer time than before. However, as yet no economically attractive and, moreover, toxicologically safe method of this nature existed to prevent the spoilage of plant products such as fresh fruits, vegetables and green ornamental plants. The present invention relates to such a method.
According to the invention, the vegetable products are treated with adenine derivatives, which have the following structural formula:
EMI1.1
Herein, R represents an aryl, aralkyl or heterocyclic group.
The invention is of particular importance for the preservation of vegetables, in particular leafy vegetables, such as lettuce and spinach, green fruits such as beans (whole legumes), peppers and cucumbers, green ornamental plants and green fodder. However, the invention is not necessarily limited to the storage of such vegetable products. For example, it may also be advantageous to spray potatoes with the above-described adenine derivatives before or after peeling. Likewise, apples, peaches, pears, apricots, melons, cherries, peas, beans (shelled seeds), cauliflower, artichokes, string beans, carrots and beets can be sprayed.
Suitable aryl groups which can act as substituents in the adenine derivatives are naphthyl, phenyl, toluyl and anthracyl. Among the aralkyl groups, the benzyl group deserves special mention. Heterocyclic groups should preferably contain an oxygen atom, such as the furfuryl group.
There are three general methods for preparing the N6 -substituted adenines. In the first place it is possible to replace the methylthio group of 6- (methylthio) purine with an amine. Second, one can acylate the adenine and reduce the resulting amide. Third, the chlorine of 6-chloropurine can be replaced by a substituted amino group.
However, the invention is not limited to the use of compounds prepared by these special methods.
Now, for four compounds which have shown particularly favorable results in the treatment of plants, the methods of preparation which have been found to be most suitable will be described.
N6 benzyladenien
10 grams of adenine and 25 grams of benzoic anhydride were heated on a steam bath for two hours and then further heated at 140 DEG C. for four hours.
200 ml of water was added. The mixture was then heated to reflux for one hour and then neutralized with NaHCO3. By filtration
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Afterwards, a crude product was isolated in solid state. From this, 3.5 g of N-benzoyladenine in the form of acicular crystals were recovered by recrystallization from ethyl alcohol. A second amount of 4.5 g was obtained from the mother liquor by further crystallization.
6 g of the obtained N6-bezoyladeine was added to 3 g of LialH4 slurried in 200 ml of tetrahydrofuran. The mixture was stirred for 5 hours, the last 2 hours under reflux. Ethyl acetate was added dropwise until no more reaction occurred and then water was added dropwise until a white precipitate formed. The solid was filtered and washed with boiling tetrahydrofuran. The filtrates were combined and evaporated. Water was added to the residue and the resulting solution was neutralized with acetic acid. A white precipitate formed, which was filtered and dissolved in dilute NaOH solution. The alkaline solution was treated with charcoal and neutralized with acetic acid. In this way 1.8 g of N6-benzyladenine with a melting point of 225-228 C were obtained.
Recrystallization from ethyl alcohol gave a pure product, m.p. 243-244 C

If it is common practice for certain types of vegetables to spray or wash them before packaging, they may be contacted with an adenine derivative at this stage. In principle, however, the vegetable products can be sprayed with the active compounds or brought into contact in some other way at any time between harvesting and consumption, or even already in the field shortly before harvesting.
An aqueous solution of the andenine derivatives can be used, the concentration of which can vary within relatively wide limits. As a rule, 5 parts per million can be regarded as the optimal concentration, but concentrations of no more than 1 part per million can already be very effective. The active compounds can be stored and / or transported in the form of concentrated solutions in an organic solvent, such as alcohol. These solutions must then be diluted on site to the low concentrations which are desired for the treatment of the plants.
In general, at least 0.5 part per million of the active compound based on the weight of the fresh vegetable product is required.
The invention may be illustrated by the following Examples.
EXAMPLE 1 Sarepta mustard plants (Brassica juncea) sprayed with an aqueous solution of 1 part per million N6-1 napftypadenine were placed together with untreated plants in a dark humid room at a temperature of 27 ° C. After three days the leaves of the untreated plants turned completely yellow or pale, but the leaves of the sprayed plants were dark green and fresh looking.
This experiment was repeated with spinach and lettuce, and very favorable results were also obtained. This was also the case when spraying with N6-benzyladenine, N-furfuryladenine and N6-phenyladenine instead of with N6-1-naphthyladenine.
EXAMPLE II. arepta mustard plants (Brassica Juncea) were sprayed with N-1-naphthyladenine, N6-phenyladenine and N-fururryladenine, respectively, in aqueous solutions at concentrations ranging between 1.25 and 5.00 parts per million.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The plants were sprayed 24 hours after they were cut. They were then stored in open plastic bags in a dark room with a temperature of 27 ° C and a humidity of 100%. Three days later the total weight of the leaves and the weight of the rotten and yellowed leaves were determined during sorting. had been set aside. Only 34% of the untreated leaves remained green. All treated plants, even if the concentration had been only 1.25 parts per million, yielded at least twice this percentage of green leaves. When sprayed with N-phenyladenine at a concentration of 2.5 parts per million, it was 83% and when sprayed with N6-phenyladenine IN a concentration of 5.00 parts per million, 87% of the leaves had remained green.
Seven days after the first spraying, the untreated plants had no green leaves left, but the treated plants still had at least some green color left. As a result of the treatment with N-1-naphthyladenine at a concentration of 5 parts per million, more than 30% of the leaves had retained their green color.
EXAMPLE III.
Two days before harvest, Great Lakes lettuce plants were sprayed with an aqueous solution of 5 parts per million of N6-benzyladenine and this was repeated immediately before harvest. The treated lettuce was packed in cardboard boxes and then cooled in a commercial vacuum plant. cartons were stored in a cold room, where they were kept at 4.5 ° C for 13 days and then at 24 ° C for three days. Untreated lettuce, packed, refrigerated and stored in the same manner, was bleached and faded, but the treated lettuce showed a healthy dark green color.
The experiment was repeated only with the difference that the lettuce was stored at 4.5 ° C for three weeks without being previously refrigerated. The final condition of the treated lettuce was much better than that of the untreated. Also lettuce treated with N6-phenyladenine instead of N-benzyladenine had a significantly fresher appearance than untreated lettuce after being stored at 4.5 ° C for three weeks.
EXAMPLE IV.
Lettuce plants of other species, namely "butter lettuce" and "Anstralian lettuce", were treated about 24 hours after harvest with an aqueous solution of N-benzyladenine concentration of 5 parts per million. 100 cc of this solution was used per 4 heads. The lettuce was packed tightly in cartons in conventional manner and stored at 2400.
As a result of the respiratory processes in the leaves, the temperature IN the boxes rose to above 380 ° C. After 2 1/2 days, the untreated heads were pale in color, while the treated heads looked as fresh as before.
EXAMPLE V.
In order to keep the foliage fresh, radish plants were sprayed with an aqueous solution of N6-phenyladenine, at a concentration of 5 parts per million. The plants were then packed in perforated plastic bags and stored in cardboard boxes at 240. After two days, the quality of the treated plants had not deteriorated appreciably, while the foliage of untreated plants, which had been stored in the same way, had turned light yellow.
In a subsequent trial, the plants were stored at 4.5 ° C for six days and then at 24 ° C for one day.
Corresponding tests with N6-benzyladenine as the active substance also gave good results.
