Description (figure 1).

Description (figure 1).
Consider a light source located at 0 in front of the entry slit F 1 '. of a grating spectrograph, the lines of the spectrum focus on the line A B, B C- From A to B we will have for example the wavelengths from 1500 to
2000 Angstroms and from B to C the wavelengths from 2000 to 6000 Angstroms, the above values being exemplary only. We assume here that the lines from A to B are those whose attenuation in air is particularly felt.
The present invention claims the fact of maintaining in an enclosure, at a low pressure, all the part of the optical circuit shown in FIG. 1 with the exception of the part of the spectrum BC which leaves this enclosure at low pressure to be dispersed in another chamber at higher pressure, or at atmospheric pressure.
For the following explanatory text, see figure 2.
The low pressure enclosure is located on a table between level a b, and level a 'b' (side view); it is limited on the plan view by the letters L M N P R S T.
The spectrum spread from the network G crosses between the plane a b and the plane a '% le the space m, n, r, s.
The part of the spectrum passing between m and n is found focused between this same plane ab and a 'b' on line A B. While the part of the spectrum passing between points r, s, (side view) is stopped by a mirror at 45 cd, it is then reflected by this mirror.
From this mirror, this part of the spectrum passes into the second enclosure above the level a 'b' passing through a material transparent for the wavelengths considered. The pressure in this second enclosure is normally at a higher pressure than that of the first enclosure. In the elevational view, the two enclosures can be seen on the focusing surfaces; on a plane a b, the entry slit F 1, the exit slits 01,02, 03 ...
(first low pressure chamber) and on a plane a 'b', the outlet slots
01, 02, 03,04 .... (second chamber at higher pressure or at atmospheric pressure.
Statement of the constituent characters of the patent.
The aim of this invention is to make it possible, with the same dispersive member of a spectrograph, to physically separate the total spectrum into two parts, one passing through, in a chamber, a gas which may be air at a determined pressure, the other, a second chamber, the medium of which is maintained at a lower pressure in order to keep the lines of shorter wavelengths which cross it, an intensity which undergoes only little attenuation.
This separation of the spectrum into two parts has the advantage of reducing to a minimum the dimensions of the low-pressure enclosure reserved for the lines of shorter wavelengths.
